'Spy' Is Melissa McCarthy's Big Break Out

Melissa McCarthy Sandra Bullock Paul Feig Kristen Wiig Jason Statham Dwayne Johnson

Melissa McCarthy's new action-comedy 'Spy' marks a leap in her career from supporting goofball (she was Oscar nominated for 'Bridesmaids') to co-lead (alongside Sandra Bullock in 'The Heat') and now to carrying a major blockbuster on her own shoulders. It's no coincidence that all three of these movies are directed by Paul Feig, a filmmaker who has long thought that more films should be centred on strong, funny women.

McCarthy grew up in Illinois, and describes her family as "a bunch of funny men who think women are really funny. I didn't grow up with a sense that people thought any differently."

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson Is On A Roll With 'San Andreas'

Dwayne Johnson

Dwayne Johnson has already conquered the 2015 box office with 'Furious 7', and now his next huge blockbuster 'San Andreas' is rumbling into cinemas. He also just set a Guinness World Record by taking 105 selfies in three minutes at the film's premiere. Clearly life is good for the 6-foot-4 former wrestler, who at 43 shows no sign of slowing down.

Johnson enjoyed the challenge of making 'San Andreas'. "It's been a long time since there had been an earthquake movie - 1972 was the last Earthquake movie," he says. "There's an expectation, so we want to meet that expectation in terms of heroic characters across the board, all of them having the core of heart. But we also wanted to exceed the expectations too."

San Andreas Review

OK

Set up as an old-style disaster movie with only a fraction of the plot, this earthquake action adventure is preposterous enough to just about work as a guilty pleasure. Everything else about the film is simply absurd, from the fake science to the simplistic family dynamic that strains to hold the story together. But it's definitely a big-screen spectacle, and Dwayne Johnson was made to fill the big screen.

He plays Los Angeles Fire & Rescue chopper pilot Ray, who is going through a divorce from Emma (Carla Gugino) after the death of his young daughter. Now his older daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario) needs help moving up the coast, but Ray has been called to respond to a freak quake in Nevada. So she travels instead to San Francisco with her mother's millionaire boyfriend (Ioan Gruffudd). Then jittery Cal Tech scientist Lawrence (Paul Giamatti) works out that this temblor is heading for L.A. and will move up the coast to San Francisco, perhaps creating the biggest seismic event the world has ever seen. As he issues urgent warnings, Ray rescues Emma from a collapsing L.A. skyscraper, and they both head north to save their daughter. Meanwhile, Blake has teamed up with sexy Brit Ben (Hugo Johnstone-Burt) and his perky little brother Ollie (Art Parkinson) to survive the chaos in San Francisco.

Despite the filmmakers' stated goal to recreate a classic disaster epic like The Poseidon Adventure (1972) or Earthquake (1974), this film doesn't bother to feature an ensemble cast with complex intertwined storylines. Instead, it heaps all of the drama onto Johnson's beefy shoulders. He has more than enough charisma to hold it together, even if his one big emotional scene feels a bit, well, stony. Everyone else provides a masterclass in panic-stricken acting, running and screaming and fearing for everyone's lives even though it's clear from the start that very few characters will die. Hundreds of thousands of anonymous digitally rendered victims perish, but the movie doesn't bat an eyelid about them.

And it hasn't opened yet in major markets like China, Russia or Japan.

The Fast & Furious franchise is going out with a bang. Or, if we’re talking sounds, it’s probably more of a ka-ching.  Since its release on Thursday, Furious 7 has already recorded the highest opening of 2015. On Friday, the flick made a spectacular $67.3 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

According to BOM’s stats, this puts the flick in tenth place for all-time biggest opening, on par with The Hunger Games and The Dark Knight. It's up 74 percent on Fast & Furious 6, which was the previous best debut in the 14-year-old franchise. In a single day, Furious 7 has already earned more than the third instalment in the franchise (The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift) grossed during its entire run.

