Eye In The Sky Offered Helen Mirren A New Challenge

Helen Mirren

But she clearly has a more mischievous, adventurous side, as evidenced in her sassy turn in Trumbo or her action-comedy series RED. Now she's adding war movies to her repertoire with the drone-strike thriller Eye in the Sky.

Helen Mirren plays a Colonel in the film

In the film, she plays Colonel Katherine Powell, a British officer in command of a top-secret mission using drones to capture terrorists in East Africa. The character was written for a man, but director Gavin Hood (Ender's Game) immediately saw Mirren in the role.

Trumbo Review

Excellent

An entertaining film about sobering true events, this is the story of notorious screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, who defied McCarthy's communist witch-hunt hearings in the late-1940s and was blacklisted by Hollywood for more than a decade. As written by John McNamara and directed by Jay Roach, the film is bright, funny and emotionally resonant, clearly simplified to make it more involving. And with such a terrific cast on board, it's both revealing and a lot of fun.

In 1947, Dalton (Bryan Cranston) is the film industry's top-paid screenwriter, so of course Senator McCarthy's House Un-American Activities Commission goes after him about his rumoured links to the communist party during the war. But he and nine fellow writers refuse to testify, so they're imprisoned for contempt, denied work by the Hollywood studios and targeted personally by the powerful gossip columnist Hedda Hopper (Helen Mirren). To survive, Dalton begins writing under a series of pseudonyms for the B-movie producer Frank King (John Goodman), creating a script factory in his home with the help of his wife Cleo (Diane Lane) and daughter Niki (Elle Fanning). Two of these screenplays win Oscars, and it isn't until Dalton begins writing Spartacus in 1960 that actor Kirk Douglas (Dean O'Gorman) breaks the studio blacklist.

Roach directs this story in a sunny, snappy way that includes lots of smart wordplay and a clear sense of the us-or-them mentality that has defined America since the Cold War. People need a villain to hiss at, so anyone with even a passing connection to communism will do. And Mirren hisses better than most. Her performance is riotously funny and relentlessly nasty at the same time. More textured characters include Louis C.K. as a fellow writer and Michael Stuhlbarg as conflicted actor Edward G. Robinson. All of the actors are excellent, anchored by Cranston's wonderfully prickly Oscar-nominated turn as a bullheaded man who hilariously seizes every opportunity to make an inspiring speech.

Dame Helen Mirren Says It's "Unfair" To Attack The Oscars Over Diversity Row

Helen Mirren Idris Elba Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences

Former Oscar winner Dame Helen Mirren has mounted a defence of the Academy over its much publicised lack of diversity in its nominations, saying that it’s “unfair” to attack them when the real problem lies elsewhere in the industry.

The English screen icon, who stars in the Oscar-nominated movie Trumbo, was speaking to Jon Snow of Channel 4 News when she was asked whether the Academy and the industry were “behind the times” for not nominating a single black actor for the second year in a row.

Mirren said she felt it was “unfair to attack the Academy” and that “it just so happened it went that way” this year.

Drones are now one of the most effective weapons the military have when fighting in battle. Their surveillance abilities are incredibly high quality and make it much easier to find and target individuals who are wanted.

Colonel Katherine Powell has been given a mission to go and find and capture an ex-British citizen who's become an extremist and is meeting with some of the men on the most wanted list. Having been previously connected to a series of suicide bombings, the Colonel tracks down the woman (currently going under the new Ayesha Al-Hady) and makes contact with her superiors to let them know her progress.

Using a multitude of surveillance equipment, Powell soon becomes privy to the terrorists next plans, she discovers that the bombers are planning another imminent attack. Placed in an impossible situation, Powell and her bosses must decide how to complete the mission without the loss of civilian life.

Helen Mirren is not a woman to turn down difficult roles. She has, after all, played three different Queens of the United Kingdom and, in a voice part, the Queen of Egypt. Yet there is nothing 69-year-old Mirren would like more than to star in a Fast and Furious film and do her own driving stunts.

This week has been a rough time to live on Earth in general, but the raw wound is still the horrific attack that took place in Paris. Even the stars walking the Golden Globes red carpet had to acknowledge the tragedy and show support.

Amal Alamuddin

Many of them did so by wearing the Je Suis Charlie slogan on their arrival at the show. Amal Clooney said that she was wearing Dior, "customized in solidarity with the French people who've gone through a terrible week," according to Elle magazine. A "Je suis Charlie" badge was displayed on her purse, while her husband, George Clooney, also wore a similar button, according to ABC News.

