Remember when Frank Ocean was a thing? Well, it’s been a hot minute since the soulful singer/songwriter released a new track, but today was the day. Ocean has been artistically reclusive for two years or so, working on new material, This weekend, he released Memrise, his first solo effort in a few years.

Frank Ocean
Frank Ocean owns your soul from now until the album drops.

It’s pretty lo-fi stuff, but there’s a lot of production going on. The instrumental is pretty big for a Frank Ocean track and it’s clear he’s been experimenting with a new sound. Intentionally or not, the song has a vinyl kind of sound and a it sounds very ambient – the kind of thing you’d use as background music for a very arty short film. Probably one set in Atlanta.

But I digress. As far as Ocean’s ever evolving sound goes, Memrise bodes well – the next album is going to be very, very different, but the one thing we fell in love with during the Swim Good days –  Frank Ocean’s swoon-worthy vocals – are there in full force.

What more could a fan want really? Well, an album title and release date would be pretty cool, but it sounds like this one is still a work in progress. Meanwhile, we can probably expect more exciting collaborations and listen to Pyramids on repeat.
