Biography

Eddie Izzard (born 7.2.1962) Eddie Izzard is a British comedian and actor. He is known for his transvestism and he often dresses in women's clothes and wears make-up for his stand-up shows.

Childhood: Eddie Izzard was born in Yemen, to Dorothy and Harold Izzard. His mother was a nurse and his father an accountant. At the time of Eddie's birth, his father was working for BP.

The Izzard family then moved to Bangor in Northern Ireland. When Eddie was six, his mother died of cancer. Eddie's brother Mark was eight at the time.

Eddie Izzard was educated at St. Bede's Preparatory School and Eastbourne College. He then attended Sheffield University, where he began performing as a stand-up comic. When he was ejected from his accountancy degree, he began working on his stand-up routines in earnest, as a means of earning a living.

Career: Eddie Izzard began his career as a street performer in the US and Europe. He later returned to the UK and began performing in venues such as The Comedy Store where his popularity grew throughout the 1980s and 1990s. His rambling, stream-of-consciousness style has often been compared to the Monty Python comedians. He is also known for his impressions, often using the voice of James Mason to portray God as an inadequate figure of authority, or the use of Sean Connery's voice to portray the Biblical figure of Noah.

In 1993, Izzard won a British Comedy Award for his Live at the Ambassadors show. The next year, he performed as part of 'Filth', which was a fundraiser for the Terence Higgins Trust, involving a group of left-wing comedians.

In 1996, Izzard won another British Comedy Award for his Definite Article show, which he toured around the UK and overseas. The following year, he produced a surreal sitcom for Channel 4 entitled Cows. The show was a live-action sitcom, with actors dressed up in cow suits.

Despite a successful run in New York with Definite Article, it was not until his Dress To Kill show came about that Eddie Izzard really became a success in the United States. The Dress To Kill show was shown n the popular HBO channel and the increase in his public stature and popularity earned him two Emmy Awards in 2000.

Shortly after Dress To Kill was aired, Izzard also played a supporting role in Mystery Men, a comic book adaptation starring Ben Stiller and William H. Macy.

Eddie Izzard was chosen, in 2005, to provide the voiceover for the UK government's recycling campaign. The following year, the US TV network FX commissioned a drama series entitled The Riches, which was co-written by Eddie Izzard. Izzard starred in the drama alongside Minnie Driver.

During the Edinburgh leg of the Live 8 concerts, Eddie Izzard performed onstage with Midge Ure of Ultravox, playing the piano part for 'Vienna'.

Izzard used parts of his Stripped tour in 2008 to mock the self-referential style of Wikipedia and often read articles from the site out loud on his iPhone during the show.

Eddie Izzard has also performed in a number of theatrical plays, including David Mamet's The Cryptogram (alongside Lyndsay Duncan), Christopher Marlowe's Edward II (in which he played the title role), Julian Barry's Lenny Bruce biopic, Lenny (again taking the title role) and also replacing Clive Owen in A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, alongside Victoria Hamilton.

Izzard starred in Valkyrie in 2008. He played the role of General Erich Fellgiebel, opposite Tom Cruise's Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg. The film was based on the plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler during World War II.

In 2009, Eddie Izzard embarked upon a month-long fundraiser for the Sport Relief charity, in which he ran 30 marathons in 30 days.

Victoria & Abdul Review

Good

Essentially a sequel to the 1997 hit Mrs Brown, this film returns Judi Dench to play Queen Victoria in another relationship that shook up the royal household. It's such a perfect role for Dench that it's impossible to imagine anyone else playing her, and this film traces Victoria's final 15 years with plenty of lively humour and some pointed drama. The story is a bit thin, and some elements are difficult to believe, but it's thoroughly engaging.