"Guardians" May Have Saved The Galaxy, But They Can't Hold On To The Box Office

Chris Pratt Zoe Saldana Megan Fox Helen Mirren

So here’s some news: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles just breezed past Guardians of the Galaxy to the top of the box office. Yes, you can go back and read that again. The new addition to the TMNT franchise has taken a Turtle-worthy beating in reviews over the past week, but that didn’t stop it from beating the critically and fan-acclaimed Guardians, after the Marvel flick has spent just one week on top.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Why though?

The new and improved (well, new anyway) Turtles raked in $65 million on its first weekend, while Guardians checked in at just $41,5. Unfortunately, this doesn’t even top the market analysts’ predictions for TMNT, which largely underestimated the potential of grown-up Ninja Turtles fans, predicting a slow start with around $45 million. According to USA Today says that 55% of moviegoers were 25 or older, a surprisingly mature demographic. Not so surprisingly, 61% of the audience was male, Paramount says. 'The film obviously had greater-than-expected appeal to nostalgic parents," says Rentrak's Paul Dergarabedian. At this point, we won’t add the obligatory “No ----, Sherlock” comment, but feel free to do it in your mind.

Cate Blanchett really wanted to commemorate her Oscar win on Sunday, and what better more permanent way is there then getting yourself a tattoo? The actress was seen leaving a tattoo parlour with a bandage on her wrist opening speculation as to what special ink the ‘Blue Jasmine’ star might have had done. While we were a little surprised at the image of Cate getting tattooed she’s not the only celeb sporting some unlikely ink.

Firstly none other thank Dame Helen Mirren has gone under the tattoo needle. The actress sports some ink on her left thumb of all places. The Dame said she got it when she was very drunk, a long time ago before tattoos were cool and mainstream, which is why she hates it now. She told ‘Good Morning America’ back in 2010 "I was very, very drunk. It was a very, very long time ago, when only sailors and Hell's Angels were tattooed, honestly, and prisoners. And I decided to get a tattoo because it was the most shocking thing I could think of doing." Seems Helen was always ahead of her time.

Man of Steel came third in the weekend's rankings at half of the Monsters University takings at $41.2 million (£27m).

Super Helen Mirren Can’t Do Voice Overs!

Helen Mirren

As a national treasure, we’re used to the idea that Helen Mirren can do pretty much everything. Not just within the world of acting, either; we reckon she could comfortably run the country or throw grapes in her mouth seamlessly.

So we were shocked to find out that there’s something she can’t do: voiceovers. Although, she’s the one who said she’s “hopeless” so we’ll bet she’s probablu better than most. “It’s a learning process and they do it so brilliantly,” she said of John Goodman and Billy Crystal as she watched them act out their parts for Monsters University, which she is set to star in, vocally, that is. Mirren plays a scary headmaster, something she has some experience in, as she remembers being terrified of hers. “She gave me the best advice – the worst thing about fear is fear itself. She was scary but ultimately wise,” she explains. “It’s very annoying to go though life watching people who never seem to be challenged, and who just get everything they want without having to work for it,” she adds, saying that the film’s premise is based on that idea.

Time For A Female Dr. Who? We Think So! But Who Could It Be?

Helen Mirren Sue Perkins

The BBC, as a publically funded broadcaster, has to represent the changing attitudes of a nation. And this nation wants a female Dr. Who, so who could fill those time-travelling boots?

Well Helen Mirren would love to do it, and as a genuine British icon, she certainly would be a popular choice. “I would like to play the new female Doctor Who. I don’t want to just be his sidekick,” she explained to The Daily Star a while back, in 2011. Sue Perkins – host of The Great British Bake Off and half of Mel and Sue – would be another popular choice. The news that Matt Smith – a great Dr. Who – was to leave the franchise was followed by a Twitter Campaign to get her the part. We think she’d be a good choice, too, but perhaps not as good as Tilda Swinton, who would bring a wealth of acting at the very top to the role. Considering she learnt to speak Italian in a Russian accent for her character in I Am Love, we’re pretty confident she to step to any challenges the role of The Dr would bring.

