'Wonder Woman' Flies Past $300 Million At US Box Office

Gal Gadot

Patty Jenkins can rest assured that she's done a fantastic job in the Director's Chair for the latest DC Extended Universe movie release, 'Wonder Woman', as the Gal Gadot-led film has now topped $300 million in the US box office alone. It's an incredible score for the Amazonian Princess' first big screen solo flick, which took in $223 million globally across its opening weekend alone, marking the best opening weekend of all-time for a female director.

Whilst 'Cars 3' snuck past the film in North America last weekend, the movie still picked up enough money to take it past the $300 million mark this week, with 'Wonder Woman' making $7.3 million on Friday alone to storm past the incredible milestone. When ticket sales come in later today for the rest of the weekend, the film is expected to be closer to the $320 million mark.

Gal Gadot's Paycheque For 'Wonder Woman' Is (Un)Surprisingly Low

Gal Gadot

Much has been (rightly) made of the runaway success of current box office smash Wonder Woman over the last couple of weeks, having made more than $500 million in the U.S. and on the verge of becoming one of the ten highest-grossing superhero movies of all time. Not to mention its symbolic significance in representing a breakthrough for women at the highest echelons of the film industry.

Making it all the more surprising then, that its lead star Gal Gadot was paid a comparatively paltry sum of $300,000 – and adding new fuel to the debate over the gender pay gap in Hollywood as a result.

'Wonder Woman' Makes History For Female Directors

Patty Jenkins Gal Gadot

It was only appropriate that a superhero movie as empowering as 'Wonder Woman' would be directed by a woman, and now Patty Jenkins has managed to make history with her film having the largest opening weekend ever for a female director. It's an important moment for feminism in the media.

'Wonder Woman' flew effortlessly to the top of the box office over the weekend and grossed $100.5 million in domestic ticket sales. It easily beat the previous record holder, 'Fifty Shades of Grey' directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, which earned a comparatively meagre $85.2 million in its opening weekend.

Gal Gadot On The Importance Of A Relatable 'Wonder Woman'

Gal Gadot

To-date, fans of DC's Extended Universe have been given Superman-centric film 'Man Of Steel', which was followed up with 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' and the villain-focused third entry, 'Suicide Squad'. Though none of the three made a great mark with the critics, they still made big bucks in the box office, with 'Wonder Woman' now set to land as the fourth instalment.

Early reactions from those who have been lucky enough to see screenings ahead of official release have been great, with Gadot's performance and director Patty Jenkins' work at the helm especially earning a brilliant response. But what will we see of the character in the flick? Will she be evolved from the colder Wonder Woman we saw in 'Batman v Superman', who was close to giving up on humanity?

Patty Jenkins directs the flick, as we first go through an Amazonian origin story for the superhero before moving into the First World War and finally, a modern day adventure that could serve to set up the events that will take place in this year's 'Justice League' film. Split into three wholly-different acts, the movie's sure to tick a lot of boxes for those watching.

The fate of Superman is unclear but given the end of Batman Vs. Superman it's presumed that Superman will return to life albeit potentially temporarily weakened.

The Justice League is DC Comics’ superhero team and it’s thought that a supervillain called Steppenwolf will be their main target – though it’s sure that Lex Luthor will appear and cause as much trouble as he possibly can.

Criminal Review

Excellent

Almost criminally entertaining, this preposterous thriller mixes buckets of humour and emotion into the violent, twisty action. And Kevin Costner gets his best role in years, a remarkably complex character who's unpredictable and thoroughly engaging. So even as the story grows increasingly ridiculous, the film remains both gripping and a lot of fun.

It's set in London, where hot CIA operative Bill (Ryan Reynolds) is on the trail of an evil anarchist (Jordi Molla) when he's captured, tortured and killed. To stop an imminent attack, the CIA chief Wells (Gary Oldman) needs to know what Bill was working on. So he calls in scientist Franks (Tommy Lee Jones), who has been experimenting with transferring memories from brain to brain in animals. For his first human trial, he copies Bill's dying memories into the only suitable brain available on such short notice: psycho killer Jericho (Kevin Costner), who's serving a death sentence in prison. And now Jericho is desperate to sort out the chaos in his head.