Furious 7 Review

Very Good

For their seventh adventure, the Fast & Furious cast and crew continue to outdo themselves with mind-boggling stunt driving and outrageous action mayhem, this time infusing everything with emotion as a way of honouring late actor Paul Walker. The rip-roaring pace and more internalised drama combine effectively to create a riotous thrill ride that might actually bring a lump to the throat. Even if it's all utterly preposterous, it's solidly entertaining.

Things pick up right where Part 6 left off, with former black-ops killer Deckerd Shaw (Jason Statham, who else?) determined to avenge his fallen brother. As he tracks them down, Dominic and Brian (Vin Diesel and Paul Walker) have reassembled their team (Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges) to take a job with shady government agent Mr Nobody (Kurt Russell). Their target is the even shadier villain Jakanda (Djimon Hounsou), who has kidnapped a genius hacker (Nathalie Emmanuel) to get his hands on her all-seeing gadget. But Shaw is on their trail as they track Jakanda to the mountains of Azerbaijan, and he interrupts their mission there as well as in the deserts of Abu Dhabi and the streets of downtown Los Angeles.

The double-edged premise offers all kinds of opportunity for plot twists, but of course the main point of these movies is to create increasingly insane set-pieces. This time, the film opens with Brian explaining to his young son that cars can't fly, after which director James Wan proves otherwise, flinging our heroes' hot rods into the sky from airplanes, tower blocks and cliff tops. Amazingly, they seem able to steer even in mid-air! But never mind, it looks so painfully cool that there's little do do but sit back and enjoy the chaos, knowing that even though a flashy vehicle is destroyed every minute, there's a newer, more awesome car coming in the next scene.

Dwayne Johnson Turns SNL On Its Head

Dwayne Johnson Kate McKinnon

Saturday Night Live came back with a bang (you'll see what I mean) last night, with an episode hosted by Dwayne Johnson himself. Clearly, any attempts at subtlety were thrown out the window. Basically, Johnson spent a significant chunk of the show with his face thrust in another man's crotch in a "standing 69."

However, rarely have earthquakes been seen that have reduced whole cites to rubble, caused huge chasms in the Earth and deadly tidal waves through streets killing thousands of people. The only option for residents is to get as far away as possible, though with such a huge disaster ripping through the state, this one is still going to have an effect on the other side of the country. Meanwhile, chopper pilot Ray and his estranged wife are desperate to find their missing daughter Blake first, and use a Fire Department rescue helicopter to search high and low throughout the state.

Paul Walker Vin Diesel Michelle Rodriguez Dwayne Johnson

The first trailer for Furious 7  (aka the seventh Fast & Furious) is out and here’s the good news – it’s faster and furious-er than ever. Also, camels.

Almost a year after Paul Walker's death, the actor received another tribute at the trailer launch.

No, I’m not even kidding. Featuring the ominous line “One last ride.” And Vin Diesel’s epic “I don’t have friends. I have family,” this one might actually be a tear-jerker. In some of the last material he filmed before his shocking death – in a car crash, of all things – last year, Paul Walker returns as Brian O’Connor, partnering with Vin Diesel’s  Dominic “Dom” Torretto for one final heist.

"Hercules" Falters, While "Lucy" Shines At The Box Office With $44 Million

Scarlett Johansson Dwayne Johnson

This week at the box office, the sci-fi thriller Lucy won out over slim competition – Hercules, starring Dwayne Johnson and the holdover hit from last week Dawn of the Planet of the Apes took second and third, respectively. Deservingly or not – the reviewers have questioned everything about Lucy from the plot, to the execution, to most of the action. Even Scarlett Johansson’s acting barely gets a pass, thanks to the godawful material she’s working with, according to The Atlantic. Humans only use 10% of their brain? This Luc Besson sci-fi thriller uses even less. Regardless, whatever limited brain capacity Lucy was working with, propelled it to a $44 million weekend, well beyond critical predictions, which put it somewhere around $40 million.

Scarlett Johansson
Only an intense love for Johansson's screen presence can save viewers from scoffing their way through this one.