Dame Helen Mirren Says She Would 'Do The Same Again' After Drummer Outburst

Helen Mirren

Dame Helen Mirren well and truly went against character during a recent performance as Queen Elizabeth II in the stage show The Audience, when she stormed from the stage to yell at a group of street drummers outside the Gielgud Theatre in London's West End for making too much noise. A somewhat mortified Dame Helen has since apologised for the incident and shown support for the cause the drummers were making such a racket about, but admitted that she would gladly do the same again if needed to.

The actress gave out a statement, wearing a t-shirt promoting the One in the Park festival; a LGBT festival held in east London that the drummers were attempting to promote, in which she said; "I was very upset, I was very cross. I had just spent 10 minutes on stage trying to allow the audience to hear what I was saying, which was sort of impossible. I was steaming."

Dame Helen Mirren Eclipsed By 'Curious Incident' At Olivier Awards

Helen Mirren

It’s rare that Dame Helen Mirren is left in the shadows, but that’s exactly what happened at the annual Olivier Awards as – despite taking the best actress award – she had to take a seat while The Curious Incident of The Dog in the Night-Time took a whopping seven out of the eight awards it was nominated for.

The play was an adaptation of the best-selling novel written by Simon Stephens which is running until 2014; director Marianne Elliott commented "It was an experimental journey, and like War Horse, we could not have done it anywhere else other than a properly subsidized theatre, because it was a risk." Elliott was also named best director and she added  "Everyone, including the creative team, were working outside their comfort zones. You have to be allowed to take risks and that means being allowed to fail and that means being allowed to try new things."

Mirren was the highest profile star there, and was awarded for her portrayal of The Queen – again. Others honoured included Michael Frayn, who was given a special Olivier Award and said "Producers on the whole expect writers to cut their teeth in the subsidised theatre. When I began, I was nursed along by Michael Codron - one of the greatest West End producers - who took a chance on that first show. It was private producers who brought playwrights on - that happens much less now."

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time became the second consecutive play to bring home a massive haul of seven trophies at the Olivier Awards, with the stage adaption of Mark Haddon’s bestselling novel recreating the feat achieved by Matilda last year. It's success provided little opertunity for other successes on the night, except in the case of stage queen Helen Mirren, who came home with a Best Actress win as Queen Elizabeth II in The Audience.

Top Hat - the stage re-imagining of the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers musical from 1935 - managed to take home Best New Musical, but it was TCIotDitN-T that finished as the main talking point of the night, winning all the top awards (bar Best Actress) including Best New Play, Best Director for Marianne Elliott and Best Actor for Luke Treadaway, 28, for his depiction of the 15-year-old, Asperger's suffering protagonist. The serious nature of the show meant that it was unable to score a win in the musical category, with A Chorus Line (Best Supporting Role - Leigh Zimmerman), Top Hat (Best New Play, Choreography) and Sweeney Todd (Best Actor - Michael Ball, Actress - Imelda Staunton, Revival) sharing the spoils. In the opera category, Einstein on the Beach took home Best New Opera and Bryan Hymel took home the Outstanding Achievement Award for his roles in Les Troyens, Robert Le Diable and Rusalka.

Dame Helen Mirren Hints At Sam Mendes Sexism At Empire Awards

Helen Mirren Sam Mendes

Dame Helen Mirren doesn’t indulge herself in any sort of beef too often, so when she does you tend to listen, as it’s normally based on some pretty solid foundations. So what, then, of her Empire Awards acceptance speech, where she lambasted Sam Mendes, suggesting slightly cryptically that he might be sexist?

According to The Guardian, Mirren’s issue with the Skyfall director after he’d listed an exclusively male set of influences upon picking up his best director award on stage, neglecting any female film makers. When it came to Mirren to pick her Legend award, she took to the stage and said in her acceptance speech "I don't want to unduly pick on Sam Mendes, but when he spoke about his inspirations earlier this evening, I'm afraid not a single one of the people he mentioned was a woman.” Receiving cheers from the audience. "Hopefully in five or 10 years, when Sam's successor is collecting their Inspiration award, the list will be slightly more balanced in terms of its sexual make-up. In the meantime, this one is for the girls."

It was a surprisingly direct attack from the much-celebrated actress, though maybe Mendes wasn’t thinking about the gender of these film makers when it came to listing his influences, and was simply listing those he admired? That said, maybe Mirren wasn't attacking him per se, more that his choices reflected the difference in equality that has been and still arguably is an issue in Hollywood even in 2013. Elsewhere at the fan-voted for awards, Martin Freeman took the best actor award for his role in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, while Jennifer Lawrence took best actress for The Hunger Games.