Director Ariel Vromen (The Iceman) keeps everything moving so briskly that there isn't time to stop and think about how silly the premise is. All of these characters act on their basest impulses, never thinking through anything before they charge into the next situation. Viewers who try to make sense of the plot, or of London's geography, will find their brains aching like Jericho's. So it's better to just hang on and enjoy the ride. The film's edgy, urgent tone adds the illusion of depth amid the mindlessly brutal violence, while the formidable cast adds weight to a variety of rather thinly drawn characters, from Oldman's bluster to Jones' wry wit. Only Costner gets some real depth to play with, and Jericho is constantly surprising, mixing a killer instinct with brainy invention and some properly dark emotions. His scenes with Gal Gadot (as Bill's wife) are unnervingly tense and moving.

Gal Gadot Talks Female Empowerment In 'Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice'

Gal Gadot

Gal Gadot stars as Wonder Woman in her first live action embodiment since the 70s when she was portrayed by Lynda Carter. 'Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice' sees two uber-macho superheroes go head to head, but their rivalry is disrupted by the arrival of a much wiser peer in the form of centuries-old Diana Prince.

Gal Gadot as Wonder WomanGal Gadot plays Wonder Woman aka Diana Prince

We're hardly new to the idea of a strong female superhero in cinema. There's been at least ten in the 'X-Men' franchise, then you've got Gamora in 'Guardians of the Galaxy', Catwoman in 'Batman' and Black Widow in 'The Avengers', but there's still a lot more room for oestrogen in the comic-to-film world and its incredible that it's taken until now to re-boot the Amazonian princess Wonder Woman.

'Batman V Superman' May Have Smashed The Box Office, But It Hasn't Convinced Critics

Zack Snyder Ben Affleck Henry Cavill Gal Gadot

Probably the most highly anticipated film of the year, 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' predictably stormed the box office with $170.1 million domestic ticket sales and $424.1m global. That's easily superseding critically acclaimed hits like 'Zootopia' and '10 Cloverfield Lane', and yet it continues to be viciously attacked by critics.

Batman v SupermanIt's Batman VS. Superman VS. the critics

As it stands, 'Batman v Superman' starring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill is at just 28% on Rotten Tomatoes, actually dropping from 29% in just a day. Both would-be fans and film reviewers were left feeling more than a little disappointed at the distinct lack of any humour, the controversial ending and a lot of over-the-top production. Our own critics, Rich Cline, explained that the main issue lay in the theatrics. 'The problem is that the film is so big and loud that it can't help but feel bloated, especially since so much of what's on screen feels rather vacuous', he said.

Before 'Batman V Superman', Wonder Woman's Difficult Journey To The Big Screen

Gal Gadot Zack Snyder George Miller Joss Whedon Megan Gale

Both Batman and Superman have seen various incarnations on the big screen, but in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice they will be joined by a superhero whose film debut is long overdue, Wonder Woman. The story of Wonder Woman’s journey to the big screen could be a movie in itself, as until now writers, directors and studios have tried and failed to make the heroine leap from comic books to film.

Wonder Woman’s live-action debut came in a 1974 TV movie starring Cathy Lee Crosby, but she wasn’t quite as comic book fans had expected. This Wonder Woman was blonde and had a very questionable costume, which featured some blue leggings and a red coat with blue and white starred sleeves.

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice Review

Good

After 2013's beefy Man of Steel, director Zack Snyder goes even bigger and darker with this sequel, cross-pollenating Clark Kent's story with flashbacks to the origins of Bruce Wayne and his Dark Knight alter-ego. The problem is that the film is so big and loud that it can't help but feel bloated, especially since so much of what's on screen feels rather vacuous. But it looks amazing and is relentlessly gripping.

After a Bat-origin prologue, the story kicks off with the climactic battle from Man of Steel as seen from the perspective of Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck), watching his city being destroyed by Superman (Henry Cavill). This further fuels the rage that began when his parents were murdered. And that fire is stoked by the mischievous millionaire Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg). Meanwhile, Superman/Clark is struggling with how the world is revering him as a god, which is straining his relationship with intrepid reporter Lois (Amy Adams). As these very different vigilante heros head toward a climactic confrontation, Luthor is up to something seriously nefarious. And the ensuing chaos brings another hero into the open, Wonder Woman Diana Prince (Gal Gadot).

