Chef Gordon Ramsey has thanked fans from his hospital bed where he's recovering from emergency surgery after rupturing his Achilles tendon earlier this week. The injury also means the 49-year-old has been forced to pull out of this Sunday’s Soccer Aid charity football match.

Posting a picture from his hospital bed which showed his bandaged foot, Ramsey told his followers: ‘Surgery went well, thank you all for your support and kind messages. Obviously upset I can't play this weekend.’

‘I'm not good at lying down. Now I've got no choice, need to sit still !!!! Thank you love to all.’ Ramsey has also had to pull out of next weekend’s Ironman 70.3 triathlon in Staffordshire in aid of Great Ormond Street children’s hospital.

Announcing the disappointing news yesterday, Ramsey said: ‘I’ve been really looking forward to participating in both this weekend’s @socceraid and this year’s #GTR100.'

'Sadly, following the devastating news that I have ruptured my Achilles, today, on the advice of my doctors I have undergone emergency surgery to fix the tear and can no longer participate in the forthcoming events.’
