Emily Blunt Loved Playing Drunk For The Girl On The Train

Emily Blunt

For her role in the film adaptation of the bestseller The Girl on the Train, Emily Blunt was excited to get her head around a character unlike anyone she's ever played. "Rachel is very toxic, physically and emotionally," she says of her character. "She's an incredibly tortured, self-loathing sort of person, and I thought it was thrilling to have a protagonist that's a blackout drunk! So it was a combination of the personal challenge for me."

After playing a series of more heroic characters in films like Into the Woods, Edge of Tomorrow and Sicario, it was fun to play someone who was so unreliable. "Even if I don't agree with the things that she does, I have to understand her and empathise with the fact that she's taken life's setbacks harder than most people," Blunt explains.

Emily Blunt On Gender Double-Standards In Hollywood

Emily Blunt

Ahead of the release of her new movie The Girl On the Train, adapted from Paula Hawkins’ massive-selling blockbuster novel, Emily Blunt has discussed the double standards she believes exist in Hollywood when it comes to how men and woman are portrayed.

“With so many movies, women are held to what a man considers a feminine ideal,” says Blunt to The Hollywood Reporter. “You have to be pretty. You have to be 'likable,' which is my least favourite word in the industry. Rachel isn't 'likeable.' What does that mean? To be witty and pretty and hold it together and be there for the guy? And he can just be a total drip?”

The Fault In Our Stars seems to be emerging as the winner of this weekend’s box office race, after it made teens across the US (and the world) bawl their eyes out for three solid days. That’s what the tweets say, anyway. The film tells the story of a pair of teens living with cancer – the clever and self-deprecating Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley) and the disarmingly lovable Augustus Waters (Ansel Elgort). As the two meet, fall in love and go on a life-changing trip together, they discover some truths about life, love and the meaning of it all.. As for the box office stats, well, those are nothing to cry about.

In "Edge Of Tomorrow" Tom Cruise Is The Action Hero Of The Future - Review Roundup

Tom Cruise Emily Blunt

Tom Cruise is forced to live out the same day on loop in the Edge of Tomorrow – a concept that would have been as unimaginative as the name, if it wasn’t for the sci-fi twist the movie offers. Cruise and Emily Blunt team up in a film that is so far getting high marks from the critics and is about to go into its debut weekend with a predicted $28 million debut (according to boxoffice.com). The analysts place it lower in the chart predictions than the other debut this weekend – the highly anticipated screen adaptation of John Green’s The Fault In Our Stars, which is on track for a $36 million weekend. Still, Edge of Tomorrow is definitely on the radar, with some strong reviews.

Emily Blunt, Tom Cruise
Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise sell the premise for all it's worth.

“It's not the most original setup, to be sure, but what makes this particular celluloid Möbius strip bend in on itself with such seamlessness is the cheeky airtight logic of Christopher McQuarrie, Jez Butterworth, and John-Henry Butterworth's script — and the stars,” writes Chris Nashawaty of Entertainment Weekly. “While Cruise sells the déjà vu contraption with his usual single-minded determination, it's Blunt who emerges as the who-knew wild card.”

'Edge Of Tomorrow': Emily Blunt Said She Never Wanted To Work With Tom Cruise

Emily Blunt Tom Cruise

Edge Of Tomorrow Review

Very Good

A smarter-than-expected script turns this noisy sci-fi action movie into something remarkably entertaining. A-list stars, solid actors and whizzy effects aside, the dialogue is packed with clever observations that are both mind-bending and unexpectedly hilarious. And director Doug Liman (Mr. & Mrs. Smith) lets his cast have a lot of fun with it.

In the near future when aliens called Mimics have rampaged across Europe, Cage (Tom Cruise) is a military media spokesman suddenly sent into the front-lines from London, battling the fearsome creatures on the beaches of Normandy. He's killed fairly quickly, but wakes up that same morning and is again sent through battlefield prep with harsh Sgt Farell (Bill Paxton) and a rag-tag team. Again and again. Eventually he breaks out of the pattern and discovers another soldier, Rita (Emily Blunt), who seems to understand why he is living this day over and over only to die each time. So he uses the repetition to figure out what's really going on, and he and Rita plot a way to stop the aliens for good.

Yes, the premise is a direct riff on Groundhog Day, as Cage makes the most of each day, learning something new that will get him further the next. And the film's script knowingly plays with the set-up, offering witty comments and some genuinely suspenseful set-pieces along the way, all sharply edited into a relatively coherent narrative, although the ending will generate a lot of post-screening debate. Liman packs the film with kinetic, intense action sequences that are rendered with strikingly realistic effects that occasionally have some extra fun with the 3D.