Brainy "Lucy" Outsmarts Dwayne Johnson's "Hercules" At The Box Office

Scarlett Johansson Dwayne Johnson

Despite lukewarm reviews, the Scarlet Johansson starrer Lucy has gone on to best Dwayne Johnson’s latest crack at a franchise starter, Hercules. Lucy, a sci-fi flick about a woman with unlimited mental capacities is on track to finish the weekend past its projected $35 million. The movie registered $17,1 million on Friday and has seen Johansson’s star rise even higher. With films like 2013’s Under the Skin and Her, her Avengers role as Black Widow (the character is soon to have her own film) and now Lucy, the savvy actress has flexed both her acting brains and brawn in the sci-fi genre.

Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson is only going up.

Though he definitely has a lot of power in his own way, Dwayne Johnson didn’t have enough strength as Hercules at the box office. The eponymous flick, based on a 2011 graphic novel and directed by Brett Ratner took in a disappointing $11 million on Friday. However, as these types of film often do, Hercules fared much better internationally. It was released in 19 markets this week and still may do better than originally projected. Lucy won’t open internationally until next week.

Two 'Hercules' Movie Releases This Year. One Is Very Good.

Dwayne Johnson

It happens almost every year: two films are released with virtually the same premise. Generally, one of them goes on to box office glory while fans remember the lesser-known film with fondness. This year, we have two incarnations of Hercules battling it out for supremacy.

HerculesDwayne Johnson in 'Hercules'

Kellen Lutz played the demigod in The Legend of Hercules, released in America in January and in Britain in March. Directed by Finnish action maestro Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger), the movie was shot in Bulgaria and earned a paltry $61 million at the global box office (it cost more than $70 million to make). Even worse, the film has a dire 3% positive rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics, and a slightly better 35% of audiences that liked it.

Hercules Review

Very Good

Far more entertaining than it has any right to be, this is a big, messy blockbuster retelling of the Greek myth that thankfully has a sharp sense of humour and some surprising twists up its sleeve. The cast is also packed with veteran performers who know how to make the most of some eyebrow-raising innuendo, generating intrigue while keeping the audience laughing with them rather than at them.

The premise takes a revisionist approach, grounding the legend of the demigod Hercules (Dwayne Johnson) in real stories that have been exaggerated by his nephew Iolaus (Reece Ritchie), who travels with him as a kind of toga-era marketing expert. Their team of mercenaries includes wryly fatalistic seer Amphiaraus (Ian McShane), quick-witted blade-thrower Autolycus (Rufus Sewell), bow-wielding amazon Atalanta (Ingrid Bolso Berdal) and loyal mute warrior Tydeus (Aksel Hennie). When they're offered a fortune by Lord Cotys (John Hurt) to quell a rebellion, they find themselves in the middle of a massive battle that doesn't go the way they expected. And as events take unforeseen turns, Hercules and his gang have to dig deep to turn the tide in their favour.

Johnson is a natural in the role, so massively pumped up that he looks like he could be popped with a pin. His hulking physique and just enough back-story give the character's reputation some weight, both literally and figuratively, so even if he's not half-god his achievements are still pretty impressive. (There are also plenty of hints that he may turn out to be a god after all.) And the surrounding characters add to this with cleverly written roles that are expertly played by British scene-stealers Hurt, McShane, Sewell, Mullan and Fiennes. McShane is so good that he essentially walks off with the whole movie. But relative newcomers Ritchie, Hennie and Berdal more than hold their own.

Dwayne Johnson Battles His Way Through Non-Stop Absurdity In "Hercules"

Dwayne Johnson

It’s Hercules time! So we know that Dwayne Johnson made a lot of money off the mythical epic. And let’s be honest – it’s Dwayne Johnson and Greek myth, we’re definitely going to enjoy this. But is it actually a good movie? That’s the million – or in this case $110 million – question. Sadly, it looks like a firm “no” at this point.

Dwayne Johnson, Hercules
Well, if there's anyone who could pull off Herc, it's this guy.

Critics from the UK, where the film has been out for a week, have already panned it as not worth the ticket. So far it’s been called “an artistically bankrupt misfire” (Digital Spy) and “crude, calorific and full of half-jokes” (The Telegraph).

