X-Men: Apocalypse Review

Very Good

This closing chapter of the First Class trilogy falls into the same trap as The Last Stand, the final part in the original X-Men trilogy: it shifts the focus from character detail and social commentary into a more standard effects-heavy action brawl. There's still a lot of strong character detail, and a big story that can't help but be entertaining. But it's impossible to escape the feeling that the film's scale is far bigger than it needed to be.

It's now 1983, and while Professor X (James McAvoy) works with Hank (Nicholas Hoult) to set up his school for young mutants, his old friend and nemesis Erik (Michael Fassbender) has started a family in a rural corner of Poland. But he can't hide forever. Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) is roaming the world helping mutants where she can, meeting the teleporting Kurt (Kodi Smit-McPhee) in Berlin before heading to Cairo. There, CIA operative Moira (Rose Byrne) has just uncovered a bizarre underground cult that has revived the ancient super-mutant Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), who immediately sets out on a quest to cleanse the planet and start over again. He needs four assistants, and the question is which of the X-Men will go over to the dark side.

This is the third comic book movie in a row about superheroes fighting each other, after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Captain America: Civil War. And it's similarly enormous (all three films are around two-and-a-half hours long), with mammoth battles that don't quite make logical sense but are compelling enough that the audience goes with them. This film has a bit more emotional depth, including back-stories that have been developed with unusual complexity. But some characters fall through the cracks.

X-Men Apocalypse - Teaser Trailer

Mutants and humans alike are familiar with the story of Apocalypse, he was the first mutant and began harnessing his power in ancient times. Now, millions of years after his reign, Apocalypse is reborn and finds himself in the middle of a modern society and shocked by the direction both human and mutant life has taken.

Feeling there are few options left, Apocalypse calls on the help of Magneto and a group of other mutants to help 'cleanse' the earth of all the citizens who have contributed to its downfall. The Horsemen of the Apocalypse - headed by Magneto - start to wreak havoc around the world and it looks like the X-Men's attempts to save it are all but lost - especially when their team is badly hurt by the loss of one member.

Brian Singer directs X-Men Apocalypse which reunites the lead cast from X-Men: Days of Future Past and sees the addition of Sophie Turner as Jean Grey and Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse.

The Kickass actor has a bloodied nose and what looked distinctly like a bite mark, leading to Roberts being arrest after it appeared she had inflicted the wounds upon her lover.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past Has Found Its Quicksilver In Evan Peters

Evan Peters

As the release of X-Men: Days Of Future Past approaches, a surprising casting decision has been announced – Evan Peters will be playing Quicksilver, Access Hollywood reports. The news is exciting, but a bit confusing, not because of Peters himself, but because of the idea that Quicksilver will be in the film at all. DoFP director Brian Singer announced the news over Twitter this Thursday: “Thrilled to say #EvanPeters is joining#XMen #DaysOfFuturePast as#Quicksilver.”

In an earlier tweet, which he later deleted, the director commented: “Before he was an #Avenger, he was just a REALLY fast kid. Thrilled to say#EvanPeters is joining#XMen #DaysOfFuturePast as #Quicksilver.”

Therein lies the problem and/or possible opportunity that would blow the minds of Marvel fans. In the Marvel universe, Quicksilver is the incredibly fast son of Magneto (and brother to Red Witch), who as we all know is the main baddie in the X Men series. Bear with us here, because this is where it gets a bit mixed up: after his exploits with the X-Men, the character moves on to join the Avengers. On the legal side of things, Fox have acquired the rights to the X-Men storyline and characters, but Marvel still produce The Avengers films (to great success as Iron Man 3 reminded us). So where does that leave Quicksilver for the rest of the Avengers franchise? Is a crossover between the rival studios even possible? We can only dare to dream.

American Horror Story: Asylum Digs Deep Into Our Fears

Jessica Lange Evan Peters

With a name lacking all subtly, such as 'American Horror Story', anyone might assume that this American TV show was something of a spoof, or parody of the horror genre. It's not. It's out and out horror and it's scary as hell. The second season began last night (17th Oct. 2012) and is a complete departure from the first series in every way, except for the incessant scares that it dishes up.

People Magazine noted that "where last season quietly crept into your psyche, this one jumps out from your closet and attacks you head on". Indeed, the contemporary setting of the first series required a greater level of subtly, but by harking back to 1964 as season 2 does, it opens all the doors to obvious, though not ineffective homage to the era that inspired the golden age of horror films such as the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Hitchcock's seminal scary movie 'Psycho'. Season 2 is set in an Asylum, hence the title, with an ominous Sister that presides over the establishment, and an utterly terrifying unknown creature that stalks the woods surrounding the institution.

Plus, as the Huffington Post points out, it raises some serious and difficult moral questions: "The messy collision of fear and desire; the conflict between the need to be seen as 'good' and the inevitable tendency to rebel against conformity; the idea that the Devil is an intelligent charmer and ferociously committed opponent whose ways are as mysterious as God's; the idea that the contents of your mind are driving you mad or could be made to drive you crazy: all these things are laid out upon Asylum's grisly examining table."

Zachary Quinto Jenna Dewan Jessica Lange James Cromwell Evan Peters Joseph Fiennes Sarah Paulson

If you thought the premiere of American Horror Story Season 2 was good, you had better prepare yourself for some serious thrills in episode two.

If you don’t want to know what happens, then stop reading now, but if you just can’t wait until the next episode hits your television screens, then read on, there’s some pretty exciting stuff in store.

As the first episode ended, so the second begins, with Theresa (played by Jenna Dewan Tatum) running away from the gruesome Bloody Face. We’ll tell you that much, but we won’t tell you what happens to her, just yet. What we will tell you though is that Zachary Quinto makes his debut as Dr. Oliver Thredson. E! Online have described him as “a breath of fresh air for viewers” and fans of the show will relish seeing how he interacts with the likes of Sister Jude (Jessica Lange) and Dr. Arden (James Cromwell) when he comes to Briarcliffe to assess whether or not Kit (Evan Peters) is fit for trial. He learns a thing or two about modern psychiatric teachings, from a patient who suggests that not all can be explained by what he has already learned.

Kick-Ass Review

Excellent
The team behind Stardust brings us the superhero movie we always wanted: brazen, raucous and without a single politically correct moment from start to finish. And yes, it's both wildly rude and great fun.

Dave (Johnson) is a shy New York teen who wonders why no one sticks up for each other. So he creates a secret alter-ego, Kick-Ass, and sets out to make a difference. Of course he gets beaten to a pulp. But he also catches the city's imagination. The problem is that gangster Frank (Strong) thinks he's to blame for a series of setbacks and helps his son (Mintz-Plasse) create a rival hero, Red Mist. But Frank's nemesis is actually a man (Cage) who has turned his 12-year-old daughter (Moretz) into a killing machine.
