Uh-oh, bad day to be a journalist involved in the phone hacking scandal; George Clooney is coming for you. The actor-turned-director has chosen the events that rocked Britain as the subject for his next film.

Whilst many know him best for his turns in films including Oceans Eleven and The Descendents, Clooney has made headway as a serious Hollywood director since his first outing in 2002 with the critically-acclaimed Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. He has gone on to direct films including Good Night and Good Luck and The Ides of March, and his latest film, The Monuments Men, premeired at the Berlin Film Festival in February. Although his most recent film didn't perform well with critics, Good Night and Good Luck was nominated for six Academy Awards and holds an impressive 93% 'Fresh' rating on review agregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Clooney is now returning to politics for his new film, based on the memoir of journalist Nick Davies about the News International phone hacking scandal which rocked the UK in 2011 and led to the shut down of the News of the World. No casting has been announced for the film, but shooting is expected to begin next year.

In a statement Clooney spoke of his excitement about the project, stating "This has all the elements – lying, corruption, blackmail – at the highest levels of government by the biggest newspaper in London. And the fact that it’s true is the best part. Nick is a brave and stubborn reporter and we consider it an honor to put his book to film."

What is certain is that Clooney will be pulling no punches. He was recently embroiled in a bitter spat with The Daily Mail after they published false claims about his relationship with his fiancee's family, and will certainly have little sympathy for the tabloids- who can blame him! Let's just hope this new film is as great as Good Night and Good Luck, and not another Leatherheads.
