In the near future, the world's population lives until the age of 25. After that, if you want to live longer, you must work hard to earn more time or, alternatively, you can inherit or illegally steal it. The rich have almost unlimited access to all the time in the world, thereby making them immortal. The poor die young. Any time you have remaining shows on your arm as a constant reminder.
Will Salas and his mother, Rachael, struggle to earn more time. Will's time is almost up when he meets a rich man, who is over one hundred years old despite looking very young. He tells Will he's had enough of living and transfers his remaining time over to Will, before dying shortly after. Will now has over a hundred years to live.
But the consequences of this act of kindness mean that Will is charged for murder. He lies low in the ghetto for a while, and then teams up with jaded heiress, Sylvia Weis, to try and overthrow the corrupt system of overpopulation in place.