While the various plot threads are fascinating, and Snyder maintains a snappy pace, the overall story centres on the fact that Affleck's prickly, bitter Bruce is easily manipulated into doing terrible things, which makes him rather unlikeable. And Cavill's fundamentally good Clark isn't much easier to identify with. Both are also oddly constrained by their costumes and bulked-up physicalities, which leave them unable to move properly. This allows the side characters to steal the show: Adams adds emotion and passion, Eisenberg provides the nutty nastiness, Irons is hilariously cynical as Bruce's butler Alfred, and Fishburne is all bluster as Lois' editor. But in the end, the film belongs to the gorgeous, clear-headed Gadot, instantly making her stand-alone movie the most anticipated superhero project on the horizon.

Triple 9 Review

Good

After a post-apocalyptic dystopia (The Road) and Prohibition-era America (Lawless), Australian director John Hillcoat brings his edgy Wild West sensibilities to this gritty present-day heist thriller. The film is fierce and stylish, and utterly gripping even though there's the nagging sensation that nothing is happening under the surface. Thankfully, the actors add plenty of terrific texture to their characters.

It's set in Atlanta, where Terrell (Chiwetel Ejiofor) leads his crew of thugs (Anthony Mackie, Clifton Collins Jr., Aaron Paul and Norman Reedus) through a riotously dangerous bank robbery. They're working for the cold-hearted Russian mobster Irina (Kate Winslet), who demands an even bigger heist before she'll pay them. Terrell has a child with Irina, so feels like he has little choice in the matter, but his team is made up of unstable hotheads and corrupt cops who have their own opinions. One of the cops also has a new partner in Chris (Casey Affleck), a tenacious good guy who's the nephew of a cynical detective (Woody Harrelson) who's just beginning to crack this case. So the gang decides to distract the city's police force with a triple 9, code for a downed officer, while they carry out their next elaborate robbery. The question is who will take the bullet.

Matt Cook's script is a bundle of mad twists and turns, usually the result of impulsive gang members who act without thinking. The tension is very high, as each person's morality is warped at every turn. All while Chris tries to remain upright in the middle of a storm he doesn't quite understand. Each character is up against a wall, ready to do whatever it takes to survive in a situation that is getting increasingly out of control. And without more subtext, or at least a sense of these people's back-stories, no one on-screen is very likeable.

Next year is taking comic books to a new level. No longer are the lines between heroes and villains solid. Now we're seeing a new side to our favourite caped crusaders; Marvel's Captain America may be bringing about a civil war, but that's nothing compared to the battle between DC's Batman and Superman in 'Dawn Of Justice'.

Henry Cavill in Batman vs SupermanHenry Cavill reprises his role as Clark Kent

The new trailer sees an evermore intensifying hostility between the two vigilantes: on the one side you've got a billionaire human being named Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) who's disillusioned with what Gotham City has become and determined to fight crime in his own way, and on the other you've got an alien journalist named Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) with supernatural powers who's rather more modest when it comes to his own crime-fighting practices.

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice - Official Trailer

What happens when two superheroes with vastly differing opinions come head to head? Well, not very well if Lex Luthor has anything to do with it. Superman believes Batman is a vigilante and the civil liberties of the people of Gotham are 'being trampled on' whilst Batman feels Superman's abilities are blown out of proportion by the media and is far from a fan of his superhero outfit.

Lex Luthor has enough power to manipulate this situation to his benefit and pitches both heroes against one another - Son of Krypton versus Bat of Gotham however, when his plan doesn't go exactly to plan he creates a monster to destroy both men - on the verge of destruction, Batman and Superman are joined by Wonder Woman, Aquaman and other superheroes on their quest to save their city from destruction.

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice is directed by Zack Snyder and it's a precursor to The Justice League films - which are also written and directed by Snyder.

When a powerful member of the Russian mafia learns of Tompkins' money making ways, she blackmails him and his team into pulling a heist for her. Fearing they'll be exposed, the gang carry out the job for Irene, a woman who might look glamourous but has a dark soul. Once the job's complete, the crew believe they're in the clear but savvy Sergeant Detective Jeffrey Allen has been put on the case and he soon discovers that there's probably more to the robbery than first thought.

