She literally had no words.
Every woman on earth knew that Amal Clooney was a lucky woman when it was revealed that she was to wed George Clooney, though it seems she could hardly believe her luck either as his proposal left her stunned and speechless for almost half an hour. We can totally understand that.
Amal Clooney and George Clooney had a bit of a rocky proposal
Clooney had previously insisted that he would never become a married man, but changed his mind just six months into his relationship with Amal. And apparently it came just as much as a shock to her as it did to him because it took her ages to realise that he was trying to propose to her.
Planned proposals don't always go exactly to plan, expecially when you're trying to be sneaky about the whole thing. In fact, Amal was very much considering ordering in her dinner after she returned home from her trip to London, before George revealed that he had in fact made dinner for them both.
'It was one of those horrible moments. We didn't talk about it', George confessed on 'The Ellen Degeneres Show', though it can't have been all 'horrible'. 'I plotted the whole thing out, had the ring hidden behind her. I had music playing... Everything was planned out.'
He even revealed that he had his Aunt Rosemary (a 50s chart-topping cabaret singer famous for hits such as 'Come On-a My House' and 'Hey There') singing the ballad 'Why Shouldn't I?' on his playlist for the big question. However, as soon as the song comes on, things start going wrong.
'She gets up to go wash the dishes, which she's never done', he recalls, adding that he had to persuade her away from the chore. 'She comes back in and finally I blew out the candle and said, 'I think the lighter's in the box behind you'. She reaches around, she pulls out the box and I've got just the ring sitting in there.'
For most women, that would be an obvious sign, but George must have lots of rings stashed away in boxes around his house because Amal wasn't in the least bit stunned. 'She looks at it and she's like, 'It's a ring.' Like somebody had left it there some other time, I don't know.'
More: One woman was lucky enough to win a date with George Clooney
He got down on one knee and professed his love for her, but she still had no words to say. 'I said 'I couldn't imagine spending the rest of my life without you,' And she kept looking at the ring, and she was looking at me and she's like, 'Oh, my God.'' If this was a soap opera, we'd be screaming at the television by now. And George eventually also ran out of patience after, what he calculated by checking his playlist, a whole 25 minutes. 'I Literally just said, 'Look, you know, I hope the answer is yes, but I need an answer 'cause I'm 52, and I could throw out my hip pretty soon if I don't get an answer.' And then she said, 'Oh, oh yes.' So it obviously worked out really well.'
So even though Amal obviously didn't know her husband well enough then to catch on in his romantic plan, they have still turned out to be a match made in heaven. George tells Ellen: 'From the minute we met we felt like we were going to be together.'
