'Iron Man 3' Director Says Film's Villain Was Changed From Female To Male Because Of Toy Sales

Shane Black Guy Pearce Rebecca Hall Kevin Feige Robert Downey Jr

Iron Man 3 director Shane Black has shed new light on the sexism in the movie industry, by describing how the villain in the 2013 Marvel film had to be changed from female to male, to help toy sales. Speaking to Uproxx, Black said that after the draft of the film’s script was finished, he received a memo saying the villain’s gender had to be changed to male, because a female toy wouldn't sell as well.

Shane BlackShane Black has revealed how Iron Man 3’s villain was changed from male to female.

“All I’ll say is this, on the record: There was an early draft of Iron Man 3 where we had an inkling of a problem,” Black began. “Which is that we had a female character who was the villain in the draft.” The character is thought to be Rebecca Hall’s Maya Hansen, who ended up having a much smaller part.

Thomas Wolfe was a writer who was used to rejection. His constantly lengthy novels didn't seem to appeal to the vast majority of publishers out there and most editors were fazed by his compulsion to write hundreds of pages.

Not willing to give up on his talent, Wolfe send his pages to Maxwell Perkins, the man who originally published Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. When Thomas is summoned to Maxwell's office, he presumes he's once again about to be told that he's been unsuccessful but the chance to meet a man who's had so much literary influence is too much to pass up. The meeting begins as Wolfe thinks it would but he's soon informed by Perkins that the company will take on Wolfe's latest book.

Wolfe and Perkins form a close relationship, Wolfe still delivering copious amounts of words and Perkins seemingly the only man capable of editing them.  As their personal and professional relationship deepens, Perkins is taken in more and more by the acclaimed genius.

Stars Talk Iron Man 3 Ahead Of Hollywood Premiere [Video]

Robert Downey Jr Ben Kingsley Gwyneth Paltrow Guy Pearce Don Cheadle Rebecca Hall

The Hollywood red carpet premiere for one of the most anticipated films of the year, Iron Man 3, takes place tonight (April 24, 2013) and ahead of the big evening, several of the cast's stars gave their thoughts on what has still be a largely-guarded secret. There's well over half an hour of footage for you tuck into below, including interviews with Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall and, of course, Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr and his shady nemesis for the third instalment, Sir Ben Kingsley - who plays The Mandarin.

It's been a big week for fans of Iron Man 3, with a brand new TV spot airing during the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, confirmation that Gywneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts will be suiting up alongside Robert Downey Jr and, now, some brand new stills from Marvel's new movie. The Avengers destroyed box-office records this summer, though Downey Jr's return as Tony Stark could make it another huge year for the studio. This time, Mr Stark is up against a brand-new foe in Ben Kingsley's Mandarin, his toughest test to date.

Paltrow's Potts is the most prominent of the supporting cast and rumors that she'd be donning a suit of armour of her own were confirmed in this week's new TV spot. Speculation first emerged after images of LEGO's new Iron Man 3 series were leaked online, showing a female character in an Iron Man-esque suit. In the promo, Potts lands on-top of Stark in a protective stance, saying, "I got you." It appears as though the new movie follows Pepper's storyline in the 'Invincible Iron Man' comic book series, in which she took on the hero name Rescue and helped Tony Stark's alter-ego on his missions.

Iron Man 3 Trailer

Tony Stark may be Iron Man, but he's feeling less than unbreakable these days. Plagued by nightmares and guilty feelings, he is forced to doubt himself and his ability to protect himself and the ones he loves against a new enemy; the formidably ruthless Mandarin. His doubts are only amplified when his world and his power source are brutally snatched from him and left to burn at the hands of his enemy and he is left with his own internal strengths and resourcefulness alone to find the perpetrator and end his reign of terror. Stark is finally made to confront himself and his superhero identity as Mandarin sets out to prove there are no real heroes in the world.

The third instalment of this Marvel adventure, 'Iron Man 3' is set to be the most hard-hitting of the movies so far with questions being raised less about Iron Man and more about the true Tony Stark and his deeper abilities. It has been directed by Shane Black (the writer of the 'Lethal Weapon' film series) who also co-wrote the comic action flick with Drew Pearce ('Lip Service', 'No Heroics'). It is set for a spectacular release in cinemas on April 26th 2013 in the UK.

