Country: Portraits Of An American Sound Trailer

Country music has long been associated as a storytelling journey, but the evolution of the country sound has been made most obvious not by the music but by the image. There was a time when arenas would sparkle from all the rhinestones and when stetsons were a must-have. Then Johnny Cash brought his man in black phase into the mix, and with it a rebellion that few had seen before amongst those of that genre. Pretty soon it was all about carving out your own niche, fixing your own trademark look; whether it was Kenny Rogers and his white three-piece suits, or Tanya Tucker with her 'badgirl' catsuits and tight pants. Pictures from the mutation of country music throughout the last eight decades are perhaps some of the most telling because something about the looks of these country stars had as much of an impact as the music itself.

Garth Brook Fans In Dublin Will Be Refunded For Cancelled Concerts, But May Still Lose Some Expenses

Garth Brooks

The five sold-out concerts, which Garth Brooks was scheduled to play in Dublin through the end of July have all been cancelled. Arrangement for ticket refunds are to be announced later today (Wednesday, July 9). The reason given for the cancellations was that Dublin City Council would not grant permission for all concerts. The Council only approved three of the gigs that Brooks was initially going to play between 25 and 29 July at Croke Park. Following the disagreement, Brooks’ management claimed that it had exhausted all avenues in reaching out to the Council, with the country star insisting that he would play either “all or none” of the planned concerts.

Garth Brooks
For the love of music? Brooks refused to play less than the five gigs he had originally planned.

According to the BBC, Brooks reacted by saying that asking which concerts to play and which to cancel would be "like asking to choose one child over another". Clearly the man takes his job pretty seriously.

All Garth Brooks Dublin Concerts Cancelled After Licensing Hoo-Hah

Garth Brooks

All five of the Garth Brooks live concerts scheduled for the end of the month have been cancelled after an agreement between promoters and Dublin City Council could not be reached. The US country star had five consecutive sold out concerts planned at the Croke Park arena from the 25-29th July but the Irish city would only permit three of the five to be staged.

The city council put its foot down on five concerts amidst fears of noise pollution and anti-social behaviour, but offered to compromise with three.

However, Brooks took a hard-line against the ruling, saying "For us, it is five shows or none at all. To choose which shows to do and which shows not to do, would be like asking to choose one child over another. However this plays out, Ireland has my heart and always will."

Garth Brooks Debacle Rumbles On As Dublin Faces Backlash Over Croke Park Ruling

Garth Brooks

Last night, Garth Brooks told the 400,000 people who have bought tickets for his Irish concerts that he will play five shows in Dublin or none at all. The country and western singer had scheduled five shows at Croke Park at the end of July to kick of his international tour but the city council refused to issue licences for two of those five concerts.

The council has refused permission for concerts on the 28th and 29th July due to fears of noise, traffic disruption, illegal parking and "potential antisocial behaviour." The stadium's capacity of 80,000 fans per night means about 160,000 will be affected.

Instead of accepting the three shows as a compromise, the US performer has asserted that he'll only play the full five. "For us, it is five shows or none at all," Brooks said in a statement. "To choose which shows to do and which shows not to do, would be like asking to choose one child over another. However this plays out, Ireland has my heart and always will."

Renee Fleming Announced For Super Bowl 2014: A Look Back On Some Of The Great Anthem Singers Through The Years

Renee Fleming Aretha Franklin Garth Brooks Beyonce Knowles Jennifer Hudson Christina Aguilera

Opera soprano Renee Fleming has been announced to sing the “Star-Spangled Banner” at the NFL Super Bowl XLVIII in MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., on Feb. 2. Fleming’s appointment is a pretty big deal, considering that the Super Bowl is easily the most watched television event of the year in the US. Last year, 111 million people nationwide tuned into the game, the infamous Super Bowl ads and, of course, the half time show. Fleming is also a bit of an unusual choice, given that the anthem has been performed by mainstream pop stars every year for the past decade.

Renee Fleming
When it comes to performing live, Fleming is a trusted veteran.

Some of the performances have been stunning and unforgettable, like Aretha Franklin’s 2006 rendition, while others, like Christina Aguilera’s 2011 blunder might be better left forgotten. Hopefully, this year’s anthem performance will have patriots in tears (the good kind), but if not, there are always these historical renditions to look back on fondly.

Everyone in Hollywood seems to be in high spirits this week, especially Garth Brooks, who used his appearance on The Ellen Show yesterday (Friday) to talk about his marital harmony with Trisha Yearwood. The two recently recorded a remake of “After the Fire Is Gone” – rather unfitting for their own relationship.

Nashville Pays Its Respects To The Late George Jones With Star-Studded Concert

George Jones GEORGE STRAIT Kid Rock Garth Brooks MEGADETH

The late, great George Jones was honored this Friday at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena Friday. The night was originally intended to celebrate the country icon’s retirement, but after his death last April, it was held as a sort of posthumous tribute. Billed as 'Playin' Possum: The Final No-Show,' the sold-out concert featured acts ranging from Garth Brooks and GEORGE STRAIT to Kid Rock and MEGADETH, USA Today reports.

George Jones
The late George Jones defined the face of country music for most of the 20th century.

