Hugo is a twelve year old boy who lives in Paris and loves mysteries. One day, in 1930, his father presents him with a wind up figure. His father tells him it's a music box that a magician probably built. The only thing missing is the key used to wind up the music box. The keyhole is in the shape of a heart. Hugo and his father want to find the heart shaped key - whose whereabouts is a mystery - so they can make their music box work.
One day, when Hugo is fixing the music box, he is informed that there was a fire, which his father perished in. Hugo, now an orphan, starts living in the walls of a train station, with the wind up figure that his father gave him. It is there, while running from the station inspector that he runs into Isabelle, a girl around his age who loves mysteries too. Hugo is particularly interested in the key that Isabelle wears around her neck - it is heart shaped and it fits into the music box's keyhole.
From there, Hugo and Isabelle are pulled into an exciting adventure, one that threatens to reveal the secret of the music box shaped like a wind up figure.
