The Flaming Lips - Oczy Mlody Album Review

It's no secret that I have somewhat of a love/hate relationship with The Flaming Lips. One of the greatest live acts you can hope to see, and capable of making truly transcendent albums, their recent output has been perplexing to me. Whilst 2013's The Terror shared much in common with their early psychedelic experimentation it lacked any sort of charm or melodic sweetness that had underpinned Wayne Coyne's most commercially successful songs. The follow-up album With A Little Help From My Fwends was a covers record that the world was neither waiting for, nor needed. However I still believe that The Flaming Lips have something valuable to contribute that has yet to be revealed. Thankfully album number fifteen, Oczy Mlody, goes someway towards confirming there's still mileage in the Oklahoma band's tank.

The Flaming Lips - Oczy Mlody Album Review

During the early stages of the record Coyne coos gently through a drug fuelled haze; "Are you with us? Are you burning out?" ('How'). It seems like a recognition of the divisive nature of The Flaming Lips' output in the last decade, but it also seems like a promise of something intriguing to come, it's a promise that's for the most part fulfilled with Oczy Mlody. There's an awful lot in common with The Terror throughout, again this is a fever-dream mood piece with no emphasis on any one particular song. Unlike The Terror's combative and isolating aural assault though, The Flaming Lips have infused a strong sense of melody into these twelve songs, ultimately that leads to a far more satisfying experience.

Unsurprisingly there are lots of lyrical references to unicorns, wizards, and mushrooms, but that's all part of the fun really. If you do get on board with what Coyne is trying to do with Oczy Mlody, which I suspect is why he poses that question directly to the listener so early on in proceedings; the fantastical details of the experience he creates become less of an annoyance and more like a DayGlo fairytale. If you're looking for the emotional punch of something like 'Do You Realise?' you're probably in the wrong place, but there certainly is merit in recreating a mind-altering fantasy here. Coyne feels he has something to say about the basics of human experience.

Miley Cyrus Joined Onstage By Pamela Anderson On Last Night Of 'Dead Petz' Tour

Miley Cyrus Flaming Lips Pamela Anderson

Miley Cyrus closed out the final date of her ‘Dead Petz’ tour with The Flaming Lips in chaotic style, in a Los Angeles show that featured fake breasts, prosthetic penises and Pamela Anderson!

With the stage at The Wiltern in L.A. full to bursting with all manner of dancing creatures, two people in a rainbow costume and a panoply of psychedelic stage props, Cyrus invited the ex-‘Baywatch’ star Anderson onstage to send a message to stop killing whales.

Miley Cyrus teamed up with the Flaming Lips for a cover of Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday (April 18, 2014). However, the unlikely collaboration came via satellite link-up from Manchester Arena in the UK, where Miley is currently touring.

Possibly the only major festival where you can enjoy fine gourmet cuisine while rocking out to an eclectic variety of international artists, Outside Lands has now unveiled the 2014 line-up as it prepares to return to San Francisco this August.

We just can't express our excitement enough at the newly revealed line-up for Outside Lands this year. Topping the bill are the likes of Kanye West, The Killers and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers; three very different artists which see the latter become the first act ever to headline twice following their incredible set in 2013. Now in its seventh year, Outside Lands are showing signs of development every single summer, and at much benefit for the city with a percentage of every ticket sale going to San Francisco's Recreation and Park Department.

Miley Cyrus Sings With The Flaming Lips: Why It Was Actually A Pretty Good Cover [Video]

Miley Cyrus Wayne Coyne Flaming Lips Katy Perry

In one of the more surreal collaborations of recent times, pop star Miley Cyrus has teamed up with The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd for a performance of the latter's hit 'Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Part 1' during the former's concert. During her Bangerz tour show at LA's Staples Center, Miley welcomed the Oklahoman rockers onstage for a cover collaboration.

Miley Cyrus Welcomed The Flaming Lips Onstage For Another Cover Song.

Considering Miley's demographic is comprised of mostly pre-teens, there's little surprise than fan footage from the event shows almost no one singing along with Coyne and Cyrus but The Flaming Lips were given a warm welcome of manic screams nonetheless. Since footage from the 'Yoshimi' cover hit the internet, reactions have been divided between those who think Miley chose a great song to cover whilst showcasing her impressive voice, and those who feel that even with Wayne and Steven present, a classic song has been butchered.

