The very long-awaited return of Frank Ocean has taken another tantalising and frustrating turn, with the singer hosting a mysterious live stream on the day after he missed his self-imposed July deadline for the release of his new album Boys Don’t Cry.

Hosted on a specially designed site boysdontcry.co that only seems to work on Safari browsers or on mobiles, a stream appeared at about 8:30am (GMT) on Monday (August 1st) showing an empty warehouse in black and white with desks and equipment lined up against the back wall.

As of the time of writing, it shows a man (possibly Ocean himself) cutting and assembling wood in front of the equipment as snippets of background music play – which could easily be short excerpts of his new album. The Apple Music logo is in the top-right corner of the stream.

28 year old Ocean’s last studio album, Channel Orange, was released four years ago last month, was both critically acclaimed and immensely popular, hitting the #2 spot on both sides of the Atlantic and named as the best album of 2012 by many music publications.

The story of Boys Don’t Cry goes way back to February 2013, when Ocean confirmed he had begun work with Pharrell Williams, producer Danger Mouse and Tyler, The Creator on another concept album. In July 2015 he intimated that the completed album would be out that month, but it failed to materialise.

In March this year there were rumours of a listening party in New York, shortly after which SoundCloud and Instagram clips were taken down from the internet, fuelling speculation that they had contained new music from the singer.

Early last month, an image of an overdue library card on Ocean’s Tumblr suggested that Boys Don’t Cry would, after four years of waiting, come out by the end of the month. However, as of yesterday, he has missed that target, with nothing except a Calvin Klein ad to his name.