Robert Downey Jr Is The Biggest Earner In Hollywood, Again

Robert Downey Jr Dwayne Johnson Bradley Cooper Chris Hemsworth

Robert Downey Jr. is the highest paid actor in Hollywood for a second year running, Forbes has announced, putting Iron Man star top of the list with earnings totalling around $75 million. It is his involvement with the Marvel franchise that boosts his position to pole – the movie bagged around $1.2b when it was released last May and comprises the bulk of his counted earnings.

Given Iron Man’s heavy involvement with the Avengers team – the highest grossing single film in the entirety of the company’s output – Downey Jr. presence in the upcoming instalment, Age of Ultron, means he’ll be ‘there or there abouts’ for a few years to come, we’d predict.

Robert Downey Jr Crowned King Of The Box Office

Robert Downey Jr Dwayne Johnson Bradley Cooper Leonardo Dicaprio Chris Hemsworth

With an estimated income of $75 million between June 2013 and June 2014, Downey Jr. shows that he's somewhat similar to his onscreen counterpart, billionaire superhero Tony Stark. 2014 has actually been a fairly quiet year for Downey Jr. considering there is no Marvel blockbuster hitting our screens (featuring him, at any rate) but he still managed to maintain his spot at the top.

‘Fast & Furious 7’ Release Pulled Forward To April 3rd After Paul Walker Death Delay

Paul Walker Vin Diesel Tyrese Gibson Jason Statham Jordana Brewster Michelle Rodriguez Dwayne Johnson Kurt Russell Djimon Hounsou Tony Jaa

The release date of the next Fast & Furious movie has been pulled forward by a week from the 10th April to the 3rd April 2015, Universal Pictures has announced. According to THR, the decision was made to allow the action sequel to have "more international playdates."

The movie was originally scheduled for release this summer but actor Paul Walker's tragic death last November meant the filmmakers had to reconfigure some of the scenes he was scheduled to shoot. Walker died in a high speed Californian car crash along with his friend Roger Rodas and was killed instantly on collision with roadside obstacles.

Walker will still be featured in Fast 7 but some of his scenes will have been edited to account for his unfinished filming. He will be seen starring alongside franchise returners Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson, Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jordana Brewster.

The film is being shot in in Queensland at the moment, but is obviously set in California along the San Andreas Fault – establishing shots will take place in San Francisco.

Does Dwayne Johnson Have The A-List Clout To Carry 'Hercules'?

Dwayne Johnson John Hurt Ian McShane

Despite packing a pretty tremendous supporting cast including Ian McShane, John Hurt and Rufus Sewell, Brett Ratner's 3-D epic Hercules is about only one actor: Dwayne Johnson. The former WWE superstar has proved his clout in the blockbuster box-office game, though Paramount's new big-budget action is almost certainly his biggest test yet.

A second trailer for Hercules rolled out online this week, with the divine hero on the hunt for revenge against the gods who murdered his family. He battles both man and beast, including the multi-headed serpent Hydra and the hellhound Cerberus.

Hercules - Trailer Trailer

Hercules is a bitter and haunted demi-god filled with resentment for the people and the gods (including his father Zeus) who put him through the Twelve Labours; a series of arduous tasks that saw him dance with death on a number of occasions. Now, alone and with no family of any kind to turn to, his only comfort in the world is fighting to the death in battle, alongside a group of other like-minded warriors who similarly have nothing left to live for. However, they face a challenge of a more ominous kind when the King of Thrace enlists them to train up as the most formidable army ever created in a bid to overthrow a powerful general. This is a fight of a different kind for Hercules; he may have more strength than the average man, but just how far will that take him?

Dwayne Johnson stars as Hercules in the latest adaptation of the Greco-Roman myth. Based on the graphic novel 'Hercules: The Thracian Wars' by Steve Moore, the movie has been directed by Brett Ratner ('Rush Hour', 'X-Men: The Last Stand', 'Red Dragon') and written by Ryan Condal ('The Sixth Gun') and Evan Spiliotopoulos ('The Nutty Professor', 'Battle for Terra'). 'Hercules' is scheduled for UK cinematic release on August 8th 2014.