Whilst she was no longer sporting that pink hair she took to the BAFTAs with her, the 67-year-old stage and screen icon still managed to keep all eyes on her when she took to the stage to accept her award and duly began to accuse Sam Mendes (who had just picked up the Best Director gong for Skyfall) of being sexist. Well, kind of anyway. What really happened was this: Sam had just picked up his award and thanked some of his director-contemporaries who helped him get to where he is today, including Paul Thomas Anderson, François Truffaut, Martin Scorsese and Ingmar Bergman. Helen responded to his appraisals in her own speech, saying: “I don’t want to unduly pick on Sam Mendes, but when he spoke about his inspirations earlier this evening, I’m afraid not a single one of the people he mentioned was a woman."

Helen Mirren The Queen Of Acting Once More On First Night Of The Audience

Helen Mirren

Chuffing Helen Mirren, is there any point when she isn’t playing the Queen? Ok, ok so admittedly she’s only played Queen Lizzie, like, twice. That’s still twice more than anyone at Contactmusic has though.

This time Mirren has been playing Queen Elizabeth II in the play The Audience. You’ll all of course remember that her previous outing as the royal came in The Queen, which saw her take the Oscar for best actress in the 2006 awards. So she’s got pedigree in this role, and so it’s perhaps no surprise that she’s received a stonking review of her appearance on the West End in London by the Daily Telegraph.

"What’s remarkable is that Mirren is unobtrusively changed on stage into different costumes and wigs to suggest different periods of her reign and is almost eerily persuasive whatever age she is playing” writes the Telegraph’s theatre critics Charles Spencer of her performance, while he also went on to praise the play as a whole, writing as well "Stephen Daldry directs a pitch-perfect production, with a truly palatial design by Bob Crowley. And yes, there are real Corgis on stage, too."

You Can Be Queen, Again: Helen Mirren Impresses Critics With 'The Audience'

Helen Mirren

Helen Mirren’s Oscar-winning performance as Queen Elizabeth in the 2006 movie The Queen made her an obvious choice to tackle the same role in the West End play The Audience. The play opened last night (March 5, 2013) at London’s Gielgud Theatre, where it will run until June 15.

The debut performance was attended by such luminaries as Sir David Frost, David Milliband, Tom Hooper, Sheila Hancock and Gemma Arterton, the BBC reports.

The Audience, directed by Stephen Daldry and written by Peter Morgan (who also wrote the screenplay for The Queen), imagines a number of private meetings between Queen Elizabeth II and the various prime ministers that have been in office during her 60 year reign.

Gemma Arterton, BAFTAS, 2013If Looks Could Kill! Gemma Arterton Eyes Up Young Actress Juno Temple

The Hollywood glitterati must have wondered why they’d bothered to turn up for the BAFTAs at the Royal Opera House in London on Sunday night (February 10, 2013). On a frankly dismal evening in the nation’s capital, umbrellas were commonplace on the red-carpet with publicists, media types and event organisers running around like headless chickens, hastily attempting to give the press pack their photographs without drowning the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Jennifer Chastain and Helen Mirren in the cold British rain and sleet. Best pals George Clooney and Ben Affleck were seen taking shelter under the same umbrella, while actress Gemma Arterton looked absolutely freezing as she waited for up-and-coming star Juno Temple to finish working it for the cameras.

In terms of awards, it was a relatively straight-forward evening, hosted with typical panache by everyone’s favourite Briton, Stephen Fry. Ang Lee’s Life of Pi performed strongly in the technical categories – as it is expected to do at the Oscars later this month – while Skyfall won Best British Film. However, it was Ben Affleck’s Argo that took the evening’s key prize – that of Best Picture – leaving Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln to settle for Best Actor, for the peerless Daniel Day-Lewis. Best Actress went to the 85-year-old Emmanuelle Riva, which left Jennifer Lawrence and Silver Linings Playbook director David O’Russell looking quite frankly bemused.

We look at Oscar-nominated animated romp Wreck-it Ralph and Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren in Hitchcock

Awards season continues to crank up with Argo taking the lead in the homestretch. Ben Affleck's true 1970s thriller has won the top prizes at the actors, producers and directors guilds, which makes it the favourite to win Best Picture on Oscar night February 24th, even though Affleck isn't nominated as Best Director. On the other hand, he is up for director, as well as film and actor, in this Sunday's British Academy Film Awards, better known as the Baftas.

