Etta James is now sadly in the terminal stages of leukaemia, with attention now turning to the future of her vast $1 million estate. A Riverside County judge ruled on Monday (December 19, 2011) that her long time husband Artis Mills will remain as the conservator, despite her son Donto James requesting to takeover, reports the Los Angeles Times.
The singer, 73, best known for her hits 'At Last' and 'I'd Rather Go Blind', has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the music business. Having battled cancer for several years, her doctor Elaine James confirmed to the New York Times that she is now terminally ill, saying, "I am Southern and Christian and would just ask for the prayers of her fans and friends they know she's been sick, but not how sick". The agreement reached in court will see Etta's estate remain the property of Artis, whom she married in 1969 - he will also make health and financial decisions for the stricken performer. Reacting to the decision, son Donto merely signalled his desire to be with his mother for as long as possible, saying of Artis, "Mr. Mills' aim is to keep her alive as long as possible. That's my aim too".
Etta's around-the-clock physician Dr James, who made the announcement of the singer's terminal illness last week, is said to be receiving a monthly salary of $30,000.