'Edge Of Tomorrow': Is Tom Cruise Still The World's Biggest Movie Star? [Poll]

Tom Cruise Emily Blunt

There was a five year period in the early 2000's when Tom Cruise could do no wrong and was undoubtedly the world's biggest movie star. He put together a fine run of quality movies, including Minority Report, Space Station, The Last Samurai, Collateral, War of the Worlds and Mission: Impossible III.

After that, things started to go a little...wrong. The disastrous Lions for Lambs was arguably the worst movie of Cruise's career and despite a funny comedy part in Tropic Thunder, he went on to make Valkyrie and Knight & Day as well as producing The Eye and Death Race. Ouch.

The Wind Rises Review

Essential

For what he has said will be his final film, animation maestro Hayao Miyazaki tackles a controversial biopic that could just as easily have been shot in live action. It's as if he's challenging filmmakers to use their imaginations and make the best movies they can make in whatever way they can. And the result is utterly magical, transcending the touchy subject matter to tell a story about the purity of creativity.

Based on the life of aviation engineer Jiro Horikoshi, this Oscar-nominated film opens in the 1920s when young Jiro (voiced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the English version) decides to study aeronautics because his poor eyesight won't let him become a pilot. So he dreams of designing the perfect plane, and his inventive approach catches the attention of Mitsubishi, which assigns him to a secret military project working with Japan's allies in Nazi Germany. Meanwhile, Jiro meets Nahoko (Emily Blunt) and they fall for each other as she struggles to recover from tuberculosis and he grapples with the moral issues of designing a beautiful plane that will be used to kill people in wartime.

Clearly this isn't the kind of animated movie Hollywood would ever produce: it's packed with complex characters who don't always do the right thing, and it takes a perspective that requires sympathy with someone who could be considered a historical villain. But Miyazaki tells the story exquisitely, animating the scenes with such inventiveness that it's impossible not to get lost in the breathtaking imagery. Scenes are also packed with lively side characters, including Jiro's bulldog-like boss (Martin Short), a more grounded colleague (John Krazinski) and a suspicious foreigner (Werner Herzog) who seems to be following Jiro.

Jiro Horikoshi is an aeronautical engineer whose childhood was filled with dreams about becoming a pilot. His poor vision meant that he would never realise his ambition, but he is encouraged to keep up his passion by Italian plane designer Caproni. Resolving to design aircrafts instead of fly them, Jiro studies the art at university, during which time he meets an attractive young woman named Naoko. Their relationship was born out of the dangerous circumstances of the Great Kanto Earthquake, throughout which they helped one another off a fast moving train. As their life together progresses, Naoko falls ill and Jiro struggles to bring in a regular income. He must succeed in the challenge of building the most exquisitely beautiful aeroplane in the world in order to get back on his feet, as his career could be the only thing he has left.

'The Wind Rises' is romantic, heart-wrenching animated adventure directed and written by the Oscar winning Hayao Miyazaki ('Spirited Away', 'Princess Mononoke', 'Howl's Moving Castle'). This Japanese drama, loosely based on Tatsuo Hori's 1936 short story 'The Wind Has Risen', features the voices of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci in the English version. It is due for release in the UK on May 9th 2014.

Tom Cruise's 'Edge Of Tomorrow': Everything You Need To Know

Tom Cruise Emily Blunt

Tom Cruise is back in sci-fi action epic ‘Edge of Tomorrow’, where he’s doomed to die, die and die again, as a solider who gets caught in a time loop fighting an alien race. The battle commences in June but the latest trailer has just been released, so are you ready for what some are calling ‘Starship Troopers’ meets ‘Groundhog Day’?

Tom Cruise in 'Edge of Tomorrow'Tom Cruise in 'Edge of Tomorrow'

Far from being a Hollywood invention, ’Edge of Tomorrow’ is actually adapted from the Japanese light novel ‘All You Need Is Kill ‘ by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. ‘Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters’ writer Dante W. Harper first adapted it into a script in 2010 and the rights to it were quickly bought up by Warner Bros for the handsome sum of $3 million. From its very early days Doug Liman, the man behind the camera for the ‘Bourne Identity’ and ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ was on board to direct and the first lead actor being looked at was Brad Pitt. Originally it still had the ‘All You Need Is Kill’ title from the original novel, but another name, ‘We Are Mortals’ was being talked about before ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ was settled on.

The Wind Rises may not have been the flashiest or most talked-about movie at last night's Academy Awards but could prove to be one of the most arresting animated movies of all time upon its widespread UK release in May. Animated in the distinctive, delicate and detailed anime style, the Japanese film deals with challenging historical events and presents them in a creative yet respectful way. Halle Berry married Olivier Martinez this weekend, according to reports in E! The ceremony appears to have taken place at the Chateau des Conde in Vallery, France. Photographs of guests arriving at the ceremony and the couple in their wedding car are likely signs the couple did finally tie the knot. Berry is a stickler for details and promised the wedding would only be "very small", as she said in an interview with InStyle magazine.

