How Sandra Bullock Became The Highest Paid Actress In Hollywood

Sandra Bullock Alfonso Cuaron George Clooney Melissa McCarthy Robert Downey Jr

The results of Forbes annual celebrity rich list are in and it is with a certain amount of surprise thatSandra Bullockwas the highest paid film star of the past year. Bullock raked in over $51 million (that just over £30 million) and it seems that the 50 year-old has made some very shrewd decisions over the past years over which films she attached her name to, and not all of them looked like sure-fire box-office smashes, on paper at least.

Sandra's box-office success has exerted a gravitational pull on all cash in her vicinity.

Gravity, directed by Alfonso Cuaron and also starring George Clooney, cost a whopping $100 million to produce thanks to its almost exclusive reliance on extensive special effects. Yet the film excelled with audiences and critics alike, scooping seven Oscars as well as a host of BAFTA’s. Bullock also duly received an Oscar nomination for her role as the astronaut caught in a potentially catastrophic disaster in Earth’s orbit. Gravity drew $716 million in global box-office takings, awarding Bullock and co-star Clooney a tidy sum for their efforts which included a gruelling shooting experience whereupon the leading duo were suspended from wires and trapped in claustrophobic space suits.

Stacy Keibler Got Married, But What Happened To George Clooney's Other Ex-Girlfriends?

George Clooney Stacy Keibler

It can’t be easy being George Clooney’s ex, but this weekend his former girlfriend Stacy Keibler showed she’d well and truly moved on by getting married to her boyfriend in Mexico. But what of the other women who have their names preceding by ‘George Clooney’s ex’? How do you follow dating the world’s most famous bachelor.

George ClooneyEternal bachelor, George Clooney

A long time ago in 1988, before George Clooney’ was famous or had a reputation, he was dating actress Kelly Preston. The relationship between the two future Hollywood stars was pretty serious, not just because the two moved in together, but because George gave Kelly a very special gift to symbolise their love, a pig named Max. Sadly for George Kelly didn't stick around too long, but happily when she left he got to keep the pig! Indeed whilst some may think George has a problem with commitment, he stayed loyal to Max the pig for nearly 20 years, until his death in 2006. Kelly of course moved on as well and is now married to John Travolta.

Is George Clooney's 'Gates Of Fire' The Best Movie Never Made?

George Clooney

Back in 2000 when ‘300’ was in development, there was another Spartan movie that looked set for the big screen: ’Gates of Fire’ which was spearheaded by none other than George Clooney. However 14 years later it looks as if ‘Gates of Fire’ can go down in history as the greatest movie never made.

George Clooney arriving at the world premiere of 'The Monuments Men'George Clooney was excited for 'Gates of Fire'

The story begins in 1998 with Hollywood script writer turned author Steven Pressfield. Pressfield had worked on Hollywood scripts such as 1992’s ‘Freejack’, a sci-fi movie that gave us the amazing combo of ‘The Mighty Ducks’ Emilo Estevez and the Rolling Stone’s Mick Jagger. He switched to novels in 1995 with ‘ The Legend of Bagger Vance’, which became a movie with Will Smith, but in 1998 he released the historical fiction novel, ‘Gates of Fire’.

"The Lego Movie" Still Blocking All Competition At The Box Office

George Clooney Kevin Hart

The Lego Movie is still going strong, after three straight weekends at the top of the box office charts. Over the three-day period, the movie made $31,5 million, leaving the competition far behind. New releases 3 Days to Kill and Pompeii came in at Nos. 2 and 3 with $12.3 million and a disappointing $10 million, respectively. Compared to Lego, the numbers seem very low, but they’re fairly typical of the slow February box office.

Lego Still
People are still paying to see The Lego Movie, not so much anything else.

Robocop and The Monuments Men both saw significant drops this weekend, taking fourth and fifth place in the weekend charts. RoboCop made just $9.4 million, while the George Clooney-directed historical flick made just over $8 million on its third outing – still not a bad record for a February release.

"The Monuments Men" Screens For President Obama At The White House's Family Theater

George Clooney Matt Damon Barack Obama

The Monuments Men – the Matt Damon and George Clooney-starring flick about a World War II platoon charged with protecting important works of art – was screened at a private White House event on Tuesday night. The movie follows the band of soldiers, as they are ordered by president Roosevelt to go into Germany to rescue masterpieces stolen by Nazis.

The Monuments Men Still
The movie stars a brilliant cast, which includes Clooney, Damon, John Goodman and Bill Murray, among others.

