The Grateful Dead’s farewell show has been hailed as a success, both in terms of their performance and financial gain, yet there was also an unpleasant incident involving one of their fans. The legendary rock group performed their last concert together as The Grateful Dead on Sunday (5th July) where a fan was rushed to hospital after a fall in Soldier Field arena, Chicago.

The fan in question, an unnamed 41-year-old man, was reportedly sitting on the railings in the stands at Soldier Field. He fell around 20 to 25 feet, according to reports in The Chicago Tribune. The emergency services were called around 9pm and the man was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The fan was in a critical condition upon arrival but on Monday it was announced his condition had stabilised. Police are treating the fall as an accident. 

The remaining members of The Grateful Dead, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, announced earlier this year they would be performing together in five concerts in California and Chicago. Two of the shows would be held in California, the state where the band formed, and three in Chicago. The series of concerts would mark both 50th anniversary of the band and act as a farewell for their fans.

The band also broke some records with their final concerts. 71,000 people bought tickets for the farewell show on Sunday, the most tickets ever sold at Soldier Field. Audiences of over 70,000 attended the shows on Friday and Saturday (3rd and 4th July). Amongst those attending the concert were Katy Perry and John Mayer, according to People. 

President Barack Obama also sent the band a special message, congratulating them on being part of ‘an iconic American band that embodies the creativity, passion and ability to bring people together that makes American music so great’ [via People].