"During the funeral, we mourned George; tonight we celebrate," former Grand Ole Opry announcer Keith Bilbrey told the crowd at the start of the show. The performances ran on for over four hours, in order to accommodate the 112 artists, performing in memory of Jones. "Talk about wrangling cats!" Co-host Charlie Chase quipped early on in the show. "Everybody I've talked to says they're going on early," Dierks Bentley said backstage.

CMA And Country Stars Present A Tearful Taylor Swift With The Pinnacle Award

Taylor Swift Garth Brooks GEORGE STRAIT Faith Hill Tim Mcgraw Brad Paisley Rascal Flatts

Last night’s CMAs were definitely surprising in more ways than one – it was a rookies’ night through and through, with first time winners dominating the list, for starters. More than that though, let’s talk about the fate of one emotional blonde lady in particular: Taylor Swift, who surprised everyone by… not winning. We’re as surprised as you are, but everyone’s favorite country girl went somewhat overlooked by the Country Music Association.

Taylor Swift, CMA Awards
Swift accepted the award in a gorgeous red gown.

Well, that’s not entirely true. Of course Swift received a huge honor when she was announced as the second ever laureate of the Pinnacle award, which is arguably the highest honor bestowed by the Country Music Association, especially considering that Swift is only 23 and just on her fourth studio album. Considering that the only other winner of the Pinnacle Award has been Garth Brooks in 2005… well, you get the picture. It’s a pretty big deal.

The CMAs Honor Nominee Favorite Taylor Swift With Special Pinnacle Award

Taylor Swift Garth Brooks Tim Mcgraw Blake Shelton

Taylor Swift and the CMAs – it’s a match made in heaven and one that continues to reap accolades for the young singer. Ahead of tonight’s show, Swift is up for six whole awards. And while she is a favorite to win big (yet again) Taylor also has one in the bag already. The Country Music Association has decided to also honor the singer with the Pinnacle Award for her success, E! News reports. The world may change, but it's reassuring to know that the Country Music Awards still belong to Swift. There can be little argument about that.

The Pinnacle Award is a special distinction, given to artists, who have achieved international success and recognition, as well as record sales of country music. Since country is usually quite a region-specific genre, the award is a very rare honor, given to only the most successful of performers. To give you a bit of perspective, the only other Pinnacle Award laureate is Garth Brooks, after the award was created in 2005. So it's all very exciting for the young singer, who has achieved unparalleled success with her most recent album, RED, and the subsequent sold out tour.

Besides the distinction, Taylor is also nominated for Entertainer, Female Vocalist, Album, Song, Music Video, Musician and Musical Event of the Year, with the song, video and event nominations being for her work on the Tim Mcgraw song Highway Don’t Care. Blake Shelton is the other favorite, with five nominees. The awards will be broadcast tonight at 6pm PST on ABC.

"It may sound cliché, but I would not be here without Garth Brooks," said Tulsan Bob Partridge, 29. "That said, it's a great thing they're doing here and hopefully, they raise a ton of money. We don't want this concert to have to happen - we come here with a heavy heart."

Garth Brooks Will Appear At Oklahoma Hurricane Relief Concert

Garth Brooks Toby Keith Willie Nelson

Garth Brooks has agreed to join the bill for the Oklahoma Benefit Concert, a bill that already includes the likes of fellow country stars Toby Keith and Willie Nelson to name but two. The performance will aim to raise money for those worse hit by the natural disaster and will take place July 6 at the University of Oklahoma’s Gaylord Family Stadium at Owen Field.

Keith is organising much of the one-day festival and is an Oklahoma-native himself, growing up in the city of Moore, which was badly damaged by a twister. He told Tulsa World on Thursday; “Once we got the news that the tornado had hit Toby’s hometown, Miss Yearwood and I told Toby we were at his service for whatever he chose to do … I am amazed at the human spirit the tornado victims have shown. I am humbled by the giving of the volunteers. It is an honor to get to be a part of this healing process."

Brooks is the latest addition to a line-up that features Keith, Nelson, Trisha Yearwood and Ronnie Dunn, with more possibly to come. Tickets will go on sale for the event on June 21, each costing $35. The money raised from the benefit will go towards helping the United Way of Central Oklahoma May Tornadoes Relief Fund.

Garth Brooks Enters Country Music Hall Of Fame.

Garth Brooks

Garth Brooks is no stranger to praise, success and the reception of awards, but entering the Country Music Hall of Fame, still managed to reduce the man to tears of joy. Connie Smith and Hargus "Pig" Robbins also received awards at the event last night (21st Oct 2012) in Nashville.

Tears began to roll before Brook was even inside the building, the Huffington Post reports that he began tearing up while speaking to the press on the red carpet. In his speech Brooks remained humble. "I look at it as a continuation of trying to make country music as proud of you as you always have. You represent it the best that you can. And the only difference in our life now is that [my wife] has to say 'Hall of Famer' before she calls my name any time." Which she says she wont do. He said, "I don't feel any different, but we should talk tomorrow."

Country legend George Straight told Brooks; "You've brought so many fans to our music; it helped all of us." And Bob Seger said "What I love about Garth is his passion -- he's never afraid to be passionate, [and throughout his success] he's still a really good guy, he wears it well," USA Today reports.