Tom Cruise in full regalia on the set of All You Need Is Kill

On a brisk but otherwise unremarkable day, Londoners might've been disturbed to see the sight of two people in combat gear wielding guns and generally causing a scene. They can relax, though, because it was merely Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt shooting scenes for the forthcoming science-fiction film All You Need Is Kill. The film, which isn't expected to see daylight until 2014, is based on the Japanese light novel of the same name by writer Hiroshi Sakurazaka and acts as a sort of sci-fi alien vs. human Groundhog Day.

A Year Of Surprises? Golden Globes Have No Clear Winner

Helen Mirren Maggie Smith Judi Dench Naomi Watts Emily Blunt Daniel Day Lewis Ben Affleck

This year's Golden Globes ceremony takes place tonight (Jan 13), and its categories - much like the categories in most of this years awards - look wide open.

At the Golden Globes in particular, it looks as though this year could see the bulk of the prizes going to British recipients, with the ladies in particular providing hope that a few gongs will be getting sent across the Atlantic. Dames Helen Mirren, Maggie Smith and Judi Dench are all vying for awards, with Dame Smith up for two acting gongs - for The Quartet and Downton Abbey. Meanwhile Aussie-Brit Naomi Watts, Emily Blunt and Rachel Weisz are up for awards, whilst Daniel Day-Lewis is looking like the man to beat in the Best Actor category.

Still, Day-Lewis could be beat, meaning he will have to wait til his next film to take his tally of awards up a notch (he always gets nominated at the very least). Joaquin Phoenix and Denzel Washington are probably his biggest threats, but really the award is pretty much Lewis' already. If he doesn't win though, there's a pretty good chance that Damien Lewis could bring the gold home for the UK, being nominated in the television category for Best Actor for his role on Homeland.

The Brits Are Coming! Ewan McGregor And Emily Blunt Score Golden Globe Nominations

Ewan McGregor Emily Blunt Judi Dench Rachel Weisz Steven Spielberg Ben Affleck Anne Hathaway

Several British stars scored Golden Globe nominations on Friday morning (December 14, 2012), with Tom Hooper's Les Miserables looking the UK's best hope of scoring a statuette. The musical is in the running for Best Picture (Comedy of Musical), as well as a string of acting awards.

Though the Globes is considered a solid barometer for the Oscars, it has been criticised for shaping its nominations to attract as many big name stars as possible. In 2011, Johnny Depp was nominated for his role in the critically panned The Tourist, leading host Ricky Gervais to joke, "It seems like everything this year was three-dimensional.except the characters in The Tourist." Nevertheless, several lesser known movies from the past year received nominations, including Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt's Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. Judi Dench received a nod for Best Exotic Marigold Hotel while Helen Mirren and Rachel Weisz will compete for the Best Actress (Drama) award for their roles in Hitchcock and The Deep Blue Sea respectively. "It's the first major red carpet occasion of awards season," said Nick James, editor of the film magazine Sight & Sound, "so the HFPA need the maximum number of dresses on that carpet, and the widest range of hot talent on their list. They probably have a small eye on that, but I don't think it's too bent in that direction."

Though British stars were listed in today's nominations, it is likely to be Ben Affleck, Steven Spielberg, Kathryn Bigelow, Daniel Day Lewis, Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathway who contest the major prizes.

Harper's Bazaar's Women Of The Year 2012 All Dazzled In More Ways Than One

Emily Blunt Jessica Ennis Victoria Pendleton Ellie Simmonds Vivienne Westwood Cindy Sherman Ruth Wilson Emeli Sande

All of the guests and winners at last night's Harpers Bazaar Women of the Year Awards looked utterly stunning on the red carpet. Many have noted Emily Blunt's show-stopping backless orange number, and how beautiful Daisy Lowe looked in her timelessly-classic sequined gown, but the wardrobes of the guests were not the reason anyone showed up, nor why the awards are so important to the influential women of the world.

"Now we [women] are expected to do everything, which probably isn't human," the Telegraph quotes Stella McCartney saying "and we are in danger of burning out if we try to do everything." A full interview with McCartney, as well as with other winners of the awards, will be published in the December issue of Harper's Bazaar, which will be dedicated to the women. French actress Marion Cotillard will appear on the front cover, with whom the magazine also has a full interview inside.

In a year flush with the monarchy, Queen Elizabeth has also won the accolade of Icon of the Year. The queen has as yet not commented upon this win, but we've no doubt she'll be celebrating in her own way. Ambassadors of the year were awarded to three of this year's Olympic winners, Jessica Ennis, Victoria Pendleton and Ellie Simmons, who have jointly provided brand new, healthy role models for young women today. A special award was given In Memoriam to Marie Colvin who was an American reporter, killed earlier this year while covering the siege of Homs in Syria, where a nail bomb exploded, killing her.

