Reformed rock legends Guns N’ Roses were greeted with heckling and booing from an audience in Melbourne this week, as they took to the stage more than an hour late and got the name of the city totally wrong.

The American rock act are in the middle of the Asia / Oceania leg of their extensive Not In This Lifetime tour, which sees the so-called ‘classic line-up’ members Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan sharing a stage for the first time since 1993.

However, when they called in at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Tuesday night (February 14th), they arrived late and greeted the crowd by shouting ‘Sydney’. Oops.

The Gunners’ guitar technician and announcer McBob had addressed the crowd a short while beforehand to apologise for the band’s lateness, and had also gotten the name of the city wrong. Lead singer Axl Rose presumably took his cue from that original mistake.

“Melbourne! Accidentally after 30 years McBob made an error, we're truly sorry,” the band later wrote via their official Facebook page, acknowledging the blunder. “Thank you for coming out tonight!”

The band was reportedly the subject of an ‘airport security’ prank perpetrated by fellow rock legends AC/DC when they touched down in Australia.

Touching down last week for their string of gigs in the country, they were asked by someone they thought was a member of airport security to stay on their plane for the purposes of a security search. However, it turned out to be AC/DC’s guitarist Angus Young wearing a fluorescent jacket.

“Told we had to stay on plane last night in Sydney; ‘airport security’ wanted to do a check,” wrote bassist McKagan on Twitter last Wednesday (February 8th). “We waited. It was Angus Young is an orange vest!”
