Shirley and her Aunt Bam go to the doctor's, where Shirley is told that her cancer has returned. As a deeply religious woman, she is not upset by this; instead, she invites her three children, all adults, for a family dinner so she can break the news to them.
Shirley's children - Kimberly, Tammy and Byron - arrive but it's clear from the start that it's not going to be a happy reunion. Kimberly and Tammy can't stand each other and most of their conversations between each other are insults. Byron has problems with his ex girlfriend, Sabrina and their baby son and his current girlfriend, Renee. His drama follows him to the family dinner and he hardly has time to catch up with his sisters. In fact, all three of Shirley's children have grown distant over the years and they don't have a kind word to say about each other.
Shirley desperately wants to tell her children she loves them but it's difficult with the drama going on with all three of them. As always, its Shirley's other aunt, Madea, who brings the family together and dispenses some important life lessons to them all.
