Skeeter has always dreamt of becoming a writer; fresh out of college she attempts to get a job at one of New York's best publishing houses but unfortunately isn't successful at landing the job. Returning home she starts to write a column for the local news paper but is distracted by personal matters when she learns that the family maid, who raised Skeeter, has gone missing.
Uncomfortable and frustrated with the southern way of life, black men and women being treated as second class citizens - or even slaves - and raising white children with no recognition for their help and input, Skeeter decides she's going to take drastic action. With the help of maids from the households of friends and acquaintances she, Aibileen and Minny begin a secret project and record some of the day to day trials and tribulations of being a black woman working in a white household.
