We have a sneaking suspicion that it was Gwyneth Paltrow, and not Chris Martin, who decided to label their separation a "conscious uncoupling". Why, you ask? Well, come on, it’s just a Paltrow thing to do.

The couple have decided to split after over a decade of marriage. We have to admit, we are rather sad about the news, in the world of unexpected unions they stood for a bridging of normality and celebrity, although it turns out that the two worlds really were just too far apart. The pair released a statement, explaining, “It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate. We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate.”

The post, which appeared on Paltrow’s website GOOP was titled “Conscious Uncoupling”, a term which may have provoked more reaction that the actual news itself. So what on earth is “conscious uncoupling”? Gwyneth often takes the time to preach about her various lifestyle choices, even when it comes to divorce it seems she has to do it more sophisticatedly than other people. Katherine Woodward Thomas is a psychotherapist who specialises in the practice, which she claims is a “proven process for lovingly completing a relationship that will leave you feeling whole and healed and at peace.”

To learn the art of you can take a five week online course, aimed at helping to “heal your heart, rediscover your joy and transform your life, [turning your] breakup grief into personal breakthrough.” Why can’t Gwyneth just eat a gallon of ice cream, cry over old photos and watch The Notebook over and over again like the rest of us?

Twitter users have taken to the social media site to mock the Coldplay frontman and Oscar winner’s description of their divorce. One user tweeted, “Knowing that the term “conscious uncoupling is being used by real people is detracting from my quality of life”, while another posted, “I love how Gwyneth Paltrow & Chris Martin’s announcement on GOOP (where else? is titled “Conscious Uncoupling.” *insert eye rolling here*”.

It seems that even at such a sad time Gwyneth still needs to project an image of herself as entirely in control. Although, perhaps she is and we have to admit it is reassuring to see that they plan on maintaining an amicable relationship for the sake of their children, the whole family are even said to be currently on vacation in the Bahamas. That’s certainly like no kind of impending “conscious uncoupling” that we’ve heard of before.  It turns out Paltrow can't even divorce like a pleb.
