Florence + The Machine Edge Out Wolf Alice To UK No.1 Album Spot

Florence and the Machine Wolf Alice

In a very close sales race, Florence + The Machine have pipped Wolf Alice to the summit of the UK Albums Chart this weekend. Following a last-minute sales boost courtesy of her Glastonbury headline set, Florence won out over the indie newcomers by just 528 copies.

According the Official Charts Company, Florence’s third album How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful had been at Number 4 when the midweek chart was announced before the festival began, but the power of her performance, which was broadcast on the BBC, saw a surge in sales to reclaim the top spot that it had achieved when it was released originally at the start of June.

Friday's line-up is a particularly mixed bag; where you've got music veterans the likes of 80s new wave legends Tears For Fears and 70s R&B band Earth Wind & Fire, you also got newer names such as LA duo Mini Mansions, who recently won acclaim for their second album 'The Great Pretenders', and Brit award winning UK chart toppers Royal Blood. Making some noise on the main What Stage throughout though are house producer Deadmau5, 'To Pimp a Butterfly' rapper Kendrick Lamar and roots rock collective Alabama Shakes

Florence + The Machine Scores First U.S. Number 1 Album

Florence Welch may be recovering from a broken foot, but she’s got even more good news to make her feel better, as the third Florence + The Machine album has entered the American charts at Number One, her first record to reach the summit in the States.

How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful sold 137,000 copies in its first week on sale to debut at the top spot in the Billboard 200 albums chart, according to Nielsen SoundScan. As a result, Florence is one of the few artists who have managed to top the American and British albums charts at the same time – the ninth act to do so in the 2010s and the first since Ed Sheeran’s X last year.

Florence And The Machine - How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful Album Review

If 2011's 'Ceremonials' was the exorcism of Florence Welch, then the 28-year-old's follow up 'How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful' is her break-up album. While that may seem a somewhat fashionable move this year - Bjork and Best Coast have mined a similar vein - Florence utilises her songwriting like therapy here to create an accurate picture of angst, regret and rejection. That may not sound like the most enticing proposition, but stripping away many of the more esoteric references and flourishes of her previous work reveals a far more vulnerable and interesting Florence. Indeed, the album should carry a warning sticker for those who have ever fallen in love with the wrong person. That's how uncomfortably accurate many of the lyrical observations are across these eleven songs

Florence + The Machine - How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful Review

It's also rare to see four singles unveiled prior to the release of a tent pole album such as this. There's obviously a confidence at the record company that the songs stand up on their own without the wider context of the album itself. Maybe that's because the gravitas of the subject matter may put people off the complete package without an air of familiarity first. However well those tracks have performed they do have more impact here as the cumulative narrative builds a complete picture of Florence's post-relationship mood. Musically, there's also a shift in these songs. There's more guitar and brass, less reliance upon keyboards and big production, giving a more organic and intimate feel that was explored previously during the MTV unplugged show. There are still soaring choruses and call and responses multi-tracked vocals of course, but the track listing and sound of this record doesn't seem interchangeable with Florence + The Machine's previous two efforts. This is certainly a bespoke set of songs that work best as a concept album of sorts.

Lead single 'What Kind Of Man' replicates the darkness of 'Ceremonials' and demonstrates the anger you might expect from a break-up album as Florence's voice drips with venom over a jagged riff. It's lines like "To let me dangle at a cruel angle, my feet don't touch the floor" which cut to the heart of the matter here. But it's not all bitter rejection; as the album moves forward the first glimmers of hope start to shine through. Lines like "I know you're bleeding, but you'll be ok" ('Various Storms & Saints') and the internal conversation that forms the central theme of 'Delilah' demonstrate that there is a continuing narrative to the record. While the latter song relies upon a slightly clichéd idea of a phone call that never comes, the frankness and truth of the sentiment ensure that it avoids a reliance on overly familiar tropes. The most defiant and uplifting moment comes with the catharsis of 'Third Eye' which lyrically and musically re-instates a sense of confidence following a number of quieter and more contemplative songs.

Love him or hate him – and it really is one or the other, it seems – Kanye West at Glastonbury story has certainly got people talking about him more than ever before. While some are hailing the decision to make him the Saturday night headliner at the legendary festival, many others were left dismayed and even angry at the booking.

One disappointed ticketholder even went as far as to create an online petition at Change.org, just a few hours after Monday’s (March 16th) announcement. Neil Lonsdale, a lucky ticketholder for the 2015 festival, has attracted over 10,000 signatures for his petition as of Tuesday evening.

Jay Z's "$100 Bill" Is The Perfect Track To Capture The Empty Splendor Of The Jazz Age

Jay Z Florence and the Machine Jack White Lana Del Rey Beyonce Knowles

Maybe Jay Z isn’t the typical name you’d expect to see on the soundtrack of a film set in the 20s, but after the initial surprise, it turns out that the mogul and The Great Gatsby have more in common than you’d think. Both Jay’s (Z and Gatsby) are cool, aloof, sharply dressed types. Both are rich and both swim in luxury and glamour. And ok, maybe that’s where the similarities end, but you can see how Mr Carter is actually a fitting choice to work on the modernized soundtrack for the upcoming film. The rapper released “$100 Bill” today, to go “hand in hand” as he put it with the movie adaptation. But it’s not your typical soundtrack, oh no – after all, when have you heard of Jay Z doing anything typical? As the man himself put it for Blacktree.tv:

"It's not the typical soundtrack, or a standalone piece. The songs are pretty much in the film, so it goes hand in hand with each other. It had to fit pretty snug, it wasn't an afterthought."