This weekend also sees the release of the season's final awards-contending titles in the UK, including Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren in Hitchcock and the Oscar-nominated animated romp Wreck-it Ralph. There are also two acclaimed foreign films: Pablo Larrain's inventive Oscar-nominated political black comedy No, and the gorgeous Japanese drama I Wish.

Dame Helen Mirren was among a star-studded guest list at the Palm Springs International Film Festival over the weekend (January 5-6, 2013)

It might not be mentioned in the same breath as the Oscars or the Golden Globes, but one look at the red carpet of the Palm Springs International Film Festival would be enough to dupe you into thinking that you were at either. That's because a huge raft of stars made an early appearance in this season's awards ceremony run, including Dame Helen Mirren, Ben Affleck, Bradley Cooper, Naomi Watts and Helen Hunt.

Palm Springs Film Festival Gala Offers A Glimpse Into Award Season

Sally Field Helen Mirren Helen Hunt Bradley Cooper Ben Affleck

Yesterday (January 6) saw Palm Springs as the setting of a lavish gala, marking the city’s own festival.

It’s something of a dress rehearsal for award season, and the Hollywood big-names in attendance took it as such. Attendees included actor-turned-director Ben Affleck, Naomi Watts, Helen Hunt, Bradley Cooper and many more. While some stars dazzled with their outfits, others rehearsed their award speeches for the biggies – the Golden Globes and Academy Awards. One such heavy-weight was Helen Mirren, who gave thanks in more than half a dozen different languages.

Another highlight of the night was Sally Field’s Lifetime Achievement Award, which she was presented with by Martin Sheen onstage at the Palm Springs Convention Center. The Hollywood veteran is being pegged for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln earlier this season. On the red carpet, Field shared with reporters some of the stories from her childhood in Palm Springs. “Palm Springs will always make me smile,” she said. And while for Field the night might have been a walk down memory lane, for most others it offers a glimpse into the future – namely who and what will be the likeliest contenders for award success later this season.

Helen Mirren On Her Marriage: I'd Be Completely Horrified If Taylor Gave Me A Valentine's Card!

Helen Mirren

Don't be so shocked, Helen Mirren's apparent lack of sentiment isn't one sided. Since she's admitted to marrying for financial reasons, it comes as little surprise that her marriage isn't littered with romantic gestures.

'Taylor and I aren't remotely romantic with each other. And actually we appreciate the lack of romance in the other person," she explained to The Daily Mail about her relationship with Taylor Hackford. "I'd be completely horrified if Taylor gave me a Valentine's card! That's not our sort of relationship at all - we would pour cold water on that sort of thing." The pair were wed on New Year's Eve, 1997, but not in the throws of an all-encompassing love. "We even forget to get each other birthday presents - I'm always thinking the day before, "Oh, I must get Taylor something for his birthday." Without being corny, we try simply to be considerate to each other every day rather than lavishing each other with gifts," she says.

Several years ago, Miss Mirren admitted she only married for 'economic' reasons. She said: "In the end, with our two families becoming very close, there was no longer any reason for us not to be married. And anyway, the estate laws of both our countries preferred us to be married. It was never my intention to marry anybody. Economics are basically the only reason to get married, but I'm very glad I did it."

The Golden Globes Nominations, No Surprises For A Great Year Of Film

Quentin Tarantino Leonardo Dicaprio Daniel Day Lewis Rachel Weisz Naomi Watts Helen Mirren Richard Gere John Hawkes Joaquin Phoenix Denzel Washington Maggie Smith Michelle Dockery Ben Affleck Marion Cotillard Christoph Waltz Ang Lee

The Golden Globes are one of the biggest film and television awards in the world. Winning an award from them will almost always top the C.V.s of anyone involved in film. 2012 has been one of the best years in film for a long time, with many films being deemed 'instant classics'. Although, of course, that's said every year, with just a quick glance at the calibre of performances, narrative and cinematography this year it's easy to see why it's being said.

