Pretty much everyone has seen the Ellen Degeneres Oscars selfie by now; the celeb-packed pic that sent the Twittersphere into melt-down and quickly became the most retweeted image of all time. The Oscars host somehow gathered the cream of the awards' red carpet for last night's impromptu snap, which has become the evening's most shared and talked about image.

The glory of the Oscars selfie lies in the pure and unabashed joy seen on every one of its twelve featured Hollywood stars' faces. Gone are the pouts, poses and glowers of the red carpet pap-snap and instead we have a bunch of gorgeous and joyous actors ready to party at the year's biggest movie awards.

From left to right clockwise: Jared Leto, Jennifer Lawrence, Channing Tatum, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong'o, Angelina Jolie, Peter Nyong'o, Bradley Cooper, Ellen DeGeneres and Meryl Streep all managed to squeeze into the team photo with Leto's face suffereing an unfortunate chop-off. "If only Bradley's arm was longer. Best photo ever. #oscars" tweeted the ecstatic host as she posted the photo.

The image began to pick up speed as it was shared around the world and within half an hour had broken the Twitter most retweeted record set by the famous Barack and Michelle Obama "Four more years" shot. After 80,000 retweets were attracted in three minutes, the photo steam-rollered on to over half a million in half an hour and 1.2 million within the hour.

Laura Olin, who was part of the Obama social media team that sent the previous 780,000 record tweet, posted "We had a good run, little tweet. We had a good run," after their record was overtaken.

With over a billion Oscars viewers worldwide, DeGeneres' tweet became so popular that it caused Twitter to malfunction, throwing up error messages for lots of users. "We crashed Twitter," Ellen said later on in the ceremony.

There has been plenty of debate over which star pulled the best pose, with many rooting for Kevin Spacey as the victor. The House of Cards star stands out in the sea of gleeful faces by pulling a slightly shocked and bemused expression with his mouth hilariously agape.
