What would motivate men and women to leave their families and any kind of life they know for a planet so far away from Earth they must be placed into a comatosed sleep for 120 years? Aurora Dunn and Jim Preston are just two of the people who have volunteered for the mission.
Aurora is a journalist who has always had an interest in space and Jim Preston is a mechanical engineer who wants to cut ties with his current life and start afresh. They are just two of 5000+ people who decide to head to the new colony on the spaceship Avalon.
As they enter their enforced sleep the spaceship begins a its mission. 30 years pass and without any knowledge of why, Jim Preston awakes on the ship. Looking around he sees that the other citizens are still in a hibernated slumber and begins to ask for answers as to what's happened.
Exploring the ship, Preston and Dunn cast eyes at one another and find they're the only ones to be awake. With their minimal belongings, the pair begin to live as normal life as they possibly can. Preston uses his mechanical engineering knowledge to their advantage and almost a year passes and they find themselves no closer to re-entering their essential hibernation.
Jim eventually asks Aurora on a date and the pair visit the bar on the spaceship, the two grow close but disaster strikes the ship and places everyone in grave danger. Risking their lives, the couple must do what they can to protect the ship and the passengers on board.
The script for Passengers was originally finished in 2007 but for various reasons (and despite critical acclaim) the story never reached production level. Finally in 2014 it was announced that Sony Pictures had taken on the rights.