Kissing Katy Perry, Singing With The Flaming Lips - All In A Night's Work For Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus Katy Perry Flaming Lips

Miley Cyrus might have all the confidence in the world… but Katy Perry just wasn’t in the mood at Cyrus’ gig at Los Angeles’ Staples Center. A lot of stuff happened at Miley’s Saturday concert, but there’s one moment in particular set the blogs atwitter by Sunday morning. During her performance of Adore You, Cyrus spotted her fellow pop star in the crowd and went in for what Perry must have assumed was a chaste peck on the cheek. Instead, the Dark Horse singer pulled away stunned after Miley went for a full on make out.At least that’s what the video released by TMZ suggests.

Miley Cyrus
Miley just couldn't win over Katy Perry for some reason.

Other than that, the show went smoothly enough and Cyrus even managed to have a fangirl moment of her own, as Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd of Flaming Lips joined her onstage for a cover of their own “Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Part 1” It was a clean cover and Miley definitely contributed despite being visibly nervous throughout.

Ben Walton's Top Albums Of 2013

This top ten leans more on the rock end of the spectrum but there are also a few curve balls in there. Honourable mentions go to some big bands who put out great albums (Pearl Jam, Suede) which were omitted to make room for some smaller bands who I feel are deserving of the exposure. Without further ado and in reverse order:

Kings Of Leon's 'Supersoaker' Is First Single From 'Mechanical Bull' [Listen]

Kings Of Leon have released 'Supersoaker,' the first single from their forthcoming album Mechanical Bull. The soulful effort features the band's signature anthemic guitar bursts and Caleb Followill's scowling vocals. All in all, it's pretty standard fare from the Nashville four-piece and it suggests more of the same for the band's sixth LP.

The Flaming Lips And The Yeah Yeah Yeahs For The Great Googamooga Festival

Yeah Yeah Yeahs Flaming Lips

The Great GoogaMooga will be returning this year to Prospect Park in Brooklyn New York, with another heavyweight line-up of food and music assured.

Among those announced for the music section of the festival include The Flaming Lips, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Darkness, Matt & Kim and De La Soul. The Flaming Lips return next week with their new album The Terror, arguably their greatest work to date though perhaps also their bleakest, which means there’ll be some anticipation as to how they approach their set. Usually a colorful celebratory shower, which sees confetti guns go off and Wayne Coyne, their front man walk out into the crowd inside a giant balloon, these bleak new tracks won’t really fit with that aesthetic. Thankfully the boisterous punk group Yeah Yeah Yeahs will add some cheer to proceedings, as will preposterous metallers The Darkness, while you can always rely on De La Soul to get the good vibes going.

As for the food vendors, The NY Eater reports that the line-up will feature teams from over 85 restaurants, including Gwynnett St., Eataly, M. Wells, Maison Premiere, Momofuku Milk Bar, Roberta's, Rosemary's, and Umami Burger. The Nomad, PDT, and Pouring Ribbons are apparently going to serve drinks as a part of the "VIP Cocktail experience," and the beverage tents will offer over 75 beers and over 100 wines. The event takes place on the weekend of May 17th.

The Flaming Lips - The Terror Album Review

The Flaming Lips thirteenth studio offering is a difficult album in every sense of the word: difficult to love, difficult to decipher, and difficult to listen to. Perhaps it's the absence of traditional song writing in favour of space age ambience that makes the experience so unsettling. While it would be unfair to expect Wayne Coyne and co to re-tread past glories, there's always been a sense of underlying fun to their brand of psychedelic wackiness. The Terror, as its name suggests, jettisons any sense of fun leaving a bleak soundscape which is sure to divide fans.

The Flaming Lips - The Terror Album Review

While there is artistic merit here, it's a record that becomes so self-involved in the intricacies of the noises that phase in and out of your headphones, that Coyne's distorted and repetitive vocals get pushed to the back of the mix. Although he's not really saying much to enlighten the whole experience, it's rather disconcerting that his contribution seems to be somewhat of an afterthought. The root of all this sprawling introspection and gloom seems to lie in the genesis of the project itself. Primarily recorded at the same time as previous collaborative effort Heady Fwends, but in a separate studio, the band used their downtime to create material completely at odds with their main project. That led to a rejection of traditional chord progressions and structures, which more closely embraced their psychedelic roots.

