Unfortunately, even the highly anticipated D23 did not bring any significant announcements about the Lucasfilm franchise.
If Star Wars fans weren’t already a bit restless about the upcoming Episode VII, Disney’s D23 Expo this weekend was definitely enough of a teaser. Not because any footage was revealed, in fact quite the opposite – at the beginning of the expo, company president Bob Iger stood before the crowd to make the disappointing announcement: "Now we’re just as excited as you are about Star Wars: Episode VII. In fact, we’re speechless. At least we’re going to be somewhat speechless at this Expo because we aren’t ready to share some of the details with you just yet."
Harrison Ford will return as Han Solo, but we won't get a glimpse of that for a while.
"But trust me, it’s going to be fantastic,” Iger continued, according to The Verge. “Come on, Star Wars and Disney together. How could it not be fantastic?"
The company did not reveal any teaser footage at last month’s Comic-Con either, but back then, the fans didn’t react too badly, expecting that the company would save any meatier bits for their own expo. The entertainment giant has pulled that trick before, with last year’s Avengers. Disney opted out of showing any footage at the massive San Diego Summit and instead reserved the actual footage and teasers for the hardcore fans at their own expo. This time, however, even those hardcore fans were denied the privilege, continuing in the same vein of secrecy, that has surrounded the production ever since Disney acquired Lucasfilm last year.
Bob Iger served up a disappointment.
So instead of some highly anticipated footage or perhaps even a trailer, the Disney live action panel featured a presentation by Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn, who repeated the known facts about the production, including the 2015 release date and concluded with the following statement: "I do wish I could tell you more, but there are dark forces. And they are watching." The audience booed as Horn moved on to introduce the Marvel presentation.
But the movie will be amazing, or so he promised.
