The Edge Of Seventeen Review

Very Good

An unusually realistic teen movie, this drama gets deep under the skin of its characters, breathing new life into the genre. First-time director Kelly Fremon Craig (who previously wrote the rom-com Post Grad) has created an involving film about a teenaged girl who is easy to identify with. The script may try too hard to explain away all of her darker emotions, but it's sharp and entertaining.

Hailee Steinfeld stars as Nadine, a 17-year-old in Portland, Oregon. On the fringe of the popular kids at school, she feels like a loser who doesn't deserve to live. And she can't cope with the fact that her best pal Krista (Haley Lu Richardson) has fallen for her irritatingly popular big brother Darian (Blake Jenner). It certainly doesn't help that her mother Mona (Kyra Sedgwick) is an emotional wreck, or that Nadine is being pursued by the class nerd Erwin (Hayden Szeto), because she's much more interested in bad boy Nick (Alexander Calvert). In need of someone to talk to, she turns to her grouchy history teacher Mr Bruner (Woody Harrelson), who refuses to indulge in her angst. But he's also the only person who actually listens to her.

Steinfeld is terrific in the role, bringing an endearing raw authenticity to a character who isn't hugely likeable. As Nadine ruthlessly insults everyone around her, Steinfeld quietly reveals the sensitive soul inside, which adds a blast of complexity to her scenes with the superbly restrained Harrelson, Sedgwick and Jenner. All of these relationships are difficult and often startlingly realistic, as is the depiction of high school peer pressure. As Nadine's classmates, Richardson has a wonderfully twisty role as her childhood bestie who has apparently betrayed her trust, while Szeto steals his scenes as the hilariously awkward Erwin.

The trailers may make it look like another lively comedy, but Steinfeld says viewers are in for "an honest telling of being a teenager and growing up".

She says that reading the script was her first clue that this was going to be different. "I remember feeling like I've experienced so much of what this character has gone through, and in no way have ever been able to express it," she says. "It speaks to the idea of once you become one with yourself and who you are, nothing else really matters."

Pitch Perfect 2 - Super Bowl TV Spot

The Barden Bellas are back after their impressive victory in a national a cappella chorus competition, where they proved the strength of girl power over some of the biggest choirs in the country. Beca, Emily, Chloe, Aubrey, Cynthia-Rose, Stacie, Lilly, Jessica and Fat Amy have got bigger fish to fry these days, as they eye up global competition ahead of the daunting international contest. They may have bags of confidence, but as no American chorus has ever managed to land the coveted prize before, it may not be enough to get them through this time. Nonetheless, it's time these girls tested their odds against the greatest collective voices on the planet, even if their new rivals are showing some seemingly matchless talent.

The Homesman Trailer

George Briggs is a claim jumper who has only ever known a dishonest life. When he finds himself in serious trouble (sat astride an impatient horse with his hands bound behind his back and a noose around his neck tied to a branch), he starts to think this could finally be the end for him. That is until he is found by a lone woman with a wagon named Mary Bee Cuddy who agrees to free him from his plight in exchange for a favour. Living alone, she is struggling to carry out an important personal mission; she wants to take three insane women from Nebraska to Iowa now that their husbands can now longer cope with them. Thus, she asks Briggs to help her on the dangerous five week journey and, despite his serious reservations, he agrees to act as her aide and protector against the brutalities they may face along the way.

Excellent

Fans of the Oscar-winning 2006 Irish film Once (and its more recent stage-musical adaptation) may find this American drama a little derivative, but it's a strong story in its own right. This time writer-director John Carney has assembled a starry cast to nicely capture the rhythms of New York's streets. And the songs, while not quite as integral to the story, are gorgeous.

The opening sequence sets up the story from two perspectives, as music producer Dan (Mark Ruffalo) hears songwriter Greta (Keira Knightley) reluctantly perform at a bar's open-mic night. Both of these people are at their rope's end: always seeking offbeat talent, Dan is on the outs with his record label partner (Yasiin Bey, aka Mos Def), and wants to reconnect with his estranged wife and teen daughter (Catherine Keener and Hailee Steinfeld). Meanwhile, Greta has just been dumped by her rising pop-star boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine), who got his big break from a song she wrote. To stop her moping, her pal Steve (James Corden) encourages her to start singing her own songs. In Greta, Dan sees the kind of artist he longs to make records with, so with nothing to lose the two set out to record her songs at locations around the city for a new album.