Looper Review

Excellent

For a time travel thriller, this film is remarkably free of head-scratching anomalies in the plot, instead concentrating on richly developed characters and goosebump-inducing action. This is an unusually intimate action blockbuster, which gives the cast a chance to do something more resonant than we expect. And writer-director Rian Johnson takes a Christopher Nolan-style approach to the story, using intelligence and strikingly inventive filmmaking to draw us in.

Johnson is also reuniting with his Brick star Gordon-Levitt. He plays Joe, a looper in 2044 Kansas whose job is to kill men who are sent back 30 years in time by the mob, even though time travel has been outlawed. Joe knows that one day his victim will be his older self, sent back to close his loop, giving him 30 years of retirement. But when the older Joe (Willis) appears, he escapes, and now a manhunt is on. If Joe doesn't catch his older self, his boss (Daniels) will do something even more drastic than a vicious henchman (Dillahunt) has in mind. So Joe hides out in a rural farmhouse with single mother Sara (Blunt) and her young son Cid (Gagnon), with whom Joe creates an unusual bond.

The film is beautifully shot and edited, with a noir tone established by a knowing narration and the fact that most characters are addicted to a drug they take as eye-drops. And while it opens with some lively humour and witty edginess, things become darker as the story unfolds, especially when older Joe starts hunting Terminator-style for the younger version of an evil man who has too much power in the future. The hitch is that this man is a 5-year-old in the present day.

Looper Trailer

Joe Simmons is a looper from Kansas City in 2042; a hitman hired to assassinate victims sent to him by a gang of mobsters from thirty years into the future through the outlawed method of time travel. The only rule put to him is that the targets must not escape. One day, on his regular duties, a new victim shows up who happens to be without the customary sack over his head. When he looks up, Joe recognises the man as an older version of himself and his sudden shock gives his future self the opportunity to disarm him and make a break for it. When Joe's criminal employees find out about the escape, they set out to destroy him for his failure. It doesn't take long for him to convince himself that he must kill his future self despite the fact that he is being used in order for the lawless organisation to 'close the loop'.

Video - Emily Blunt Ignores Photographers Compliments As She Leaves Hair Salon

'The Devil Wears Prada' star Emily Blunt snubs photographers greetings and compliments as she leaves a West Hollywood hair salon and jumps into her black Toyota parked nearby.

The 29-year-old actress, who is set to star in the upcoming sci-fi action movie 'Looper' alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt, is definitely looking better in this video than she did as she left a gym earlier today (July 24th 2012) after her pilates class wearing a grey T-shirt with embarrassing sweat patches in the armpit and stomach area in pictures reported by the Daily Mail

Your Sister's Sister Review

Weak
As with Humpday, writer-director Shelton plays around with transgressive sexuality in this lively, watchable comedy-drama. The problem is that instead of dissipating, the underlying sense of homophobia is aggressively offensive this time.

A year after his brother's death, Jack (Duplass) has become best friends with his brother's ex Iris (Blunt), who suggests that he take some time out in her father's island cabin outside Seattle. When he arrives, Iris' sister Hannah (DeWitt) is there, nursing her pain from the breakup of a long-term relationship. After a few drinks they end up in bed, which is a problem for two reasons: Hannah is a lesbian who wants a baby, and Iris arrives the next day to tell her sister that she's in love with Jack.

The Five-Year Engagement Review

Excellent
Segel and Stoller repeat their duties from 2008's Forgetting Sarah Marshall and come up with another hilarious romantic-comedy for grown-ups. It's corny, but it keeps us laughing all the way through while stirring in some genuinely sweet moments.

A year after they met, San Francisco chef Tom (Segel) proposes to his girlfriend Violet (Blunt), but their excited wedding plans are interrupted when Violet gets a post-doc position at the University of Michigan. So they postpone the wedding and head to the snowy Midwest. There, Violet's career soars while Tom has little to do beyond making sandwiches in a deli and going hunting with his new friends. And before they can set a new date, Violet's sister (Brie) marries and has two kids with Tom's best pal (Pratt).

Salmon Fishing In The Yemen Review

Good
The heavy hand of a screenwriter (or perhaps novelist) intrudes on an otherwise jaunty, engaging little story, fruitlessly trying to stir up suspense when none was needed. And filmmaker Hallstrom indulges in rather too much sappy sentiment.

Fred (McGregor) is a UK government fishing expert assigned to help a wildly wealthy sheikh (Waked) create a fly-fishing site in the Yemen. Working with the sheikh's financial advisor Harriet (Blunt), Fred struggles to overcome his doubts about the scheme. But he's won over by the fact that the sheikh is both passionate about fishing and has enough cash to achieve the seemingly impossible. As Fred begins to fall for Harriet, he'll need to make a decision about his estranged wife (Stirling), while Harriet's special-services boyfriend (Mison) has gone missing in action.