The story opens in 1887, as Abdul (Ali Fazal) is selected to travel from India to London with Mohammed (Adeel Akhtar) to present Queen Victoria (Dench) with special honour. In London, Abdul and Mohammed are called "the Hindus" even though they're Muslims, and told to stay out of sight with the servants. But Abdul catches the Queen's eye, and she brings him into her household as a personal tutor in Urdu and Islam. Her staff (headed by Tim Pigott-Smith) doesn't like this at all, and conspires with both the heir to the throne (Eddie Izzard) and the prime minister (Michael Gambon) to undermine Abdul's influence. But Victoria isn't having any of it, demanding that they respect him.

This is a story that was hidden for more than a century, because after Victoria's death all references to Abdul were erased from the official history. It was only the discovery of Abdul's journals that revealed the truth, and screenwriter Lee Hall (Billy Elliot) has clearly taken some artistic licence as he crafted the facts into an entertaining narrative that's packed with hilarious touches. Meanwhile, Stephen Frears (The Queen) directs in jaunty Downton Abbey style, never quite taking anything seriously.

Victoria And Abdul Trailer

Queen Victoria was one of the United Kingdom's most loved monarchs. She ruled over her country with dignity and grace though she wasn't a lady to be toyed with. After the death of her beloved husband, Albert, the queen found herself mourning her loss for the rest of her life - famously she wore black for her remaining years. She took solace in her children and continued to be a fine ruler of the country.

After the loss of Albert, few people penetrated the queen's frosty persona, most famously she developed a great friendship with a Scottish servant called John Brown and they remained good friends - some even say lovers - until his death. Once again alone, the queen was only to develop one other significant friendship outside of her close circle.

As the queen was celebrating her Golden Jubilee, she found herself surrounded by kings and queens from around the world but the one person that she genuinely struck up a friendship with was a Muslim waiter called Abul. Though it was entirely frowned upon for the royals to associate with lowly servants, Victoria was never one to follow those rules.

Rock Dog Trailer

Bodi is a Tibetan Mastiff who's tired of his life on Snow Mountain where his job is to guard sheep from a prowling wolf named Linnux and his friends. It may sound scary work, but little is more scary than Bodi's authoritarian father Khampa who is literally top dog and has a strict rule against anything that may be distracting to the work - including music. However, one day while Bodi is out manning the fort, he discovers a radio that has fallen from a aircraft. Curiosity gets the better of him and he checks it out, and it only takes a few seconds of rock music for him to realise that it's his dream to become a rock 'n' roll star. He decides to leave his home and venture to the city where he teams up with a legendary musician named Angus Scattergood who wants him to help him write a new song. Unfortunately, Linnux is still on the prowl and Bodi finds himself having to choose between his family and his passion.

The Lego Batman Movie Review

Good

A spin-off from 2014's awesome The Lego Movie, this raucously paced action-comedy is proof that nonstop hilarity isn't enough. Genre fans will adore the relentless barrage of silliness, as wordplay, sight-gags, film references and elaborate jokes pile on top of each other. But it's all rather exhausting, because the story is simply too slippery for the audience to hold onto.

When we catch up with Batman (again voiced by Will Arnett), he's revelling in his lonely life surrounded by his huge collection of gadgets in the cave under Wayne Manor, where his only companion is his sardonic butler Alfred (Ralph Fiennes). But an encounter with the Joker (Zach Galifianakis) gets him thinking about his solitude, and new commissioner Barbara Gordon (Rosario Dawson) wants to work with him rather than let him do everything on his own. Then he inadvertently adopts the orphan Dick (Michael Cera), just as the Joker puts into motion a nefarious plan to unleash an army of bad guys on Gotham City.

The film pings from one crazed action set-piece to the next, packing comical touches into every image and each line of dialogue. The audience has little choice but to hold on for the ride, and since it's impossible to see every gag that flies at us, this is clearly a movie that requires multiple viewings. The problem is that the story and characters aren't very inviting. Arnett's gruff whisper is genuinely hilarious, especially in his postmodern flights of fancy, but Batman is a preening idiot, really. Dawson, Cera, Fiennes and Galifianakis are more likeable, but are sidelined in the story. And the sprawling, mega-starry supporting cast offers a continual stream of solid laughs. But it's all so frantic that the sentimental themes in the story never get a chance to resonate before the script makes fun of them.

