The Take That singer admitted on Twitter to being extremely disappointed after another one of his contestants left the talent show last night. The 44-year-old Melanie Masson was eliminated after entering a singoff with boyband District 3.

The judges vote was deadlocked again in a repeat of last weekend's elimination of Caroline Poole. While Barlow and Nicole Scherzinger voted to save Melanie, Tulisa Contostavlos and Louis Walsh chose to support District 3, leaving the final choice to the viewers. This week the public vote went in favour of District 3 and Masson was eliminated from the competition.

Her final performance was a rendition of Stay with Me, demonstrated her considerable vocal abilities, but was just not enough to help her stay in the competition.

She expressed her satisfaction with the entire experience and was quoted by The Independent as saying: "I have absolutely enjoyed every single second of being here and the opportunities it has brought to work with Gary, to work with everybody. It's just been the best experience, I've loved it."

The former contestant has a lot of things to keep her occupied, though. Masson is a full-time mother of two children - Rua, 5 and Ramsay, 3. She also runs a music class for under-fives under the pseudonym Fairy Flutterbye. Melanie is married to Scottish actor Forbes Mason.

After her departure Gary Barlow is left with only two contestants in the competition - Christopher Maloney and Kye Sones.