Plot Twist: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson Tops Forbes Highest Grossing Actors List

Dwayne Johnson Robert Downey Jr Steve Carell Sandra Bullock Jennifer Lawrence

Let’s talk about how Dwayne Johnson was named the highest grossing actor of 2013. No seriously, you did not misread that. Thanks to profits from the incredibly successful Fast & Furious 6, The Rock has topped Forbes’ list of biggest earners for this year with his films making $1.3 bn this year. That’s cool, since Johnson seems like a pretty chilled and hardworking guy, etc.

Dwayne Johnson, Superstars for Sandy
That is what you would call a $1.3 billion smile.

But what about Robert Downey Jr. or F&F co-stars like Vin Diesel? Surely the man who starred in the highest grossing film of 2013 (Iron Man 3, in case you’ve spent most of this year in a cave with no wi-fi) must be somewhere around the top? That he is, in fact Downey took second place. This maybe because, while Iron Man 3 was a huge success at the box office, it was the actor’s only film this year, while Johnson starred in four, including blockbuster G.I. Joe: Retaliation and of course Fast & Furious 6.

Paul Walker Dead At 40: Hollywood Remembers The Fallen Star

Paul Walker Vin Diesel Dwayne Johnson Ludacris Tyrese Gibson Aaron Paul Idris Elba Neil Patrick Harris

Following the tragic passing of actor Paul Walker earlier this week, there has been an outpouring of emotion from Hollywood on behalf of the 40-year-old actor. A number of celebrities have taken to their social media accounts to send their condolences to Walker's family and pay tribute to the fallen star.

Paul's death has shocked Hollywood, and the rest of the world

Walker and his friend, Roger Rodas, both died in the fiery crash on Saturday, 30 November, after Rodas lost control of his Porsche Carrera GT and crashed it into a light post and a tree. The car burst into flames upon impact and both Walker and Rodas were pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred as the pair were leaving a fundraising event for Walker's charity Reach Out Worldwide, which was aiming to raise money for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan at the time.

Justin Lin To Follow Up 'Fast & Furious' Success With 'Bourne Legacy' Sequel

Justin Lin Jeremy Renner Vin Diesel Dwayne Johnson Paul Walker Matt Damon

Justin Lin has been signed on to direct the next instalment of the Bourne franchise, which will see Jeremy Renner return as the star of the show. Filming for the fifth Bourne film is due to begin next year, with the movie expected to arrive in cinemas in summer 2015.

Lin, who masterminded the Fast and Furious franchise - which has become one of the most successful film series in history - was announced as the director of the next Bourne film via Deadline, who also revealed that Renner will be returning as Aaron Cross. The 2015 release is being written by Invictus and Sherlock Holmes writer, Anthony Peckham.

The fifth Bourne film will be Lin's first project since stepping down as the head of the Fast and Furious franchise - which grossed over $1 billion from the last three films alone - in place of James Wan. Universal have enlisted the help of Lin to hopefully propel the Bourne series to similar heights enjoyed by F&F.

Pain & Gain Review

Good

Spirited and very funny, this movie should actually be rather disturbing since it's a true story about torture and murder. But director Michael Bay is so slick with the action and comedy elements that he lulls audiences to sleep, entertaining us with events that really should send chills down our spines. So the movie feels rather tasteless when you begin to think about it.

Wahlberg stars as Daniel, an obsessive bodybuilder in 1990s Miami who works as a personal trainer at a local gym. But he's becoming increasingly annoyed by the fact that his clients are much wealthier than he is. So he convinces his steroid-addicted colleague Adrian (Mackie) to help him kidnap a customer (Shalhoub) and steal his fortune. Realising that they need some help, they enlist born-again ex-con Paul (Johnson) in their plan. But none of them is very smart, and the kidnapping goes badly wrong from the start. Still, they manage to steal quite a lot before a tenacious private detective (Harris) notices something isn't right.