The movie was written and produced by Clooney, a generous donor to Obama's political campaigns, and Grant Heslov. While Clooney is a longtime supporter of Obama and hosted a fundraiser for his reelection at his Studio City home in May 2012. Damon on the other hand, has expressed his disillusionment with the president and his policies before. Most recently, Damon told BET last year that Obama "broke up with him," and he expressed concerns about U.S. drone operations under Obama and revelations by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden about the agency's spying programs. To that valid criticism, Obama responded with some of his own: "Matt Damon said he was disappointed in my performance. Well, Matt, I just saw The Adjustment Bureau, so right back atcha, buddy!"

World War II movies: haven't we had our fill of them yet? Apparently not, according to George Clooney who is currently watching his new war film, The Monuments Men, open across the world after months of anticipation. For every soldier there are a thousand stories and millions fought across all of the nations involved in the Second World War. If that's the case, we've barely scratched the surface.

The main global cinematic event this week is the Berlin Film Festival, which showcases high-profile films like Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac and George Clooney's The Monuments Men. After their starry New York premiere last week, Clooney and his gang of costars - including Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman and Jean Dujardin - have been dashing around Europe this week. Here's video footage from The Monuments Men Premiere at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York including the arrival of Director and Star George Clooney as well as appearences from other A-List cast members like Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon and Bill Murray. Incase you missed Shia LabBeouf's Paper bag stunt take a look here.

Another Berlin premiere debuted its first trailer this week, giving us a look at the biopic Yves Saint Laurent. Pierre Niney (Romantics Anonymous) plays the eponymous designer in the film, which traces his rise to fame and romantic liaisons with both men and women in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Unsurprisingly, the film looks stylish and achingly cool. It opens next month in Britain. Watch 'Yves Saint Laurent' trailer here.

'The Monuments Men' Promotional Tanks Roll Into London As Clooney Starts Debate

George Clooney John Goodman Bill Murray

Travelling around Europe on the premiere circuit, the cast and crew of The Monuments Men hit London this week to talk about art history. The press conference was held, appropriately, in Britain's National Gallery, and focussed on the threat to Europe's heritage during World War II.

"Hitler wasn't just trying to kill people and take their land," said writer-director-star George Clooney, "he wanted to destroy their culture. So he stole their art and destroyed a lot of it. He wanted to say that Picasso and Dali never existed. And the Monuments Men and Women went to get it back. This was the first time in the history of war that the victor didn't keep the spoils." The Monuments Men Review

Good

For an amazing true story performed by such a strong A-list cast, this is an oddly uninvolving film. Fragmented and uneven, it shifts from comedy to drama to romance to adventure, never letting us get the feel of any sequence. In other words, the episodic structure would have been much more suitable to a longer-format TV series. Even so, this is a fascinating chapter of history that we haven't heard nearly enough about. And the actors are good enough to keep us entertained.

It takes place as the tide begins to turn during World War II, and art historian Frank (Clooney) recruits a team of experts to protect Europe's most important paintings, sculptures and monuments from both Allied bombing and Nazi plundering. He recruits a handful of Americans (Damon, Murray, Goodman and Balaban) to work with a Brit (Bonneville) and a Frenchman (Dujardin), and as they spread out around the continent, they discover that the real problem is that Hitler is stealing art on a massive scale and hiding it somewhere. Working with a resistance-minded French museum curator (Blanchett), they are able to find where some 5 million stolen pieces are stashed.

The central theme is whether art is worth risking your life to save. And if Clooney and Heslov had allowed this idea to seep through the pores of the script, it might have carried a real wallop. But they announce it over and over again, never giving us a chance to think about it ourselves. Everything about the movie is just as unsubtle, with each sequence played for laughs, thrills, drama or romance, as required. Which means that nothing emerges as organic for these simplistically defined characters, who are a composite of some 350 Monuments Men and Women who did a job no one thought was possible. Even so, it's fun to watch these actors play with the material, stirring in snappy details here and there and of course playing on their strong chemistry.

Why 'The Monuments Men' Will Win Valentines Weekend UK Box Office

George Clooney John Goodman Cate Blanchett

There are 474 films coming out on Valentines Day, all with the specific view of pulling couples in to sit down in silence for two hours while they’re force-fed a story. How will The Monuments Men pull away from the pack to win the weekend? Well let me tell you.

Monuments MenGreat premise, poor execution - The Monuments Men

It’s a very simple formula. People who go to the cinema on Valentines Day don’t actually know anything about movies. If they knew about movies – or anything about life in general – they’d stay in on Valentines Day, eat pizza and watch episodes of Seinfeld. It’s the most comforting thing you can do.

Outlandish Theory: Did Clooney Delay 'Monuments Men' To Avoid Oscars Embarrassment?

