Mary Dinkle is a young girl who lives on the fringes of Melbourne, Australia, she's 8 years old and terribly lonely, she feels she doesn't have any friends and that needs to change! Max Horovitz is a New Yorker, he suffers from Asperger's Syndrome and very infrequently leaves his flat, the 44 year old also feels very lonely in his life.

Mary and Max's exchange details on a pen friend scheme and the story spans over twenty years of exchanging letters and gradually their friendship develops, the two friends find one and other the only people they can truly confide in. As Mary turns into a young lady and Max grows older, the two discuss everything from where babies come from to kleptomania!
