Gwyneth Paltrow Recalls Being Worried She'd Get Fired After Kissing Johnny Depp In 'Mortdecai'

Mortdecai Review

Bad

Despite a superior cast and terrific-looking production values, this mystery romp is a misfire on every level. The only vaguely entertaining moments come in some snappy wordplay that's presumably all that remains of Kyril Bonfiglioli's beloved novel Don't Point That Thing at Me. Otherwise, the film feels clumsy and outdated, and even Johnny Depp's quirky schtick seems halfhearted. So even though it looks great and elicits a few giggles, it's such a mess that it's hard to imagine why anyone got involved.

Depp plays Lord Charlie Mortdecai, an art expert whose immaculately kept manor house is at risk of foreclosure due to unpaid taxes. So he leaps at the finder's fee when his old pal MI5 Inspector Martland (Ewan McGregor) asks him to investigate a murder linked to a missing Goya painting. The problem is that Martland still holds a torch for Charlie's wife Joanna (Gwyneth Paltrow), a brainy bombshell who launches her own investigation into the case. With his trusty manservant Jock (Paul Bettany) by his side, Charlie is taken to Moscow and Los Angeles in search of the Goya. And it all boils over in a chaotic encounter with a smirking art collector (Jeff Goldblum), his man-crazy daughter (Olivia Munn) and a sneaky killer (Jonny Pasvolsky).

Despite quite a lot of adult-aimed innuendo and violence, director David Koepp (Premium Rush) shoots the movie as if it's a hyperactive kiddie flick, all bright colours and shameless over-acting, with whooshing digitally animated transitions and a series of awkwardly staged car chases. None of this is remotely amusing. Even the constant double entendres are painfully overplayed, while the cartoonish Received Pronunciation accents put on by Depp, Paltrow and McGregor are more distracting than humorous. All of this leaves the characters impossible to engage with on any level; they aren't funny, endearing or even interesting.

Nearly a year after the now infamous ‘conscious uncoupling’, actress Gwyneth Paltrow has opened up. Speaking in the February issue of Marie Claire magazine, Paltrow shed some light of her own on why she and her husband called it a day after more than a decade of marriage.

The 42 year old said: “There was nothing dramatic or anything. I had built my life on trying to be all things to all people, and I just couldn’t do it anymore. I really had the sense that I wasn’t allowed to have needs, and I had to prove my specialness or self-worth by doing all this stuff and taking care of everybody else, and I just sort of hit a wall.”

Mortdecai Trailer

When a priceless painting is stolen with the presumable intention of being sold to fund terrorist activities, England needs a hero. Enter, Mortdecai. Lord Charles Mortdecai (Johnny Depp) is a well-known and barely liked art dealer. He is also on the verge of bankruptcy. Well, 'on the verge' may be a little too generous. Mortdecai's extravagant lifestyle ensures that he is in desperate need of money - so much so, that he is willing to take on the job of tracking down and returning the painting. Or, perhaps, he'll steal it himself when he gets the chance. Either way, he'll have to get his hands on it first, and that is going to be far from easy. Or safe.

Gwyneth Paltrow Claims Negativity "Changes The Structure" Of Water

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow has put her foot in her moth once again.

In recent months the 41 year-old actress has managed to attract a lot of haters due to several controversial comments she has made. But Paltrow's latest observation is just flat out bizarre.

The 'Iron-Man' star posted a statement on her lifestyle website, Goop, about the intriguing qualities of water, claiming the compound has the ability to feel negativity.

Gwyneth Paltrow Suggests Water Has Feelings, Earns Tidal Wave Of Scorn

Gwyneth Paltrow Chris Martin

Gwyneth Paltrow has yet again found herself in the midst of a sea of derision over comments she has made about...well, life. Obviously there was the whole "conscious uncoupling" debacle, then there was the time she compared her internet struggles to real life war and then the constant use of ingredients like "mint flavored liquid chlorophyll" in recipes on her lifestyle blog, Goop.

The latest controversy? It's another Goop goof: after Gwyneth used her blog to announce her split from Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, all eyes have been on her online journal for more developments. This time, the 41 year-old Iron Man star talks about "the energy of consciousness" and suggests that water may be a sentient element with feelings.

