When he is not doing his day job as a movie stunt driver and mechanic, a man known only as The Driver moonlights as a getaway driver at night. His one rule is simple: as long as his clients return to his car within five minutes, he will help them get away. If they don't, he leaves.
His neighbour is a young woman named Irene, whose husband is in jail, leaving her to raise their son on her own. When her husband comes out of jail, though, he needs The Driver's help: he is being forced into carrying out a robbery by gangsters, as payment for protection money that he owes. The Driver agrees, but only because he has fallen in love with Irene and fears that she will be hurt in the ensuing problem. As a result, he has a contract put on him when the heist goes badly wrong.
Drive premiered at Cannes in May 2011, where Nicolas Winding Refn won the Best Director Award. It will premiere in the UK and the US in September.