Depending on how far you want to dig into the lyrics, there are loose themes unifying the material here. It's trying to raise the question of how to face a world without love while time marches on. Coyne's lyrical fascination with the sun and heavens ('Look. The Sun Is Rising') seems more ominous than hopeful as the new dawn brings new problems. However, the highbrow nature of the themes also serves to distance the listener. While many of The Flaming Lips' previous records have worked as concept albums, individual songs have also been able to stand on their own. Yet The Terror is such a dense soup of sounds and ideas that the unconventional nature of the tracks makes it almost impossible to separate them from the whole experience.

The Flaming Lips Go Madchester! Band To Cover Stone Roses Debut LP

Flaming Lips Stone Roses Polica

Well they did it with Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon, and now The Flaming Lips are set to turn their attention to another ‘classic’ album, by covering the entirety of The Stone Roses self-titled debut.

That album, released in 1989, was responsible for – among other things – a huge spike in the sales of fisherman’s hats, with fans eager to look like their man, drummer Alan ‘Reni’ Wren. Possibly. Sales of the slightly daft and ultimately flimsy headwear hadn’t been as good as again until the Manchester four-piece got back together again last year. Possibly. So we wonder whether the ‘Lips are seeking for a third coming of hats, or maybe they’re seeking to push their own brand of headgear – tie-dye bandanas perhaps? Although if anyone was going to bring those back it would be Hulk Hogan, and the last thing we (hadn’t) heard, was that his recently leaked sex tape hadn’t made one jot of difference to their sales. Sorry Terry.

Bestival Line-up An Eclectic Mix; Elton John And Snoop Dogg To Headline

Elton John Snoop Dogg Mia Flaming Lips

Bestival is slowly but surely ranking up alongside Glastonbury in the battle of the festivals. We're not sure why, but Great Britain seems to be the place to be for music festivals; despite the high chance of rain, millions flock to the fields every year.

It might have something to do with the stellar acts pulled in by the festival spirit year after year. Bestival - this year - is set to be headlined by rock legend Elton John, Hip Hop giant Snoop Dogg (sorry Snoop, we can't get on board with this Lion thing) while Mia, the Flaming Lips and the Roots add to an already stunning roster. John was a VIP guest at the first-ever Isle of Wight festival back in the 60s, "I went with a group of friends specifically to see Bob Dylan," John said. "He was fantastic. Sitting in that field I could never have imagined that just a year later Melody Maker would run the front page headline 'Dylan digs Elton!', after he came to one of my first shows in America."

But will a 65-year-old Elton don a fancy dress costume? Bestival is famous for them, so he'll probably have to. "As the person who played a concert at New York's Central Park in 1980 dressed in full Donald Duck costume including webbed feet, I think I know quite a bit about the power and fun of fancy dress! I can't wait to see the audience at Bestival: they must all look amazing from the stage." (via The Guardian).

Ke$ha Had Sexual Experience With A Ghost?

Kesha Black Keys Flaming Lips Wayne Coyne

Kesha claims she once had a sexual experience with a ghost. The 25-year-old pop star was speaking on KIIS FM about the inspiration and ideas behind her spooky new song ‘Supernatural’.

The single is the second to be taken from Kesha’s new album ‘Warrior,’ which is packed full of electro-rock and dance-pop themes. As for the writing of ‘Supernatural,’ the singer explained, “It's about experiences with the supernatural…but in a sexy way. I had a couple of experiences with the supernatural. I don't know his name! He was a ghost! I'm very open to it.” It seems as though the entire record was inspired by similar oddities, and Kesha added, “The theme of this record is magic. I went on a spirit journey by myself. No security guard. No managers. I just went around the world and lived on a boat.” Kesha’s Tik Tok single catapulted the Californian to fame in 2009, gaining generally mixed reviews, though selling millions. To be fair, she’s enlisted a pretty impressive team for the new record, with The Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney and The Flaming LipsWayne Coyne lending a hand, as well as rock stalwart Iggy Pop.

‘Warrior’ – the follow-up the Kesha’s 2010 debut LP ‘Animal’ – will be released on December 3, 2012.