"I am fascinated by the growing science behind the energy of consciousness and its effects on matter," Paltrow writes. "I have long had Dr. Emoto's coffee table book on how negativity changes the structure of water, how the molecules behave differently depending on the words or music being expressed around it," she adds, citing the work of Dr. Sadeghi, an entrepreneur who has been widely criticized for his theories.

More Bad PR: Cindy McCain's Response To Gwyneth Paltrow's War Comment

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow’s PR blunder is just getting worse and worse. After Paltrow was slammed by an actual green beret for comparing Twitter hate to being at war, Cindy McCain has taken aim at the actress, too. McCain, the wife of Senator John McCain, who is himself a decorated veteran, had this to say to Paltrow, in 140 characters or less:

Gwyneth Paltrow Criticized By Real Soldier Green Beret Bryan Sikes For War Comments

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow received lots of criticism as of late for her recent controversial comments, comparing online abuse she sustains to fighting in a war.

The Hollywood actress has already been publically slammed by Cindy MCCain, the wife of former U.S. Presidential candidate and Vietnam War vet John MCCain, but now an actual soldier wants his say.

When speaking about being subjected to daily abuse online, Paltrow said: "It's almost like how, in war, you go through this bloody, dehumanising thing, and then something is defined out of it. My hope is, as we get out of it, we'll reach the next level of conscience."

Actual Soldier Responds To Gwyneth Paltrow's Foot-In-Mouth Comment. And He's Not Happy

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow’s recent talk at a tech conference earlier in the week might have been completely well meaning, but it resulted in one of the biggest PR blunders of the year so far. When Paltrow compared coming across online hate to the experience of being at war, you can bet a whole lot of people were offended. A quote from Paltrow’s talk, as published by Page Six, goes: “You come across [online comments] about yourself and about your friends, and it’s a very dehumanizing thing … It’s almost like how, in war, you go through this bloody, dehumanizing thing, and then something is defined out of it.”

Gwyneth Paltrow
No, Gwyneth Paltrow, it definitely isnt the same thing.

It’s easy to see why people would question this – particularly people, who have actually served in the military and actually fought in real-life wars. One of Paltrow’s most vocal critics was Sergeant First Class Bryan Sikes, who suffered a broken neck and back in a 2008 IED explosion in Afghanistan. Here are some choice quotes from Sikes’ scathing critique, published on The Clash Daily: “I can only imagine the difficulty of waking up in a 12,000 square foot Hollywood home and having your assistant retrieve your iPhone, only to see that the battery is low and someone on twitter (the social media concept that you and all of your friends contribute to on an hourly basis to feed your ego and narcissistic ways), has written a mean word or 2 about you. You’ve hit the nail on the head, war is exactly like that. You should receive a medal for the burden you have carried on your shoulders due to these meanies on social media.”

Further Backlash Over Gwyneth Paltrow's War/Internet Analogy

Gwyneth Paltrow

Cindy McCain is not the only person to have been offended by Gwyneth Paltrow's comments, published on Monday, in which she likened the dangers of internet trolls to war.

Gwyneth PaltrowGwyneth Paltrow made the comments at a technology conference on Monday.

In an interview with Clashdaily, a website and talk show which seemingly prides itself on being as butch as possible, Green Beret Bryan Sykes described the horrors he witnessed and endured whilst enlisted in the US military in Iraq.  Surely such an interview would raise awareness of the destructive nature of war, the deep psychological impact combat has on those serving in the military and the reasons behind the conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Gwyneth Paltrow Charlize Theron

While speaking to tech site Re/Code on Tuesday (25th), Gwyneth Paltrow chose to liken reading negative comments about herself online to war. Then, days later, Charlize Theron caused outrage when she compared her experiences of Googling herself to rape in an interview with Sky News. Unsurprisingly both actresses' comments have been met with a furore of online backlash with many asking how the two women could be so insensitive.

Gwyneth Paltrow's 'War' Language Too Figurative For Cindy McCain?