That's not the only problem facing Tompkins, Irene tracks the cop down and requests another job - if refused Irene won't hesitate in taking their lives. This job is far bigger than the last and is an almost impossible mission. Feeling their only option is to distract all the cops in their district, the team come up with a plan to pull a Triple 9 call - police code for 'officer down'. However, with Sergeant Detective Allen constantly uncovering more information and being faced with the ordeal of killing one of their own, the job will be far from straight forward.

Triple 9 is directed by John Hillcoat who also directed 2012's Lawless starring Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy & the film adaptation of The Road starring Viggo Mortensen.

Ben Affleck's Batman Unveiled: Ok, Now We're Excited

Ben Affleck Henry Cavill Zack Snyder Jesse Eisenberg Gal Gadot

Last night we caught our first glimpse of Ben Affleck in his new role as Batman ready to appear in Zack Snyder's action sequel alongside Henry Cavill's Superman. Following a long line of caped crusaders, Affleck doesn't push boundaries in his new get-up though he does look extremely cool.

The First Teaser Image Has Been Released Showing Ben Affleck As Batman.

The new snap shows Affleck clad as Batman entirely in black with the obligatory pointy-eared cowl, flowing black cloak and muscle armour. He is posed next to his formidable batmobile which looks otherworldly with its matte black finish, chunky tyres, tiny windows and jagged edges. The image is steeped in atmosphere - Adam West this is surely not - as Batman faces up to the challenge of reigning in the crime-stricken Gotham.

In Another Surprise Move, Jesse Eisenberg Gets Cast As Lex Luthor In 2016 Batman Vs Superman Flick

Jesse Eisenberg Jeremy Irons Ben Affleck Gal Gadot

Jesse Eisenberg has been cast as Lex Luthor in Warner Bros’ upcoming Batman vs. Superman. We’ll give you a minute to recover from the news. This comes as another surprising decision in the franchise, after Ben Affleck was announced as Batman to widespread uproar from fans last year. The news was first reported by Deadline from a press release by Warner.

Jesse Eisenberg, BFI
Say hello to your new Lex Luthor.

"Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman's rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940. What's great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He's a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions," director Zack Snyder said in a statement.

Bieber Banged Up For Druggy Drag Racing: Justin Bieber has just had the mother of all terrible fortnights. The recalcitrant popstar was under investigation for a vicious egg attack on his neighbor's home by police who discovered drugs upon raiding Bieber's abode. The 'Baby' singer headed snowboarding with his equally rebellious chums with the threat of deportment looming. The singer was then arrested yesterday for DUI and drag racing in Miami.

Bieber showed what a true hard-ass he really was when police stopped him and he immediately snitched on himself, saying he was drunk and high on weed and prescription medication. The 19 year-old was released from a Miami jail an hour after a Miami judge, set a "standard" $2,500 bond Thursday afternoon. The widely-circulated mugshot shows the fallen star grinning ear-to-ear in his orange prison v-neck, prompting Seth Rogen to brand him "a piece of s**t."

Fast & Furious 6 Review

Good

The most impressive thing about the sixth entry into this noisy franchise is that it's both more preposterous and more self-important than ever before. Which is no mean feat. The cast and crew clearly went for something bigger and more explosive, but by removing their tongues from their cheeks they leave us laughing at them rather than with them. Even so, some of the crazed action scenes are breathtaking.

The story picks up right where the last one ended: Dominic and Brian (Diesel and Walker) have taken the fortune they grabbed in Rio and started an idyllic life in the Canary Islands. Brian and Dom's sister Mia (Brewster) have even produced an adorable baby. Then US Agent Hobbs (Johnson) appears asking for their help in capturing the villainous Shaw (Evans), who is collecting military technological gadgets for some nefarious purpose. And they agree to go along because Dom's presumed-dead girlfriend Letty (Rodriguez) is working with him. So they reassemble the team (Pataky, Gibson, Bridges, Kang, Gadot and Carano) and get started in London.