Like Once, this is a love story that doesn't actually involve romance: these two people need each other to discover their life's passions. So Ruffalo and Knightley get the chance to create some terrific chemistry without much of a threat that they'll fall for each other. Indeed, each has other fish to fry, as they try to sort out their emotional connections elsewhere. Their flirty friendship plays out in a fresh, effortless way that generates some complex emotions and ideas. Ruffalo is always great at creating these kinds of loose, slightly hapless characters, while Knightley delivers an even more earthy performance, letting her own sparky personality emerge on-screen for the first time along with some serious skill as a singer. And the supporting cast add texture in just the right places.

3 Days To Kill Review

Good

French filmmaker Luc Besson continues to combine family themes with intense violence (see Taken), but at least this film has a wry sense of humour about it. Director McG refuses to take the story seriously (see Charlie's Angels), balancing the escalating body count with a silly father-daughter drama to make this an enjoyably absurd guilty pleasure.

Kevin Costner stars as Ethan, a veteran CIA hitman who finds out that he's only got three months to live. So he retires and returns home to Paris to reconnect with his ex-wife Christine (Connie Nielsen) and their now-teen daughter Zooey (Hailee Steinfeld). But just as he discovers a family of immigrants squatting in his flat, the vampy CIA operative Vivi (Amber Heard) appears and coaxes him back into service for one last job, paying him with both cash and an experimental cancer treatment. So as he tracks down international arms dealers, he's also trying to bond with Zooey over three days of babysitting while Christine is away on business. But of course this is also just when the violence breaks out.

McG does a great job of cutting back and forth between these two story strands: the tetchy-sweet fatherly stuff and the action-man shootouts, car chases and fist-fights. Ethan even has to interrupt a spot of torture when Zooey gets in trouble at school. This wildly bizarre mixture of goofy sentimentality and vicious brutality takes in all of Paris' picturesque landmarks. And since this is a Luc Besson script, it's only a matter of time before the two elements merge for a big climax. Yes, everything is ludicrously predictable, but there's just enough spark to keep us entertained.

'The Homesman': Cannes 2014 Reviews Are Mostly Positive

Tommy Lee Jones Hilary Swank Meryl Streep Hailee Steinfeld William Fichtner

‘The Homesman’ is the latest film to face the critics at Cannes 2014, which has thrown out some modern classics (like ‘Mr Turner) and some true stinkers (like ‘Grace of Monaco).

The Homesman

Starring Tommy Lee Jones, Hilary Swank, Hailee Steinfeld, William Fichtner and Meryl Streep and helmed by Lee Jones in his fourth directorial effort, ‘The Homesman’ hasn’t reached one end of the critical spectrum or another, pleasing most critics but failing to excite others. This reaction has accumulated a fairly healthy 67% aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Dan Mulligan is a former record executive who has just been spectacularly dismissed by the label he was employed by. Now penniless with nowhere to go and no-one to talk to apart from his hormonal teenage daughter Violet, he is desperate to find some musicians and get his career back on track. Meanwhile, a young singer-songwriter named Gretta has just been dumped by her co-musician boyfriend Dave after he manages to secure a major label deal for himself. Depressed and alone, she finds herself performing solo on a stage at a small bar where Dan happens to be drinking. Captivated, he decides to take her under his wing and help her achieve the success she so craves with his own unusual methods, and both find themselves transforming as people in almost every way.

Formerly entitled 'Can A Song Save Your Life?', 'Begin Again' is a touching comedy drama with a thrilling all star cast. It has been written and directed by John Carney ('Once', 'On the Edge', 'Zonad', 'The Rafters'), and is the story of how music can change many people for the better - and, sometimes, for the worst. The film is due for UK release this summer on July 11th 2014.

Ender's Game Review

Very Good

Since this entire story centres on virtual-reality gaming, it's tricky to feel any sense of what's at stake here. But a strong cast and above-average effects work help hold our interest until the requisite dramatic shift takes hold. Along the way, the movie explores some punchy issues such as the nature of true leadership and the morality of war.

It's set in a distant future: Earth has regrouped after an alien invasion, turning to children to harness their quick gaming reflexes and inner fearlessness. Ender (Butterfield) is a 12-year-old who's sure he'll crash out of training like his older sister Valentine (Breslin). But Colonel Graff (Ford) and Major Anderson (Davis) see something in him and send him on to battle school in an orbiting space station. As he shows true leadership potential and a sharp mind for warfare, he's promoted even further, training with iconic hero Rackham (Kingsley) on one of the aliens' former planets. And as he approaches his final exam, there's the sense that the fate of Earth hangs in the balance.

