Shock, horror! George Clooney is engaged and she's NOT a supermodel. But who is Amal Alamuddin, Clooney's new fiancee?
We’ve got a new idol. Not only is Amal Alamuddin a graduate of Oxford University, as well as a top humanitarian lawyer and UN adviser, she’s also engaged to George Clooney. Yes, someone has actually managed to get the serial bachelor to put a ring on it and even better, she’s not a supermodel!
George Clooney has dated a string of supermodels and famous actresses
Don’t get us wrong, she’s a very striking looking woman, but Clooney’s track record suggested that he was an incurable modelizer (for those who haven’t seen the early episodes of Sex and the City, a modelizer is a man who strictly dates models). Sure, he’s thrown a few actresses (and one cocktail waitress) in there as well, but he’s rarely veered away from the entertainment industry when picking his lady friends. Until now, and we're so pleased about it!

Born in Beirut, Lebanon, Alamuddin is a British national who also speaks French and Arabic. But then again, who doesn't these days? In 2002 she passed the New York Bar, before passing the Bar of England and Wales in 2012. Currently specialising in human rights, extradition, international and criminal law, she had previously represented WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange. She’s assisted in the trial of Slobodan Milosevic, the Yugoslav politician charged with crimes against humanity and genocide, as well as being a legal advisor to the King of Bahrain. Yes, she advises the king of a whole country. If there’s ever a time to think ‘I’ve made it!’ it’s when a king is asking for your help. Another time is when you’ve got George Clooney on one knee in front of you holding out a bloody great big diamond.

On top of all this, she’s also a regular contributor to various books on international criminal law, has lectured at various top universities and co-edited The Law and Practice of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. Just odd jobs then, eh?
OK, Amal, you’re showing us up here. You’re a bit of an overachiever and you’ve managed to get George Clooney to settle down. Either there’s some kind of voodoo witchcraft involved, or you’re just flipping fantastic. We're sort of hoping it's witchcraft, or else we really need to start getting our act together.
What is fantastic to see is that Clooney appears to finally have chosen a partner for brains rather than beauty. Or rather gigantic brains and beauty. While Alamuddin is a beautiful woman (she's been voted hottest barrister in London by blog Your Barrister Boyfriend), she is clearly super smart and switched on and perhaps that's what he needed to finally take the plunge. If she's blown us away, we can only imagine how he feels about her.
