It's a separation which has gripped the news for almost a week but we're still no closer to knowing the truth about the inner workings of the Martin-Paltrow marriage, let alone their split. Things haven't been made any clearer either with Martin's father commenting on his son's separation from award winning actress Paltrow. Meanwhile sources suggest Paltrow's mother is less than supportive of her daughter and son-in-law's decision.

Martin's father, Antony, appears to be taking news of his son's separation well and maintains the separation was "amicable" and the two are "still great mates". However, Paltrow's mother would disagree and is less than happy about her daughter's decision to end her decade long marriage. Actress Blythe Danner, Paltrow's mother, is allegedly "really upset" sources close to the 71-year-old told Us Weekly

Danner allegedly "begged Gwyneth not to end it, that he's a good man," adding "she loves Chris".  It seems, if the reports are indeed true, Paltrow ignored her mother's advice as she and Martin announced their split on Tuesday (25th March). The source claims "Gwyneth had to do what she felt was best".

It seems the couple have attempted to continue their relationship for over a year and have even been on a trial separation. In their joint statement, posted of Paltrow's lifestyle website GOOP, the pair stated: "we have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate".

On this matter, the source said "they really tried to make it work." However, the insider claimed "you could tell something was wrong, though, over the last few months. You could see a sadness in each of their eyes".

However, their separation may not be as traumatic as news reports are suggesting as, amidst news of their break-up, Martin and Paltrow are enjoying a family holiday in the Bahamas. Sources suggest the couple are not displaying signs of physical affection but their children - Apple aged 9 and Moses aged 7 - appear to be enjoying their holiday despite their parent's separation. In the couple's statement, entitled "Conscious Uncoupling", they were keen to emphasise their continued joint support as parents, writing "we are parents first and foremost, to two incredibly wonderful children and we ask for their and our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time".

Since their split, Paltrow and Martin have thanked fans for their concern following the news published on Tuesday. In a separate GOOP post, Paltrow added on to a post about chicken recipes: "P.S. CM and I in deep gratitude for the support of so many".
