Gina Carano has joined the cast of Fox-Marvel’s upcoming Deadpool, which stars Ryan Reynolds as the masked superhero. Variety reports the former MMA competitor will play the role of Angel Dust in the film, who is a member of the 'Morlocks' mutant group.

The film will be directed by Tim Miller, making his feature length debut and is scheduled to begin shooting in Vancouver next month. Producing will be Lauren Shuler Donner, while Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernic have penned the screenplay.

Carano made her film debut in 2011’s Haywire, following a successful MMA career which saw her amass a 7-1 win loss record. She has also starred in 2013’s Fast and Furious 6 and recently wrapped production on Bus 657 and the Kickboxer reboot starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dave Bautista.

The character Deadpool made his first big screen appearance in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where he was portrayed by Reynolds and since then fans have been clamouring for a solo movie. Last year test footage from the project found its way online and won praise from fans of the Marvel comic book.

Nicknamed the "Merc with a Mouth” Deadpool is known for humorously breaking the fourth wall, as well as being impossible to kill. The character first appeared in comic books in the early 90s, originally as a villain.

Earlier this week Reynolds offered fans a teaser of things to come when he gave a a first look at the character’s signature mask on Twitter. Posting a picture of himself and the mask the actor wrote, “Sepia tone disguises the fact the mask is ballerina pink. It's early. 365 sleeps early. #deadpool #prototypes.”
