George Clooney has been left reeling in fury in a spat with The Daily Mail. The actor admonished the British tabloid for printing what he described as a "lie" regarding his relations with his fiancée Amal Alamuddin's mother, his future mother-in-law.

The Mail alleged that Clooney's fiancée's mother, Baria, had told "half of Beirut" that she was opposed the forthcoming wedding on religious grounds because she is a member of Lebanon's Islamic Druze community.

Clooney lashed out at the Mail, denouncing the newspaper for fabricating a story that he ruled to be "false" and "irresponsible." The incensed 53 year-old wrote "None of the story is factually true. Amal's mother is not Druze. She has not been to Beirut since Amal and I have been dating, and she is in no way against the marriage."

The Mail responded with an apology and took the article down from its website but still claimed that its journalist had used a strong source. "She based her story on conversations with a long-standing contact who has strong connections with senior members of the Lebanese community in the UK and the Druze in Beirut," managing editor Charles Garside said.

Now, Clooney has responded once again to the Daily Mail in the form of an article published by USA Today. In no uncertain terms, Clooney criticises the paper's practises, further questioning its sources.

He noted that there was a disparity between Garside saying that "senior members of the Lebanese community" has provided the information and the journalist's claims that she had spoke to a friend. "A 'family friend' was the source. So either they were lying originally or they're lying now," Clooney said.

"What separates this from all of the ridiculous things the Mail makes up is that now, by their own admission, it can be proved to be a lie. In fact, a premeditated lie," he wrote.

"So I thank the Mail for its apology. Not that I would ever accept it, but because in doing so they've exposed themselves as the worst kind of tabloid," the Gravity actor added.
