Emma Stone is currently in talks with Disney to play the evil Cruella de Vil in the studio’s live action re-make of 101 Dalmations, according to new reports.

The Hollywood Reporter stated on Thursday (January 7th) that Disney wants to begin shooting the movie, with a working title of Cruella and detailing an ‘origin story’ about the dog-hating, fashion-obsessed villainess, by the end of 2016.

The project does not yet have a director, but a screenplay by British writer Kelly Marcel (of Saving Mr Banks and Fifty Shades of Grey) has already been completed. Disney is said to be treating the project “as a priority,” according to the report.

Emma StoneCould Emma Stone be in line to portray Cruella de Vil in a new Disney live-action re-make?

Cruella de Vil is, of course, the evil figure hellbent on capturing the titular Dalmatians in order to make a coat out of their hides.

In the 1961 animated version, Cruella was voiced by Betty Lou Gerson and was portrayed as a wealthy woman with an obsession for fur-based fashion. In the successful 1996 live-action remake 101 Dalmations (and its ill-fated 2000 sequel 102 Dalmations), the character was portrayed by Glenn Close, this time as the head of a fashion design house.

It’s just the latest Disney project to create live-action remakes of its own animated back catalogue. Following a $500 million success with Cinderella last year, it has new spins on Tinker Bell, Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, Winnie the Pooh and Pinocchio slated for production either now or in the near future.

Since making her film debut in Superbad back in 2007, Stone has appeared in blockbusters such as The Amazing Spider-Man and done voice work for popular kids’ movies like The Croods, as well as critically acclaimed movies like the Oscar-winning Birdman and Zombieland.