For a story that deals with such intensely serious themes, this is an oddly broad comedy. Bay never even tries to find dark irony here; he just focusses on how stupid these criminals are, convinced that they are as cool as the characters from their favourite movies and eerily unbothered by the fact that they are inflicting pain and even death on people for their own greedy ends. The actors inhabit the roles with a disarming naivete, so we can't help but laugh at their idiotic actions. Wahlberg plays Daniel as a muscle-head so focussed on getting what he wants that he doesn't notice the carnage in his wake; Mackie at least gives Adrian a sense of self-doubt, plus some comical romance (with scene-stealer Wilson); and Johnson has a tricky role as a religious guy with a weakness for drugs and women.

Snitch Review

Very Good

Dwayne Johnson tries to flex his acting muscles in this smarter-than-usual action movie, based on a true story that gets under our skin. He's never played someone as fragile as this, which is fascinating even if the film ultimately can't resist cranking up the action while turning rather preachy.

Johnson plays John, a construction company owner whose bright 18-year-old son Jason (Gavron) is caught in a drugs sting by an undercover agent (Pepper). Jason is facing 10 years in prison, and offered a way out if he can finger another drug dealer. But he doesn't know any, since he was set up himself. So John makes a deal with a federal prosecutor (Sarandon) to find a big dealer himself. He convinces reluctant ex-con employee Daniel (Bernthal) to work with him, contacting a local dealer (Williams) before going after the kingpin (Bratt). But of course things get increasingly dangerous the deeper they go.

While Johnson's acting chops aren't terribly subtle, he's such a charismatic screen presence that we are fully engaged with him from the start. The tender scenes between him and Gavron add weight to the whole story, while the tetchy connection between him and Bernthal keeps the film on a knife edge. By contrast, Sarandon and Pepper are pretty much just scene-stealing sharks using innocent people to do their dirty work.

Box Office Biggies: After Earth Flounders, While Fast & Furious Dominates

Will Smith Jaden Smith Dwayne Johnson Vin Diesel

The critics definitely aren’t favoring After Earth this week and for ones, movie-goers seem to agree. M. Night Shyamalan’s crack at sci-fi, starring Will and Jaden Smith is hemorrhaging money at this point, with a measly taking of $10 million on Friday (according to The Chicago Tribune) and looking at an unimpressive $25 million in weekend takings. That’s definitely not enough to justify Sony’s $130 million investment in a project, which, it is becoming increasingly obvious, could turn out to be the year’s biggest flop. Of course, this might not be the final curtain for After Earth, but with earnings at less than half what the studio predicted (After Earth was predicted to debut at somewhere between $30 to $40 million) it isn’t looking good for the lackluster sci-fi adventure.

Meanwhile, the unlikely success of Fast & Furious 6 continues. This weekend the Dwayne Johnson flick isn’t quite putting the pedal to the metal like last week, but it’s still going at a steady $40 million on its second week of release. Then again, Fast & Furious definitely has the formula for a summer blockbuster – namely, cars, quips and scantily-clad people – down pat, while After Earth – a Frankenstein-like mix of sci-fi, drama and comedy – struggles to find its audience.

"Fast & Furious 6," will likely stay at No. 1 in its second weekend with an estimated $50 million over three days. Previous "Fast" movies have dropped sharply in their second weekends, but the strong opening for the sixth installment shows that the series may have hit its peak later on in the game.

What Is It About Fast & Furious Six That Makes Us See It Again And Again?

Dwayne Johnson Vin Diesel Paul Walker Ludacris Tyrese Gibson Jordana Brewster

Throughout the surprisingly long life of Fast & Furious, we’ve come to think of the franchise as something of a joke. Macho men and beautiful women revving up engines and performing absurd stunts, with barely a thread of plot to hold the whole thing together. And yet, not only is Fast & Furious still around, but the sixth installment in the series is geared up to take the weekend box office charts by a landslide. The film grossed over $38 million domestically on Friday and is projected to cash in at $120 million by the end of the holiday weekend (according to USA Today) and it miraculously earned the approval of 75% of critics and 95% of fans on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Pardon us while we stop and wonder: how on earth did this happen?