George Clooney Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences

It wouldn’t be insane to suggest that George Clooney knows good from bad at this point in his career. The silver fox has certainly enjoyed some terrific turns over the decades, and when he’s involved in a stinker, it’s surely not news to him when the critics turn around and say: “this stinks”.

Monuments MenThe Monuments Men disappointed the critics

There must have been a point when, during the production of The Monuments Men – the World War II comedy/drama focused on an unlikely crew assembled to preserve art and culture otherwise threatened by the Nazis – that Clooney said to himself, ‘hang on, this isn’t very good.’

George Clooney Reveals His Long-Running Prank Of Imitating Brad Pitt

George Clooney John Krasinski Brad Pitt Matt Damon

George Clooney has revealed his obsession for sending cards and letters supposedly from his celebrity pals, all began in 2010 at John Krasinski's wedding. The reveal came in light of Matt Damon's discovery that the 'Ocean's Eleven' actor had been posting stationary with his name on to various people in and around Hollywood, yet apparently, Brad Pitt was the first person to fall victim to the practical joke.

"You sent me a thank you gift card" said Clooney, "it actually said Brad Pitt on it, which set the wheels in motion... I've been sending letters to people as Brad Pitt for four years. Don Cheadle was trying to do the Miles Davis story and I sent him a letter from Brad, because Brad produces films, and I said, 'You know, I'm producing this Miles Davis/Charlie Parker thing and Jamie Foxx is gonna play Miles Davis, but you'd be great as Charlie Parker?'"

What The Hell Happened To 'The Monuments Men'?

George Clooney Bill Murray John Goodman

There was a period - late October, early November - when bookmakers were terrified of George Clooney's The Monuments Men, and for good reason. The heavily financed historical-drama had a superb story to work from, it had a script from Clooney and Grant Heslov and a supporting cast that included Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Cate Blanchett, Jean Dujardin and Hugh Bonneville. It was the favorite to win Best Picture at the Oscars with very little value to be had.

Clooney eventually pulled the plug on the movie's Oscar-bait release date, owing to concerns about the special effects, however, rumors from the production suggested the director was struggling with the movie's tone and the trailers certainly didn't give any clues as to whether this was a serious historical drama, a comedy, or something else.

Matt Damon George Clooney Bill Murray Cate Blanchett John Goodman

The Monuments Men, the film that is predicted to keep the box office afloat during the generally slow month of February, is out in cinemas tomorrow. With an all-star cast, including Matt Damon, George Clooney, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett and Bill Murray among others, the Clooney-directed film tells the story of a special platoon, created during WWII at the order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt to rescue culturally important artwork from the Nazis. It’s based on a true story and a very new and different kind of war film.

The Monuments Men marks Clooney's fifth time in the director's chair.

The programme features a new gallery itinerary, display, a blog post and Sunday at the Metlecture event, Broadway World reports. The role of James J. Rorimer, a Monuments Man who became the Met's director after the war, is highlighted. Several individuals on the staff of the Metropolitan Museum-some of whom joined the Museum after the war-served as Monuments Men.

George Clooney's 'Monuments Men' Highlights Unknown WWII Heroes In Preventing Near Extinction Of Cultural Identity

'The Monuments Men' Is FINALLY Here. But Is It Any Good?

George Clooney Matt Damon Bill Murray Cate Blanchett

Based on the book by Robert M. Edsel,The Monuments Men centres on an Allied group named the 'Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives Program', tasked with saving pieces of art and other culturally important items before their destruction by Hitler during World War II. Directed by George Clooney, it marks the actor's fifth directorial endeavour. Aside from Clooney, Mouments Men boasts an impressive cast including Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Hugh Bonneville and Cate Blanchett.

Critics have so far been divided on this unusual wartime drama. Kam Williams writing for Baret Newswire called it “a history lesson about an obscure chapter of World War II successfully turned into entertaining Hollywood fare.” Whilst Variety’s Scott Foundas enjoyed the subject he felt Clooney’s adaptation did not do it justice, saying “Clooney has transformed a fascinating true-life tale into an exceedingly dull and dreary caper pic cum art-appreciation seminar - a museum-piece movie about museum people.”

Indeed the exact subject matter of The Monuments Men means it just doesn't have the amount of action you’d expect from a wartime drama, “Escapism junkies may feel betrayed,” wrote Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers before adding “Clooney has crafted a movie abort about aspiration, about culture at risk, about things worth fighting for. However Todd McCarthy writing for the Hollywood Reporter said,  “Too much of the time, The Monuments Men falls into a compromised middle zone, not urgent and only mildly amusing.”
