Newcomers Pip Anderson and Crystal Clarke have become the latest additions to the Star Wars Episode VII cast, after beating out 67,000 other hopefuls. Last year 67,000 hopefuls from 11 cities and across the internet responded to an open casting call for a part in Jj Abrams’ sequel. While some thought it was just a publicity stunt, the idea of casting unknowns is nothing new to the franchise. It’s actually something Star Wars prides itself on, remember back in 1977 Mark Hamil was an unknown name.

With the announcement of Andersen and Clarke’s casting, Lucasfilm president and producer of the film, Kathleen Kennedy, said, “The Star Wars universe has always been about discovering and nurturing young talent and in casting Episode VII we wanted to remain absolutely faithful to this tradition.” Adding that they were “delighted that so many travelled to see us at the open casting calls and that we have been able to make Crystal and Pip a part of the film.”

Clarke is a young American actress who is currently studying acting in Glasgow, Scotland. She’s said to be a regular on the stage and will soon make her feature film debut in The Moon and the Sun. The movie, directed by Sean McNamara, is due out next year (before Episode VII) and will also star Pierce Brosnan, William Hurt and Kaya Scodelario.