Starring: Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale, Jon Favreau, Ben Kingsley, Paul Bettany, William Sadler, Stan Lee, Yvonne Zima, Dale Dickey, Ashley Hamilton, Ty Simpkins, Spencer Garrett,

Lance Armstrong Movie: 10 Actors Who Could Play The Disgraced Cyclist (Pictures)

Lance Armstrong Jake Gyllenhaal Brad Pitt Sam Worthington Guy Pearce Matt Damon Michael Fassbender Aaron Eckhart Max Martini Joseph Gordon-Levitt

As was widely expected, a movie about disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong is set to go into production after Bad Robot partners JJ Abrams and Bryan Burk snapped up the rights to Juliet Macur’s forthcoming book Cycle of Lies: The Fall of Lance Armstrong, reports Deadline.com. Macur – a sports reporter for The New York Times – has covered Armstrong’s career for over a decade, through the cyclist’s Tour de France wins, his recovery from cancer and eventual doping revelations. The American had denied using performance enhancing drugs for years, though finally admitted to cheating during a much-publicized interview with Oprah Winfrey last week.

Sony Pictures has long had an Armstrong movie project in the works, though that movie was dropped when the cyclist’s fall from grace began. It was set to star Jake Gyllenhaal and would have told the ‘American hero’ narrative of Armstrong’s rollercoaster career. Of course, the story has changed dramatically and Abrams film will focus on a cheat who pays a high price for his lies. As movie writer Mike Fleming Jr reports, the whole thing is reminiscent of when Tom Cruise and Cameron Crowe made a deal with Phil Spector to tell the story of the producer’s life story, though the director went on record as saying the film “lacked a good third act.” That was obviously provided shortly afterwards when Spector was convicted of shooting the actress Lana Clarkson, but Universal, Crowe and Cruise never went forward with the project. It’s likely that JJ Abrams and his team will tackle the Armstrong project head on, but who could play the man himself? Who has the presence to portray such a complex character on-screen? Here’s 10 actors who we think could become Lance:

Fingers Crossed: Kristen Wiig In The Running For Anchorman 2 Role

Kristen Wiig Steve Carell Adam McKay Judd Apatow Paul Rudd Christina Applegate Guy Pearce

We’re praying this latest rumor from The Wrap has got some substance to it. According to the movie industry insiders, Kristen Wiig is a likely candidate to play the role of Steve Carell’s love interest in the Anchorman sequel, Anchorman: The Legend Continues, for Paramount Pictures. Currently, no cast members have been selected, beyond the core few that we already know and love.

The new Anchorman instalment is being directed by Adam McKay, with Judd Apatow on production duties – under the Apatow Productions banner. We reckon Wiig would make a perfect addition to the Anchorman cast – she’s already proven her comic chops with the hit movie Bridesmaids, and we sense that her deadpan acting style would make for some raucous ROFL moments if she were cast alongside Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Christina Applegate and Steve Carell in the sequel to the 2004 hit. Anchorman fetched around $85 million at the box office and we’d put our money on a sequel being even more successful.

Kristen Wiig is one of the most in-demand actresses in Hollywood right now, thanks to the success of Bridesmaids. She recently starred in Imogene, an indie film that featured at the Toronto International Film Festival. She also been busy filming The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and Hateship Friendship, along with Guy Pearce

Iron Man 3 Teaser Trailer Does The Trick

Robert Downey Jr Gwyneth Paltrow Ben Kingsley Guy Pearce Rebecca Hall

A brief but effective teaser trailer of the upcoming 3rd installment of the Iron Man series of movies has been released online.

Those cheeky devils at Marvel certainly do know how to tickle our movie-going-tastebuds. The 18 second trailer sees various scenes from the film, utterly rife with drama and intrigue. Tony Stark AKA Iron Man being harassed by the press, Pepper Potts in hysterical tears, overcome by fear as we see her trapped in something metal, somewhere dark, and Ben Kingsley who plays the hero's arch nemesis The Mandarin, loading a gun. None of it's surprising, but nothing could excite us more. As yet, the film is a long way off, but tomorrow (23rd Oct 2012) sees the release of the official full length trailer, which is just enough to keep us satisfied until the release of the movie.

Robert Downey Jr. again stars as the eponymous hero, and Gwyneth Paltrow returns to her role as his love interest, but this film will also include newbies Guy Pearce (Memento) and Rebecca Hall (Frost/Nixon), as the creators of a virus. ABC News reports a brief synopsis for the film, which reads: "With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: Does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?" A question everyone wants to know the answer to, but even with the trailer released tomorrow, we'll have to wait another 6 and a half months to find out! Iron Man 3 is set for release May 3rd 2013.

Lawless Review

Extraordinary
Director Hillcoat and musician-turned-screenwriter Cave previously worked together back home in Australia on the dark Western The Proposition, and now they have reunited in America for this true story set during Prohibition in the early 1930s. Unsurprisingly, it plays out like a Western. And it also features two of The Proposition's memorable actors, Pearce and Taylor.