Yes, everything Ender does throughout his training is game related, either with digitally created environments or in a weightless battle globe with other cadets. This adds huge possibilities for the script to grapple with moral issues as Ender faces some staggering decisions. But since it's just a simulation, does it really mean anything? Thankfully, Butterfield is a terrific actor who lends the character a steely interior life that catches our interest. And being surrounded by the terrific Ford, Kingsley and Davis helps. As do some intriguing fellow recruits played by Steinfeld, Arias and others.

'Romeo And Juliet' Released: Worth The Reboot?

Douglas Booth Hailee Steinfeld Julian Fellowes Damian Lewis

The news that there was a planned new Romeo and Juliet movie was initially akin to learning that there was a new Dracula in the works, sparking cries of "Another one?", "Again?" Rightly so; Baz Luhrmann's 1996 memorable adaptation of William Shakespeare's 16th century tragedy certainly set the precedent for sexing up the Bard to bring the iambic pentameter to a generation of short attention spans.

Watch The 'Romeo And Juliet' Trailer:

This time, the story is set in Verona, rather than LA, and Juliet Capulet is played by the Oscar-nominated Hailee Steinfeld alongside Douglas Booth as Romeo Montague and Ed Westwick as Tybalt. Damian Lewis and Natascha McElhone play Lord and Lady Capulet. A solid cast indeed, but could the staging stand up?

Ender's Game: Orson Scott Card's Homophobic Statements Cause LGBT To Boycott Movie

Harrison Ford Abigail Breslin Asa Butterfield Hailee Steinfeld

While Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game has become a favorite in the geek community, with a movie adaptation due out this November, the author’s personal views have enraged quite a lot of people. With Card having voiced homophobic opinions in the past, LGBT organisation Geeks Out is urging its supporters to boycott the Summit film when it comes out.

Harrison Ford, CinemaCon
Ford and co. are set to promote the film at Comic-Con

"Do not buy a ticket at the theater, do not purchase the DVD, do not watch it on-demand. Ignore all merchandise and toys. However much you may have admired his books, keep your money out of Orson Scott Card’s pockets," the organization writes on its "Skip Ender's Game" website. Meanwhile, Summit plans to hold a panel on Ender’s Game at this year’s Comic-Con, featuring castmembers Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld and Abigail Breslin. While Geeks Out maintains that seeing the film would only help line the author’s pockets, insiders at the studio have already begun to distance themselves from card’s views. “Orson's politics are not reflective of the moviemakers,” one person involved with the film told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year. “We’re adapting a work, not a person. The work will stand on its own.”

He is forced to leave his friends and family and join the Battle School in outer space, but his aptitude throughout all the challenges he is faced with has him upgraded by Colonel Graff to the prestigious Command School under the supervision of war hero Mazer Rackham. He is unaware, however, of just how much hope is being put on him to be Earth's saviour and his ability to make the right difficult decision leaves him with a sense of bitter self-loathing.

New Trailer Revealed For 'Romeo And Juliet', Starring Douglas Booth (Trailer & Pictures)

Douglas Booth Hailee Steinfeld Paul Giamatti Damian Lewis Ed Westwick Julian Fellowes Zola Jesus

Douglas Booth as Romeo and Hailee Steinfeld as Juliet in Romeo And JulietDouglas Both as Romeo and Hailee Steinfeld as Juliet in Romeo And Juliet

It’s been a while since anyone’s attempted to pull off a film adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic doomed love story Romeo & Juliet. We suspect it’s because Baz Luhrmann did such a bang up job of it back in the 90’s that many have been simply too terrified to try and better it. However, with Douglas Booth and Paul Giamatti among the stars, director Carlo Carlei is probably confident that his 2013 version of the ancient play has the chops to do the original script justice especially with the Oscar winning 'Downton Abbey' creator Julian Fellowes adapting the screenplay.

Featuring the welcome voice of Zola Jesus on the backing soundtrack, the extended trailer for Carlei’s work has been revealed and apart from revealing that almost all the young actors in it are impossibly pretty, it also has a touch of a gothic feel about it, with dark shades adorning most of the clips shown and the infamous masked ball focused on as the first place the pair meet. 'Gossip Girl' star Ed Westwick also makes an appearance in the movie as the vengeful cousin of Juliet, Tybalt in his first role since leaving the show.

Juliet, meanwhile, is being forced to marry another man against her wishes. Blinded by her misery, she accepts the help of Friar Laurence who offers to help her fake her own death so that she and Romeo may elope.
