The movie star opened up about his fears for his wife of almost a year during an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert last week (ends11Sep15), revealing the humanitarian lawyer's sidekick had been stabbed.

He said, "It's a dangerous place to be right now. I'm very concerned with her being there, quite honestly."

But at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada at the weekend, Clooney said, "She's out of The Maldives and into Sri Lanka now, so she's much better."

And the actor admits the worst thing about being married to a woman who puts herself in harm's way to protect others is she won't let him travel with her, adding, "She's a grown woman with her own career, but it's tough when they're stabbing her co-counsel in the head a couple of days before she gets there.

"But she's doing the right thing and she's doing it for the right reasons."

Amal is defending Nasheed, who was given a 13-year prison sentence for alleged terrorism. Amal has called the sentence a "mockery of justice" and has taken his case pro bono.
