The Edge Of Seventeen Review

Very Good

An unusually realistic teen movie, this drama gets deep under the skin of its characters, breathing new life into the genre. First-time director Kelly Fremon Craig (who previously wrote the rom-com Post Grad) has created an involving film about a teenaged girl who is easy to identify with. The script may try too hard to explain away all of her darker emotions, but it's sharp and entertaining.

Hailee Steinfeld stars as Nadine, a 17-year-old in Portland, Oregon. On the fringe of the popular kids at school, she feels like a loser who doesn't deserve to live. And she can't cope with the fact that her best pal Krista (Haley Lu Richardson) has fallen for her irritatingly popular big brother Darian (Blake Jenner). It certainly doesn't help that her mother Mona (Kyra Sedgwick) is an emotional wreck, or that Nadine is being pursued by the class nerd Erwin (Hayden Szeto), because she's much more interested in bad boy Nick (Alexander Calvert). In need of someone to talk to, she turns to her grouchy history teacher Mr Bruner (Woody Harrelson), who refuses to indulge in her angst. But he's also the only person who actually listens to her.

Steinfeld is terrific in the role, bringing an endearing raw authenticity to a character who isn't hugely likeable. As Nadine ruthlessly insults everyone around her, Steinfeld quietly reveals the sensitive soul inside, which adds a blast of complexity to her scenes with the superbly restrained Harrelson, Sedgwick and Jenner. All of these relationships are difficult and often startlingly realistic, as is the depiction of high school peer pressure. As Nadine's classmates, Richardson has a wonderfully twisty role as her childhood bestie who has apparently betrayed her trust, while Szeto steals his scenes as the hilariously awkward Erwin.

Hailee Steinfeld

The trailers may make it look like another lively comedy, but Steinfeld says viewers are in for "an honest telling of being a teenager and growing up".

She says that reading the script was her first clue that this was going to be different. "I remember feeling like I've experienced so much of what this character has gone through, and in no way have ever been able to express it," she says. "It speaks to the idea of once you become one with yourself and who you are, nothing else really matters."

When Marnie Was There Review

Very Good

Japan's Studio Gibli has been responsible for some of the finest animated movies in recent decades, from 2003's Oscar-winning Spirited Away to last year's beautiful The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. Now adapted by Disney with a starry Western voice cast, their films are reaching a wider audience. And this remarkably moving drama shows how complex an animated movie should be, skilfully grappling with grown-up themes through a child's perspective.

The story comes from the Joan G. Robinson novel about Anna (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld in the English-language version), a 12-year-old who lives in Sapporo with her foster mother Yoriko (Geena Davis). But Anna isn't like the other giggly girls at school, and after an asthma attack, she moves to the countryside to live with Aunt Setsu and Uncle Kiyomasa (Grey Griffin and John C. Reilly). They give her plenty of space to explore the area, and when she spots an abandoned seaside mansion, she is unexpectedly drawn to it, befriending Marnie (Kiernan Skipka), the free-spirited girl who lives there. Anna understands that Marnie is an imaginary friend, then is surprised to find Marnie's diary hidden behind a bookshelf in the rambling house.

The twisty plot incorporates a range of elements that keep the audience off-balance: Is this a ghost story? Is Anna mentally unstable because of her difficult background? But the film is much deeper than that, and as Anna takes a fiercely original journey to self-discovery, the film touches on all kinds of resonant themes. For example, Anna struggles with her self-image, never believing that she's a talented artist, although she clearly is. This has left her feeling like no one else likes her either. So it's both fascinating and moving to watch her blossoming relationships with both the young girl Sayaka (Ava Acres) and the older woman Hisako (Vanessa Williams) who paints by the seaside. Both offer emotional insight into Anna's story.

When Marnie Was There is another superb addition to Ghibli's well-loved catalogue, receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature this year.

