E. L. James Says Fifty Shades Darker Is A Fairytale

E.L. James

Step aside Disney, there's another live action fairytale hitting screens this week in the form of erotic thriller 'Fifty Shades Darker'. Of course, it's certainly not a suitable bedtime story (for children anyway), but the romantic journey of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele is rooted in traditional love stories.

Asked at the premiere if she thought the film was a modern-day 'Cinderella' story, the author of the book trilogy E. L. James admitted it was. 'Completely', she said. 'For me it was one with 'Beauty and the Beast'. That was the thought in my head as it was unrolling. There is a 'Cinderella' element to it. It is a fairytale. A complete fairytale.'

Yesterday Fifty Shades of Grey author E.L. James took part in a Twitter Q&A session that managed to go downhill so fast, it made Robin Thicke’s experience last year look like a total love-in. Sitting in Twitter’s UK headquarters, the author invited fans (and everyone else) to ask her anything, using the hashtag AskELJames.

But the Q &A session quickly descended in to chaos as the hashtag was taken over by users who weren’t exactly interested in asking the author about her creative process. Some took the chance to call out the author on her writing skills, with one user tweeting, ‘No question: Just, as a fellow author, thank you for proving to me that you can get anything published, no matter how awful.’

New 'Fifty Shades' Book Sells Over A Million In One Weekend

E.L. James

In news that will surprise precisely nobody, the new ‘Fifty Shades’ spin-off novel has been a stunning sales success. In the first four days since it was released on Thursday June 18th, ‘Grey: Fifty Shades of Grey as Told by Christian’ has sold 1.1 million copies.

It’s particularly impressive since its author, E.L. James, only announced the existence of the book barely a fortnight before its release date. Even other hugely anticipated novels, like the sequel to Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’, have been given promotional periods over several months.

Fifty Shades of Grey cast member Victor Rasuk thinks it will “suck” that Sam Taylor-Johnson is not staying on to direct the sequels, but is nevertheless “excited” that somebody new is coming to take over behind the camera.

In the run-up to its release, a number of stories emerged from the set of disagreements between Taylor-Johnson and the book’s author E.L. James over the direction of the movie, and it was reported soon afterwards she would not return to direct the follow-ups despite the lucrative gains to be had.

British Schoolboy Punished For Dressing As Christian Grey For World Book Day

An 11 year old boy who dressed as a character from ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ was banned from his school’s World Book Day celebrations, according to a report by the BBC.

Schoolboy Liam Scholes turned up to Sale High School dressed as Christian Grey from the erotic novel, donning a grey suit, an eye mask and a length of thin rope. Amid the myriad Harry Potters and Hobbits, the costume was meant to be tongue-in-cheek, but the school deemed the outfit to be offensive and said that Liam could not take part in the official photographs.

Erotic blockbuster Fifty Shades of Grey held on to its spot at the top of the box office, despite seeing a massive drop in ticket sales. Receipts of $23.3 million were reported by the L.A. Times, down a whopping 73% from its first weekend.

A decline was of course expected, but the figure is at least 30% less than most projections for its second weekend. When it opened in time for the extended Valentine’s Day and Presidents Day weekend last Friday (February 13th), it took a mammoth $94.4 million.