Gwyneth Paltrow John McCain

Perhaps making comments in which you compare the traumas of celebrity with being enrolled in the armed forces isn't the best idea around Memorial Day. But Gwyneth Paltrow wasn't remotely perturbed and blundered through a minefield (sorry Mrs McCain) of press questions at a technology conference held on Monday (27th May). The 41-year-old actress compared the constant threat of internet trolls with the prospect of going to war.

Paltrow was describing the difficulties of seeing negative comments and deliberately hurtful remarks posted online, especially as she is such a high profile figure. The most shocking break up news of the week goes to Glee star Naya Rivera and now ex-fiancee Big Sean. The pair have called it quits amid rumours of infidelity and Rolex theft. These others celebs also decided to end their very high profile engagements, although none of them accused each other of stealing expensive watches. Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck AKA Bennifer were a bit of an odd couple to even begin with. In 2003 the couple were involved in an extremely high profile relationship, going so far as to co-star in a couple of god awful movies. The engagement was broken off in 2004, allegedly because Ben wasn’t ready to give up single life. Which makes sense because a year later he married Jennifer Garner. Burnnnnn.

Inside Gwyneth Paltrow And Chris Martin's Alleged "Uncoupling Ceremony"

Gwyneth Paltrow Chris Martin

So, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin allegedly took their decision to ‘consciously uncouple’ one step further, if that’s even possible. The pair are said to have asked a Kabbalah Rabbi to officiate an ‘uncoupling ceremony’ for the pair, which took place during their ‘break-up-moon’ in the Bahamas.  We’ll ask pretty much the same question here that we asked when Gwyneth announced their split on her website GOOP. What the heck is an ‘uncoupling ceremony’? It sounds like some sort of hippy exorcism.

Gwyneth Paltrow uncoupling ceremony Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin announced the end of their marriage two weeks ago

The rabbi supposedly officiated the ceremony, which the couple chose to have on a beach in the Bahamas. They were instructed to read from a sacred book, light a fire and throw stones in to the sea. The stones were meant to symbolise the solidity of their relationship, while throwing them in the sea represented their “wandering spirits”. We’ve got to admit, as crazy as it sounds, it also sounds pretty Paltrow, so we're sort of inclined to believe there's a bit of truth to it.

Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck: Gwyneth Paltrow's Relationships Before Chris Martin

Gwyneth Paltrow Ben Affleck Brad Pitt

We were all surprised when Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin announced their separation by way of a post on Paltrow’s Goop website on Tuesday evening. The couple, who have been married for 10 years and had two children together announced they were ‘consciously uncoupling’, and thus the showbiz world began mourning another high profile couple. But for Gwyneth a high profile split is nothing new, actually she’s had her fair share of famous romances.

Gwyneth PaltrowGwyneth Paltrow has announced her 'uncoupling' from Chris Martin

Before there was Chris and before there was Angelina, Hollywood’s hottest couple was Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow. Although now the two might seem like an unlikely pairing, back in the mid nighties they were the hot couple of the moment. These two set out to define the era for star couples, sporting matching cropped blonde hair and sometimes even matching outfits, (too far). They even got engaged! Although they might have seem like a young Hollywood dream come true, sadly it wasn't to be and they split in 1997 after three years of dating. Gwyneth would later take responsibility for the break up, telling Diana Sawyer ‘My kind of internal stuff really tripped up that whole relationship and I felt really responsible, and also like I was the architect of my own misery … I just made a big mess out of it.’.

The pair released a statement, explaining, “It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate. Here she sang a rendition of Smokey Robinson’s ‘Crusin’, which would appear on the film’s soundtrack. The song was released as a single and even reached the number 1 spot on the Australian charts. The success was followed up with a cover of Kim Carnes 80's hit ‘Bette Davis Eyes’ which went to number 3. Her next on screen singing spot came in the movie ‘Infamous’, about the life of writer Truman Capote. Paltrow took a small part in the film to show off her singing skills, as a nightclub singer who performs Ella Fitzgerald's ‘What Is That Thing Called Love’.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Remember when Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter said that Gwyneth Paltrow had ‘forced [his] hand’ and that the magazine would definitely run a tell-all piece on the star? The film about a Welsh coal mining family at the turn of the century starred Maureen O’Hara and took the Oscar over Orson Welles' masterpiece. It also took the Best Director and Best Actor Awards, beating Welles in both categories.