10,000 Saints Trailer

Jude gets the surprise of his life when his biological father Les shows up at his adoptive mother's house in Vermont, ready to take him to Manhattan and become a real father to him. Jude is reluctant, given his father's questionable lifestyle and his drug-dealing ways, but the prospect of re-connecting with his friends Eliza and Johnny is tempting. Jude has more reason than most to hate the way his father makes money; it's not long since the death of his friend Teddy, who overdosed after a night out; and it's made even worse now that Les is in a relationship with Eliza's rich English mother Di. He has one escape though; his passion for straight-edge hardcore punk is at an all-time high and now that he's back with his friends, he can seize his guitar and play away the angst. Unfortunately, his peace isn't very long-lasting, because Eliza has one bombshell to drop that no-one was expecting - and it's going to change everything.

'Romeo And Juliet' Released: Worth The Reboot?

Douglas Booth Hailee Steinfeld Julian Fellowes Damian Lewis

The news that there was a planned new Romeo and Juliet movie was initially akin to learning that there was a new Dracula in the works, sparking cries of "Another one?", "Again?" Rightly so; Baz Luhrmann's 1996 memorable adaptation of William Shakespeare's 16th century tragedy certainly set the precedent for sexing up the Bard to bring the iambic pentameter to a generation of short attention spans.

Watch The 'Romeo And Juliet' Trailer:

This time, the story is set in Verona, rather than LA, and Juliet Capulet is played by the Oscar-nominated Hailee Steinfeld alongside Douglas Booth as Romeo Montague and Ed Westwick as Tybalt. Damian Lewis and Natascha McElhone play Lord and Lady Capulet. A solid cast indeed, but could the staging stand up?

Ender's Game: Orson Scott Card's Homophobic Statements Cause LGBT To Boycott Movie

Harrison Ford Abigail Breslin Asa Butterfield Hailee Steinfeld

While Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game has become a favorite in the geek community, with a movie adaptation due out this November, the author’s personal views have enraged quite a lot of people. With Card having voiced homophobic opinions in the past, LGBT organisation Geeks Out is urging its supporters to boycott the Summit film when it comes out.

Harrison Ford, CinemaCon
Ford and co. are set to promote the film at Comic-Con

"Do not buy a ticket at the theater, do not purchase the DVD, do not watch it on-demand. Ignore all merchandise and toys. However much you may have admired his books, keep your money out of Orson Scott Card’s pockets," the organization writes on its "Skip Ender's Game" website. Meanwhile, Summit plans to hold a panel on Ender’s Game at this year’s Comic-Con, featuring castmembers Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld and Abigail Breslin. While Geeks Out maintains that seeing the film would only help line the author’s pockets, insiders at the studio have already begun to distance themselves from card’s views. “Orson's politics are not reflective of the moviemakers,” one person involved with the film told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year. “We’re adapting a work, not a person. The work will stand on its own.”

Douglas Booth as Romeo and Hailee Steinfeld as Juliet in Romeo And JulietDouglas Both as Romeo and Hailee Steinfeld as Juliet in Romeo And Juliet

It’s been a while since anyone’s attempted to pull off a film adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic doomed love story Romeo & Juliet. We suspect it’s because Baz Luhrmann did such a bang up job of it back in the 90’s that many have been simply too terrified to try and better it. However, with Douglas Booth and Paul Giamatti among the stars, director Carlo Carlei is probably confident that his 2013 version of the ancient play has the chops to do the original script justice especially with the Oscar winning 'Downton Abbey' creator Julian Fellowes adapting the screenplay.

Featuring the welcome voice of Zola Jesus on the backing soundtrack, the extended trailer for Carlei’s work has been revealed and apart from revealing that almost all the young actors in it are impossibly pretty, it also has a touch of a gothic feel about it, with dark shades adorning most of the clips shown and the infamous masked ball focused on as the first place the pair meet. 'Gossip Girl' star Ed Westwick also makes an appearance in the movie as the vengeful cousin of Juliet, Tybalt in his first role since leaving the show.

They meet and fall immediately in love when Romeo sneaks into the Capulet family ball and they soon vow to be married. Unfortunately, their happy matrimony does not last long when Romeo is forced to kill a relative of hers who challenges him and he is subsequently banished from Verona. Juliet, meanwhile, is being forced to marry another man against her wishes. Blinded by her misery, she accepts the help of Friar Laurence who offers to help her fake her own death so that she and Romeo may elope. However, after a cruel twist of fate, Romeo fails to receive word of the plan and discovers his wife apparently dead in her tomb. The grief that ensues becomes the deadly fate for this star-crossed couple.
