Actress Gabrielle Union Worries She Has Been Left "Barren" As "Penance" For Choosing To Pursue Her Career Instead Of Starting A Family At A Younger Age.
The Bad Boys II beauty, 42, reveals she and her husband of one year, basketball ace Dwyane Wade, are trying for a baby, but she fears her chances of falling pregnant naturally are fast disappearing.
She tells Redbook magazine, "So far, it has not happened for us. A lot of my friends deal with this. There's a certain amount of shame that is placed on women who have perhaps chosen a career over starting a family younger. The penance for being a career woman is barrenness."
And Union admits conceiving a child is just the first in a long line of challenges for many working mums.
She says, "The reality is that women are discriminated against in the workplace for being mothers. As much as there are strides being made - you get pregnant, your career takes a hit. You can't have a bad day. Don't you dare cry at work. Don't raise your voice. Especially if you're a black woman in corporate America - now you're 'the angry black woman'."
Wade, 33, already has a brood of his own - he has custody of his two sons, Zaire and Zion, from his first marriage to high school sweetheart Siohvaughn Funches, while he raises his nephew, Dahveon, too. The Miami Heat star also welcomed baby boy Xavier in 2013 following a fling during a brief split from Union.
