In the not too distant future, America has been destroyed by drought, famine and fires. In its place, Panem has emerged, split into twelve districts and ruled over by the Capitol.

In the early days of Panem, there was a rebellion against the Capitol. As punishment, the Capitol decides to hold the Hunger Games. By way of a lottery, two children between the ages of 12 and 18 are selected from each of the districts and placed in a dangerous outdoor arena, which is controlled by the Capitol. The 'contestants' of sorts are called tributes and while in the arena, they must all fight to the death, on live television, until one remains.

In District 12, formerly the Appalachian region, a young girl, Primrose, is initially chosen but her sister, Katniss, takes her place in the Games, along with a friend from school, Peeta, who has an unrequited love for Katniss.

The Games begin, with Katniss and Peeta being pitted against some individuals who have trained for the Games their whole life. Can either of them survive?