2012's nominations were revealed today with few surprises. The favourites during speculation included Argo, Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty and The Master, and they haven't failed to impress in the Globes' nominations. Lincoln's set to be a big winner with seven nominations, while Argo has 5 nominations, Zero Dark Thirty has 4 and The Master has 3. All four, except The Master, are also in the running for Best Motion Picture, competing alongside Ang Lee's Life of Pi and Quentin Tarantino's re-envisioning of a slave narrative, Django Unchained

Tarantino's film received 5 nominations, which included two in the category for Best Supporting Performance by an Actor, for Christoph Waltz and Leonardo Dicaprio, which proves to us that it's more than worth the watch. Best Director nominations mirrors the Best Motion Picture, and include Ben Affleck (Argo), Stephen Spielberg (Lincoln), Ang Lee (Life of Pi), Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty) and Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained), which is no surprise really.

Is Sacha Gervasi's 'Hitchcock' Really Generating Oscars Buzz?

Anthony Hopkins Helen Mirren Sacha Gervasi Alfred Hitchcock Daniel Day Lewis Joaquin Phoenix Denzel Washington Jennifer Lawrence Sally Field

Read anything on Sacha Gervasi's new movie Hitchcock, starring Sir Anthony Hopkins as the legendary Hollywood director, and you'll probably come across the phrases "Oscars buzz" and "Oscar tipped." The movie has enjoyed decent reviews from critics, though the press seem to have it nailed on for a nomination. It may well not be that straight forward.

History suggests that Hitchcock is the type of the movie the Academy will reward and with Hopkins and Dame Helen Mirren in the lead roles, it certainly boasts an appealing cast. However, the concluding months of 2012 have thrown up several serious contenders for the golden statuettes and Hitchcock may well be the movie to make way. Hopkins - who won Best Actor for Silence of the Lambs - has already decided to stop playing "nauseating games" with the Academy in order to win an Oscar and told Entertainment Weekly that he was too busy making films to launch a serious awards' season campaign for Hitchcock. "People go out of their way to flatter the nominating body [the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences] and I think it's kind of disgusting. Having to be nice to people and to be charming and flirting with them. That's always been against my nature", he added.

So what do the bookmakers think of Hitchcock's chances?

Hitchcock: Hit Or Miss? Let's Take A Look At The Reviews

Alfred Hitchcock Helen Mirren Anthony Hopkins

Alfred Hitchcock, one of cinema's greatest icons, has an enormous portfolio of incredible hits. He can claim North by Northwest, Hitchcock's Half Hour (which became something of an institution), The 39 Steps, The Man Who Knew Too Much, To Catch a Thief and, of course, Psycho. Every single one of them a cinematic powerhouse. However, the Gervasi Sachi biopic aptly titled Hitchcock about Hitchcock's life and work while making Psycho, is leaning dangerously close to 'miss'.

The New York Times review is truly scalding of the movie. "Hitchcock... is rather like Norman Bates, that nervous pretty boy with mommy issues and a bobbing Adam's apple, in that it too takes extravagant liberties with the dead." And adding, with a scathing flourish, "It's fluff. But while its dim fantasies about Hitchcock and the association of genius with psychosis can be written off as silly, they also smack of spiteful jealousy."

Likewise, the LA Times was not impressed. Their biggest problem with the movie is that "Its protagonists turn out to be not especially interesting and the audience is not presented any convincing reason to care about what happens in their lives." Adding, "Alfred Hitchcock would definitely not approve."

Dame Helen Mirren Not Entirely Happy With Hitchcock Role

Helen Mirren

Dame Helen Mirren has been talking about her role in the new biopic Hitchcock. Sir Anthony Hopkins stars as the great film director Sir Alfred Hitchcock, with Mirren, in the eyes of some, stealing the show as his wife Alma Hitchcock.

However, Mirren – who has plenty of experience in biopics having played Queen Elizabeth II previously – said that the role was tricky to come, not least because Alma largely stayed out of the limelight during Hitchcock’s life despite working with him as well as being married to him. “There’s no film” of her, Mirren said to The Washington Post. “Just one tiny bit on YouTube, of Hitchcock getting his AFI [American Film Institute] award, and there’s Alma sitting next to him. I watched that over and over again, but they only cut to Alma” — she snaps her fingers — “for a nanosecond. It was so frustrating.”

Mirren also said that she didn’t really look like Alma, commenting: “I do wish I looked more like Alma, because Alma was a birdlike person, and the visual imagery of this tiny little woman with this huge, big man — and she’s the only one who’s got influence over him — I just loved that idea.” However, for many these disparities mattered little, with both Mirren and Hopkins the brightest lights in a film that hasn’t quite received wholesale praise – something unlikely given the gravitas of the man they were trying to portray.