Now he’s got us all eager and excited to hear it (well, and see the film obviously), especially considering that the full soundtrack will feature songs by Florence and the Machine, Lana Del Rey, Jack White and even Beyoncé. It sounds like an eclectic mix of styles, all united under the decadent splendor of the jazz age. Who could resist! For a teaser of things to come, you can check out “$100 Bill” here, or watch the "Gatsby" trailer below.

Various Artists - 'Dermot O'Leary Presents The Saturday Sessions 2013' Album Review

Dermot O'Leary's Saturday Sessions Allbum Review

Using a tried-and-tested formula of acoustic versions and covers, this most recent instalment of the series sees further performances for Dermot O'Leary's radio show now available to own.  The artists included cover a broad spectrum, from near-unknowns to arena fillers, and predictably results vary from the terrific to the terrible.

A brave and successful take on 'Eleanor Rigby' from Emeli Sande begins proceedings, while Will Young reminds us of his vocal talent on a lovely rendition of Blondie's 'Hanging On The Telephone'.  The classic Jackson 5 number 'I Want You Back' loses its magic in the hands (or should that be voice?) of Rachel Sermanni, but the running is immediately rescued by The Do taking on Kings Of Leon's 'Sex On Fire'.  They morph the rock anthem into a chill-out moment and in vocalist Olivia Merilahti have a fantastic talent.  Of those presenting their own material, Florence + The Machine and Jessie J give solid presentations of 'Never Let Me Go' and 'Price Tag' respectively, while Robbie Williams' altered performance of 'Candy' does well to take it away from sounding like an advertising jingle and make it a folk-style sing-a-long.

An ill-advised attempt at Blur's 'Song 2' from Plan B begins the second disc in horrendous manner, something that becomes all the more surprising once you hear the beautifully soulful version of 'Empire State Of Mind' gifted by Maverick Sabre.  Miles Kane gives a decent rendition of The 'Stones 'Play With Fire' before Dry The River provide a highlight of this release with a lovely cover of 'Homeward Bound', originally by Simon & Garfunkel.  A trio of British bands close out this record and, for an act with such a fierce live reputation, Kasabian's 'Days Are Forgotten' is limp to say the least.  By contrast, the Manic Street Preachers bring a raucous 'Your Love Alone Is Not Enough' and Athlete provide a stirring 'Wires' - a worthy selection as the latter book-end.

55th Grammys Preview: 'Music's Biggest Night' Wont Fail To Impress

Grammy Awards Beyonce Knowles Prince Taylor Swift Maroon 5 Kelly Clarkson Florence and the Machine Frank Ocean Alicia Keys Elton John Ed Sheeran Bruno Mars Sting Jennifer Lopez Rihanna Justin Timberlake Justin Bieber Mumford And Sons Fun Black Keys Jack White

Annually, the Grammys is one of the biggest events for music across America and in Europe. In fact, it has dubbed itself 'music's biggest night'. Celebrating the best in pop, hiphop, soul, R&B and much of what comes in between, it never fails to be a veritable who's who from the Spotify playlists of the masses. And this year will be no different. Not only are the nominees ones to look out for, absences are worthy of note, as are this year's presenters and some very special performances.

As Yahoo report, this year's presenters include Grammy royalty, Prince, Beyonce, and Jennifer Lopez, all of whom have been nominated or won Grammys before.

In terms of performances to look forward to, this year we have some unusual and largely unexpected pair ups. Elton John and Ed Sheeran will take to the stage together. An unusual pairing, they're both Brits with unusual song writing talent. While John is a true showman and is well known for his intereSting outfits and outrageous glasses, Sheeran is distinctly more low key. We're not sure how this is going to work, but we're guessing it'll be great. Bruno Mars, Sting and Rihanna will all also perform together, as will Alicia Keys and Maroon 5, and Dierks Bentley and Miranda Lambert.

Florence Welch Gives Kendrick Lamar Fans A Treat With Impromptu Tube Performance

Florence and the Machine Florence Welch Kendrick Lamar

Fans travelling home from Kendrick Lamar’s London show recently were given a bonus extra performance after they found themselves sharing a London Underground carriage with Florence Welch!

Welch had been spotted at the show beforehand on Sunday night (January 20, 2013), but opted to take the tube instead of a private car. Keeping a low profile was never going to work with that shock of red hair, and she soon found herself being serenaded by a bunch of fans singing her hit ‘You’ve Got The Love.’ However, rather than shy away, Welch opted to play up to the crowd: “Florence jumped on the Tube after Kendrick and, as you can imagine, every carriage was packed” a source told The Sun. “At first she tried to keep a low profile but it didn’t take long for a few people to recognise her. They started singing 'You’ve Got The Love' but instead of bailing at the next stop, Florence joined in. It was brilliant.”

Welch wasn’t done there either, as if we didn’t already know that she was a fan of Lamar, she moved onto one of his tunes next; “She finished You’ve Got The Love before changing to the Kendrick Lamar song Backseat Freestyle” the insider said. Welch is a known fan of hip-hop, and can count A$AP Rocky and Drake among her pals.

Is The Cat Out Of The Bag? Rolling Stones To Headline Coachella Festival 2013?

Rolling Stones Lady GaGa Mick Jagger Mary J Blige Florence Welch Florence and the Machine

Are The Rolling Stones lined up to headline Coachella Festival in 2013?

It looks as though the people that make the band’s official iPhone app may have just secretly leaked details of their plans for 2013. On Friday (December 14, 2012), the band’s app had details of a performance on April 12, 2013, at Indio, at the Coachella Festival, NME reports. Although the date was later removed, in the age of the screen grab, there’s no stopping news like that form going viral.

The last time the band performed at a festival was back in 2007, when they played at the Isle of Wight Festival and the fans of the band who have a ticket for Glastonbury Festival 2013 will probably still be holding out hope that Jagger & co. will still be announced as one of the UK festival’s main acts, too.