The story centres on the three Bondurant brothers in rural Virginia. Eldest sibling Forrest (Hardy) runs the family moonshine business with middle brother Howard (Clarke). But the younger Jack (LaBeouf) wants in on the action and secretly teams up with whiz-kid Cricket (DeHaan) to speed up production and sell their wares to a big-city gangster (Oldman). Then slimy city-slicker Federal Agent Rakes (Pearce) arrives, determined to stop bootlegging no matter who he has to torture and kill. Meanwhile, a sexy barmaid (Chastain) with a shady past arrives to distract Forrest, while Jack daringly woos the rebellious daughter (Wasikowska) of the local preacher.

Lawless Trailer

The Bondurant Brothers, Forrest, Howard and Jack, take up lawless methods of achieving the American Dream during the Depression in Franklin County, Virginia. Soon their illegal money-making schemes, including selling their home brewed moonshine in their saloon, attract the attention of the local law enforcement who recruit a corrupt inner-city cop, Charlie Rakes, to break the brothers and force them to give him shares in their profits. In an attempt to gain his brothers' respect and win the heart of the pure and well brought up Bertha who seeks danger and excitement, the suggestible and smart Jack partners with the brutal and, quite frankly, untrustworthy city gangster Floyd Banner - things start to become strained for the Bondurants when the 'indestructible' Forrest is seriously injured and loyalty among the brothers is questioned.

Prometheus Review

Excellent
There are clear echoes of Scott's last outer space thriller (1979's Alien) in this big, bold film, but this is something very different. It's certainly not a clear prequel. And even if the plot is full of holes, it's utterly mesmerising.

When archaeologists Shaw and Holloway (Rapace and Marshall-Green) figure out that ancient civilisations share a map to a specific star system, the Weyland CEO (Pearce) funds a two-year mission to get answers about the origin of humanity. Led by Weyland crony Vickers (Theron) and Captain Janek (Elba), Shaw and Holloway are accompanied by a helpful android (Fassbender) and a team of not-so-enthusiastic scientists. But what they find on this distant moon isn't what they expected, and the remnants of this civilisation aren't as dead as they seem.

Video - A Relaxed Guy Pearce Takes Part In Lockout Interview

Guy Pearce, star of the upcoming 'prison break' movie Lockout, discussed the film during a satellite interview promoting the film. Here, he discusses the fact that he performed most of his own stunts although didn't come out of the filming process unscathed. He details the battle wounds he's picked up over the course of his career, revealing that he still bears scars from his part in The Count Of Monte Cristo.

Unfortunately for all sci-fi and Ridley Scott fans, when he was questioned about the highly anticipated Alien prequel Prometheus, he remained tight lipped so not to drop any spoilers

In the near future the world most secure prison MS1 houses the most dangerous prisoners on Earth, floating precariously above the atmosphere offering no chance of escape for the convicts. That is until one convict in particular makes things increasingly inconvenient for those below him on Earth as he manages to unlock the cells of each prisoner, with an ensuing mass riot making things even more uncomfortable for authoritarians. What's worse is that the President's daughter, Emilie Warnock, just so happens to be on board the galactic detention centre. A rescue operation must be formed and ex-agent Snow takes on the lone mission to ensure her safe return as well as restore order in the prison.

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark Review

Excellent
This inventive horror film plays to our deepest childhood fears. It's like a demented variation on The Borrowers, and first-rate acting and effects work combine to thoroughly creep us out.

Shy, artistic 8-year-old Sally (Madison) moves across the country to live with her architect dad Alex (Pearce) and his designer girlfriend Kim (Holmes) in a massive old Rhode Island mansion. But she soon starts hearing strange noises, and after discovering a boarded-up basement studio, things start getting a bit freaky. But how can she convince her sceptical father and the stepmum she doesn't trust that there's something in the house that wants to tear the family apart? Even after the handyman (Thompson) is attacked, Alex continues his renovations so he can lure a buyer (Dale).

The Time Machine (2002) Review

Weak
Guy Pearce remakes his second film of the year with The Time Machine... and it's barely March. Unfortunately, he had considerably better luck with The Count of Monte Cristo than with this limp retread.

Then again, the original Time Machine wasn't really anything special - a bunch of bad makeup effects and a weak plot. This time out the makeup's better but the story's a total loss.

The Count Of Monte Cristo Review

Good

The latest big screen adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' "The Count of Monte Cristo" has such a conspicuously clean Hollywood ending that, even though I've never read the book, I was suspicious and went online to bone up a little before writing this review.

Sure enough, even the central act of revenge that motivates this classic tale of obstinate, meticulous reprisal has been unduly rewritten to make for a cinematic and action-packed climax. The hero has been acquitted of his less honorable acts, the fates of characters have been drastically altered (those that haven't been dropped completely, that is), and comic relief has been shoehorned into the story so crudely you can almost see the impatient studio suit tapping his foot on the set and saying, "Can't this be funnier?"

Yet even with these gross departures, this "Count" has such a flavorful, popcorn-literature air about it that at its worst it still recalls the best of Golden Era swashbuckler flicks.