Hot Tickets! This Weekend’s US Movie Releases

Anthony Hopkins Alfred Hitchcock Helen Mirren Alma Reville Janet Leigh Scarlett Johansson Marion Cotillard Sarah Burns Ken Burns

It’s slim pickings this week, in terms of big budget movies, as the industry winds down a little over the festive period (though prepare yourselves for the usual onslaught of Christmassy slush hitting the big screen in the coming weeks).

However, the new release that everybody’s chatting about right now is Hitchcock. Starring Antony Hopkins (as the legendary director Alfred Hitchcock) and Helen Mirren (as his wife, Alma Reville), there has already been discussion of the possibility of Oscar nominations coming the way of this biopic, which focuses on the era when Hitchcock was filming Psycho – widely considered to be the pinnacle of his career. The star of Psycho, Janet Leigh, is played by the ever-popular Scarlett Johansson.

Reviews for the movie have been mixed; it seems as though most reviewers are praising the performances, but not the film as a whole, which lacks clarity. The movie is only getting a limited release this week, so don’t expect it to be riding too high with box office takings but do expect some of its cast to be riding high when it comes to awards season.

'Hitchcock' And His 'Psycho', The Film That Keeps On Giving

Alfred Hitchcock Helen Mirren Anthony Hopkins

Over 50 years on since Psycho was unleashed upon the world, and the influence of the film can still be seen in thrillers and horrors across the planet, such was the impact that legendary movie maker Alfred Hitchcock had upon the world of film. 'Hitchcock' is a film that pays homage to the man himself, and his most iconic movie.

Psycho defied a lot of expectations and traditions, it was entirely self funded and shot in black and white, despite colour film being in predominant use by 1960. Celebrating both the film and its maker, 'Hitchcock' follows the story of how Psycho was made and focuses itself on the relationship between Alfred and his wife, Alma.

"I saw [Psycho] in a movie theater in September 1960 on a dark Sunday afternoon in Manchester," Anthony Hopkins, who's starring as Hitchcock in the new movie, said to MTV. "The scene in the shower was the most frightening thing I've ever seen. And the whole audience was under the seat, myself included, because we didn't know what to expect... The shock was that he killed [the leading lady]. His leading actress. Great, brilliant idea that came from Alma." Clearly, Psycho would never have been a success without the influence of Hitchcock's wife. Helen Mirren, is playing Alma, and once met Hitchcock early in her career, but told the Huffington Post: "I didn't really like him, and I know he didn't like me very much." Luckily, she got over that to give a warm and authentic performance as his wife.

Some of Hollywood's most established stars - not least the cast themselves - turned out for the premiere of Hitchcockyesterday (November 20) at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California. It's not surprising that such a dazzling array of talent should take to the red carpet, given that the film effectively honours one of the greatest directors of all time in Alfred Hitchcock. Taking center stage were leading ladies Toni Collete, Jessica Biel and, of course,Dame Helen Mirren- the latter extremely enamoured by Biel's gorgeous dress, struggling to keep her hands off it.

Retro Glamour: Scarlett Johansson Looking Stunning As Janet Leigh In 'Hitchcock'

Scarlett Johansson Alfred Hitchcock Janet Leigh Anthony Hopkins Tippi Hedren Alma Reville Helen Mirren

Scarlett Johansson is the focus of a new string of photos to be released from Hitchcock – the new movie based on Alfred Hitchcock’s relationship with his wife. The movie centres on the period of time around the filming of Hitchcock’s classic thriller, Psycho, of which Janet Leigh (played by Scarlett) became the undoubted star.

In the photos (courtesy of Deadbolt), we see Scarlett in all her retro glory, wearing pastel coloured, 1950s cats-eye sun-shades and driving a vintage car. Elsewhere, she can be seen wearing a cream coloured cardigan and pencil skirt, being measured by a wardrobe assistant, whilst Hitchcock (played by Anthony Hopkins) looks on, framing her with his hands.

Another recent Hitchcock biopic, The Girl, examined Hitchock’s dubious and allegedly abusive relationship with another of his leading ladies, Tippi Hedren (The Birds) but Hitchcock is more interested with the relationship between the director and his wife, Alma Reville. Of course, Scarlett Johansson’s on-screen glamour plays a large part in the movie and even in the trailer, tension can be detected between the wife and the leading lady, as Reville (played by Helen Mirren) tells her husband “don’t wait until half way through the movie (to kill off the leading actress) – do it after half an hour.”

