Ahead of its cinematic release in just over a week’s time, Eddie Redmayne has been talking about the stresses he’s faced while making his new film Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.

The 34 year old English actor, who won an Oscar for his role as Professor Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything last year, was speaking to The Guardian in an interview published this week, and was asked whether he felt the weight of expectation.

“Do you feel pressure? Of course you feel pressure,” Redmayne replied. “Also, particularly because I loved the Potter films. There was something so warming about being able to dive back into that world every year or two. And if you’ve enjoyed something, you don’t want to be the one who comes in and screws it up.

“But pressure’s there with every film,” he continues. “With The Theory of Everything it was knowing Stephen and Jane and the family would see the film. With The Danish Girl it was all the people that I’d met in preparation for the film who came from the trans community. It’s pressure here of a different type, which is called hardcore fandom.”

In a separate interview with Time Out London, he also admitted that he was so concentrated on getting his performance correct that he’d be rehearsing out loud while travelling on the London Underground.

“I’d be on the tube, imagining talking to this thing, and suddenly realise I’m being stared at,” he recalled. Asked about whether he felt more conspicuous because of his fame, he said: “There’s the odd surreptitious one, which is funny because you have this incredibly embarrassing thing: the flash goes off, you look up and they look, and then you have this awkward 40 seconds to the next stop.”

Redmayne’s next scheduled project is in a voice-over role for Nick Park’s upcoming animated movie Early Man, which is due for release in 2018. Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them is out on November 18th.