Well, there’s obviously the very enticing presence of both Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel – both of whom look like your stereotypical tough guys, but turn out to be surprisingly relatable and have really good comedic pacing. Then there are of course the members of the supporting cast – Paul Walker, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson and Jordana Brewster – who’s clever and well-timed quips make this highly watchable. Then there are, of course, the machines, the explosions, your typical action flick fodder, which this franchise takes very seriously. But all that just makes for an entertaining, easily forgettable movie, perhaps one sequel. What Fast did and what’s helped the franchise not only live on, but become bigger and better, with the sixth installment being the best yet, where normally a franchise would be on its last leg, was to stop taking itself seriously. Somewhere around Fast Five the producers realized the ridiculousness of the whole premise and, instead of trying to disguise it, decided to just go for the full monty (we presume that’s how it was mentioned in meetings.)

Fast And Furious 6 Is Released Today, And It Might Be The Best One Yet!

Vin Diesel Paul Walker Dwayne Johnson Ludacris

Fast and Furious 6 gets it's U.S. release today and whilst many are scratching their heads at how the franchise ever managed to get to six films, critics and audiences alike are in agreement with each other that the big wigs behind the franchise have left the best film until last (Though there's probably going to be a seventh).

With original stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker joined by the likes of franchise regulars DWAYNE 'THE ROCK' JOHNSON and Ludacris (as Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges), the latest release is still very much a Fast & Furious film, but don't let that put you off just yet. With all the usual motoring chaos and carnage to expect, only this time round with a little added spice, the film is everything you could from a F&F movie, with added va-va-voom.

'He Needs To Grow Up' - Michael Bay Explains Dwayne Johnson's Absence From Pain And Gain Premiere

Dwayne Johnson Michael Bay

Dwayne Johnson had to miss the premiere of his latest movie Pain & Gain because of a hernia operation, E! News reports. The Rock – as he is otherwise known – was notably absent from the red carpet premiere in LA last night (April 24, 2013) but the movie’s director Michael Bay was on hand to explain why.

“Dwayne's hurt tonight," Bay told E! News "He was pushing it too hard. [ He] needs to grow up and stop wrestling 300-pound men." Tough love from Mr Bay, there. Apparently, the 40 year old actor / wrestler had to undergo an emergency hernia operation last night, taking him out of the celebrations for the movie’s release. He’s said to be resting up at home now. Johnson was hardly backwards in coming forwards when it came to sharing the details of his unfortunate wrestling-related problem, as he tweeted on Sunday (April 21, 2103) “Saw my Dr who had to push my intestines back thru the tear in my abdomen. Kinda romantic. Surgery is next week. ‪#BringItOn‬.” Ugh.

It sounds as though the surgery was a success though, as he tweeted on April 23, “Surgery a success! Dr repaired 3 hernial tears (fun pain). Superman is on the mend.. ‪#WeFallWeRise‬,” accompanied by a photo of himself in a hospital bed, wearing a Superman t-shirt and a hair net. Great sartorial combo, there, Dwayne. Pain & Gain also stars Mark Wahlberg and Anthony Mackie.

Dwayne Johnson's Emergency Operation Didn't Harm The Wrestler's Good Spirits

Dwayne Johnson Michael Bay Mark Wahlberg

Everyone breathe easy, Dwayne Johnson is recovering after his hernia surgery. The wrestling star was rushed to hospital on Monday and had an emergency operation, but The Rock isn’t one to mope at all. He suffered three hernial tears while wrestling John Cena earlier this month. The debate over the “realness” of wrestling is still ongoing, but Johnson is living proof that you can get some pretty real injuries doing it.