Absolutely Anything Review

Terrible

Simon Pegg continues his rollercoaster career, alternating between superior blockbuster franchises (Mission: Impossible and Star Trek) and awkward British romantic-comedies (Hector and the Search for Happiness). And this might just be his most disastrous move yet. Despite a promising cast, which includes a reunion of the surviving Monty Python members, this madcap sci-fi comedy never finds its tone, veering wildly from nutty slapstick to sentimental silliness. It's hard to remember laughing even once while watching it.

The story kicks off when an American space probe launched in 1972 is intercepted by the Intergalactic Council (voiced by the Pythons). Their investigation into Earth consists of watching YouTube videos, so of course they decide to destroy the planet. But first, they'll give one earthling a chance to save the world: they randomly choose North London schoolteacher Neil (Simon Pegg) and give him superpowers that allow him to do absolutely anything. After a few mishaps, he tries to use his abilities to improve his life, making his his dog Dennis speak (in the voice of Robin Williams) and appearing irresistible to his neighbour Catherine (Kate Beckinsale). Even though she already likes him. But Neil only has 10 days to do the right thing with his powers, or Earth is doomed.

Yes, this is essentially the same plot as Bruce Almighty, but the film never quite settles on an approach. It's produced in the style of an over-wacky child's movie, but the humour is eerily adult-oriented, so it's difficult to see who would enjoy it. The main plot is never remotely coherent, meandering through the story without any sense of direction. There are also a few corny sideroads to pad out the slim running time, including Neil's work colleague (Sanjeev Baskar) becoming an object of religious devotion, while Catherine's American military one-night-stand (Rob Riggle) becomes an obsessive stalker. Neither of these strands goes anywhere funny. Nor do extended cameos by Eddie Izzard (as a gruff headmaster) or Joanna Lumley (as a snooty TV presenter).

If you could change absolutely anything in the world, what would it be? This is the ultimate question that Neil Clarke finds himself faced with when he wakes up with the ability to become whoever he wants to be, have whatever he wants and make the impossible very easily possible. Little does he know that this is a test set up by some disgruntled extra-terrestrial lifeforms, who have given the following ultimatum: use this ultimate power for good, or watch the Earth burn. Unfortunately, Neil has a lot of things in his own life that he would like to change, let alone important things in the rest of the world. He wishes for an easier life, to be more attractive and to win the heart of his neighbour Catherine. But, as Spider-Man once said, with great power comes great responsibility, so if he is thinking of making some big changes, he ought to make sure he's really thought them through first.

Bloc Party Kraftwerk Foals Eddie Izzard Jessie Ware Sean Lock

Within it's scenic woodland surroundings, Henham Park in Southwold, Suffolk, was once again the place to be this past weekend (19 - 21 July) as the worlds of music, arts, comedy, cabaret and more all mixed seamlessly together for a weekend to remember.

Bloc Party
Bloc Party rounded off the first day

Although it was Bloc Party who headlined the main-stage on the first night (Friday 19 July), revellers didn't have to wait around to get their first taste of the wonders of festival-life. With the Maccabees, Yo La Tengo and The Leisure Society coming before them, one of the most warmly received acts came from one of the smaller stages, the BBC Radio 6 stage. Texas were the headliners of the night and despite their more radio-friendly sound ging against the alternative grain most of the festival takes, their renditions of 'I Don’t Want a Lover,' 'Summer Son' and a host of new tracks had the audience eating out of singer Sharleen Spiteri's hands. Meanwhile Japandroids and DIIV were among the bigger names on the smaller stages, whilst Lee Nelson and Sean Lock were among those bringing the laughs to the Comedy Stage.