Yes, this chapter takes place in Europe, which gives the filmmakers new landmarks to race past in their elaborately orchestrated chase sequences, throwing cars like toys at every plate-glass window in sight. The first night-time set-piece in London is fairly incoherent (and nonsensical), but things get better from there, with a whizzy bit of competitive driving for Dom and Letty and a few other showdowns before the action moves to Spain for a couple of massive, gob-smacking action sequences that would boggle the mind if we thought for a second that they were even marginally possible.

Elsa Pataky, Gal Gadot & Sung Kang - Fast & Furious 6 Video Interview

Video Interview with Elsa Pataky, Gal Gadot & Sung Kang

Elsa Pataky, Sung Kang and Gal Gadot are interviewed in London about their new movie 'Fast & Furious 6'. They discuss returning to the new movie, Elsa's character Elena's relationship with Vin Diesel's character Dom and Gal's new action sequences.

Sung says he feels bittersweet because he is now leaving the franchise. 'You do meet friends and they become family in a way after four movies and then you say farewell. but on to bigger, better things for all of us', he says. On Elena ending her relationship with Dom, Elsa admits she felt sad about it, saying, 'You're never expecting that that would happen and it's a tough but very wise decision, I think she's mature enough to understand and know that she has to let him go.' Gal reveals her insistence to director Justin Lin that she get involved in stuntwork. 'After we shot the fifth one I told him, 'Listen, if I'm gonna do the sixth one, I really wanna do all the stunts by myself' and Justin. made it happen and I loved it', she said.

Dom, Brian and Mia may be living it up with $100 million dollars in their back pockets, but living the fast life hasn't been entirely beneficial as a hole in the lives has been left by the fact that they cannot return home after the trouble they got in with the law. When DSS agent Luke Hobbs approaches Dom to ask for his help nabbing a gang of highly-trained drivers who are leaving a trail of destruction everywhere they go, Dom is less than tempted by the offer. However, when Hobbs shows him a week old photograph of Dom's former love Letty who he thought was dead, he takes on the job with his friends, determined to find out the truth even if it's the last thing he wants to hear. In return for the capture of this gang of road miscreants, the trio are offered a full pardon for their own crimes. However, with the stakes this high, survival becomes the most sought after prize for their latest challenge.

Dominic, Brian and Mia maybe $100 million richer following their daring heist at the expense of crime lord Hernan Reyes in Rio de Janeiro, but their lives have been left somewhat ruptured by the fact that they cannot return home despite DSS agent Luke Hobbs letting them go after they saved his life. However, they are given a chance to be pardoned in full when Hobbs enlists them and their team to help him take down a group of deadly mercenary drivers with their own formidable street racing skills. Things aren't as simple as that though, especially when Dom discovers that his former love Letty who he believed to be dead makes a return as the brutal and self-serving assistant of the criminal kingpin behind the organisation. Will the Fast and Furious team succeed in the dangerous mission with their lives and their chance to go home hanging in the balance?

Following the events of the Fast franchise's fifth instalment 'Fast Five', our favourite street racers are back with the upcoming 'Fast & Furious 6'. With a full all-star cast return, the movie looks set to be a hit following the trailer's debut at the Super Bowl XLVII. It has been directed by Justin Lin ('Annapolis') and written by Chris Morgan ('Cellular', 'Wanted') of the last three instalments and is scheduled to be released in the UK on May 24th 2013.

Fast & Furious Review

Bad
Doing its best to further erase whatever pleasant memories (guilty or no) people may still have had from the 2001 original, Fast & Furious reunites The Fast and the Furious cast with much ballyhoo, only to kill one of them off in no time flat and leave viewers fairly unconcerned with what happens to the rest of them. Given that this third sequel is intent on treating the events of the origin film as some sort of holy text, this is probably not the effect that the filmmakers were going for.

For the record, Rob Cohen's The Fast and the Furious -- which took the name from a 1955 Roger Corman racing flick, and updated the master's exploitation bent with well-deployed studio gloss -- was a perfectly enjoyable piece of work. Throwing squadrons of neon-colored muscle cars and a still-trying Vin Diesel into the middle of an overheated potboiler drama about family honor and loyalty turned out to be a genius stroke; the thing left scorch marks. It moved with the skillful speed of well-honed pulp. By contrast, the near-laughable Fast & Furious (directed by Justin Lin, who did the honors on the last installment, Tokyo Drift) tries far too hard and achieves very little.