Because of the emergency, Mr Johnson had to miss the premiere of his latest flick – the pretty aptly titled, given the circumstances, Pain & Gain. The flick co-stars Mark Wahlberg and opens across theatres this Friday. Director Michael Bay chided the wrestler for risking his health with the sport. But it looks like The Rock’s wellbeing is no longer in danger and neither is his good mood, as he tweeted a picture of himself in the hospital, flexing in his Superman T-shirt, accompanied by the caption: "Surgery a success! Dr repaired 3 hernial tears (fun pain). Superman is on the mend.. #WeFallWeRise."

A bit over-confident perhaps, but that’s the recovery spirit none the less. Johnson’s publicist, Alan Nierob, revealed for The Associated press that The Rock is now anchored at home, recovering. We’re sure that with Johnson’s rock solid good spirit, the recovery will be a breeze.

How John Cena Left Dwayne Johnson Needing Grisly Emergency Surgery

Dwayne Johnson John Cena

Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock was unable to make the Los Angeles premiere of his new movie Pain & Gain on Monday, after receiving an emergency operation for three hernial tears. The actor and wrestler is doing fine now after a successful operation, though it's unlikely he will return to the promotional rounds for Michael Bay's movie, also starring Mark Wahlberg.

"Surgery a success! Dr repaired 3 hernial tears (fun pain). Superman is on the mend.. #WeFallWeRise," Johnso tweeted on Tuesday with a photo of himself in a hospital bed, flexing in a Superman T-shirt. His publicist Alan Nierob told the Associated Press that he is now recovering at home.

The injury occurred when Johnson wrestled John Cena at Wrestlemania 29 on April 7, losing his championship title. "In the middle of last night's Wrestlemania match I tore my abdomen & abductor muscles off the bone. Just part of the job," he wrote April 8, adding, "But as we know... It's all about #JustBringIt. WWE Universe, THANK YOU for all the love & well wishes. Means everything to me. #LeaveItAllInTheRing."

Dwayne Johnson Misses 'Pain And Gain' Premiere After Emergency Operation

Dwayne Johnson

The reasons Dwayne Johnson missed the Pain & Gain premiere has been revealed by Michael Bay, who told the crowds in Los Angeles that the wrestler-turned-actor had to go have emergency surgery, after suffering an injury wrestling as The Rock at this year’s Wrestlemania in New Jersey.

"Dwayne's hurt tonight," Bay told E! Online on the red carpet. "He was pushing it too hard. [ He] needs to grow up and stop wrestling 300-pound men." The 40 year-old wrestled in the former World Wrestling Federation (now World Wrestling Entertainment) between 1996 and 2004 before leaving the business to concentrate fully on his movie career. However he has been back with the WWE part-time since 2011 and most recently fought John Cena at Wrestlemania 29 – a match he lost. The subsequent injury meant he had to duck out of the company’s Raw program the night after, and the severity of the situation became clear as he also missed the Pain & Gain premiere.

"Saw my Dr who had to push my intestines back thru the tear in my abdomen. Kinda romantic," Johnson had tweeted recently. "Surgery is next week. #BringItOn." However he ended up needing the operation to take place somewhat sooner. Given that Pain & Gain focuses on a group of bodybuilders, the star’s been really pushing at the gym of late, perhaps this is his body’s way of telling him to slow down.

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson Channeled His Inner Superman After Hernia Operation

Dwayne Johnson Michael Bay

After coming out of emergency hernia surgery, actor/wrestling star Dwayne Johnson remained rock solid.

Johnson posted a twitpic of himself in a Superman T-shirt in his hospital bed, accompanied by the following caption: "Surgery a success! Dr repaired 3 hernial tears (fun pain). Superman is on the mend.. #WeFallWeRise."

According to E!News, a rep for The Rock stated that the star is now back home and recovering from the operation on Monday night. Yet more proof that you can’t keep the man down for long. The only consequence was that Johnson reportedly missed the Los Angeles premiere of his new film, Pain & Gain. There’s an appropriate title, if we ever did see one. On the premiere’s red carpet director Michael Bay commented that it may be Johnson’s wrestling exploits that are endangering his health. "He was pushing it too hard," Bay told E! News. "[He] needs to grow up and stop wrestling 300-pound men.”