Scarlett Johansson Tattoo - Ribcage Ink Reads 'Lucky You' But What Does It Mean?

Scarlett Johansson Alfred Hitchcock Anthony Hopkins Helen Mirren Alma Reville Janet Leigh

What’s this? A new Scarlett Johansson tattoo?

It looks as though the Hitchcock actress has decided to add to her collection of body art with a rudimentary horseshoe, with the words ‘Lucky You’ inscribed above it. The new ink, which is located on her ribcage, was done by the French tattooist and graffiti artist Fuzi Uvtpk and The Daily Mail have pictured Scarlett and Fuzi together in his studio.

Apparently, Scarlett decided she wanted Fuzi to be the next tattoo artist to tattoo her, after she visited his exhibition in Paris. The new artwork joins her collection; she has two circles with the letter A on her ankle, a colourful sunrise scene in a circle, on her forearm and a bracelet on her wrist, which bears the words “I Love NY.” Scarlett is notoriously secretive when it comes to revealing the details of the meaning of her tattoos and we’re none the wiser when it comes to her new tattoo. Though frankly, if you’re close enough to Scarlett Johansson’s bare ribcage to read the tattoo, then lucky you, indeed!

Anthony Hopkins Presents... Hitchcock: Hitchcock Biopic Previews.

Helen Mirren Anthony Hopkins Sacha Gervasi Scarlett Johansson Jessica Biel James D'Arcy

The much anticipated Alfred Hitchcock biopic finally hit preview screens this week, and having already been tipped for Oscar success, the performances and subsequent reviews seem to echo that gossip.

Sacha Gervasi has taken the helm of the film, re-writing the script and directing an impressive cast, including Anthony Hopkins as the man himself, Helen Mirren as his wife, plus Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel, James DArcy and Danny Huston. The story begins in the wake of the wildly successful North by Northwest, as Hitchcock finds himself at a bit of a dead end for projects. The plot itself mostly revolves around his interesting relationship with his wife, Alma, Hitchcock's love of his blonde leads, and around the creation of his most famous work, Psycho. The Guardian has praised all the performances, particularly Mirren, "she is the film's - hell, both films' - secret heroine. Forget all those blondes - count on the redhead." The Hollywood Reporter has nothing but good words to say for Gervasi, who "displays abundant energy and visual tact at the helm" and desribes the film as a whole as "undeniably lively and provocative"- much like Hitchcock's own work.

Almost any artist, whether a writer, musician, film maker or sculptor, if they make something great it often means their life is interesting. Hitchcock continues to prove this rule, as arguably one of the greatest film makers of all time, his character, relationships and thus his life, make for fascinating viewing, all made possible by an utterly brilliant ensemble to bring life to his life.

Hitchcock Trailer Explores Psycho; The Movie Nobody Wanted Alfred To Make

Alfred Hitchcock Anthony Hopkins Helen Mirren Scarlett Johansson Janet Leigh

The trailer for 'Hitchcock' - director Sacha Gervasi's upcoming biopic of suspense director Alfred Hitchcock's relationship with his wife during the filming of his tour-de-force 'Psycho' - has hit the web. The actual movie is scheduled for limited release in November and stars Sir Anthony Hopkins as the acclaimed filmmaker and Helen Mirren as his wife Alma.

The trailer begins with one of Hitchcock's famous lines, "All of us harbour dark recesses of violence and horror. I'm just a man hiding in the corner, watching," before making it quite clear that neither Paramount, nor the director's advisers, were keen on his intention to make Psycho, an adaptation of Robert Bloch's 1959 suspense novel. After The Man Who Knew Too Much, Spellbound, Strangers on a Train and Rear Window, movie bosses were perhaps understandably cautious for Hitchcock to adapt the novel that included a passage in which the protagonist is beheaded in the shower. In the new trailer, Hopkins' Hitchcock declares, "This book Psycho is fiendishly entertaining" though one movie executive hits back "No one respects the name Hitchcock more than Paramount, but even a talented man sometimes bats the wrong horse!"

Of course, the movie went ahead as planned and was instantly considered the director's most seminal work. Watch out for Scarlett Johansson as actress Janet Leigh in the latest clip!

Dame Helen Mirren Receives European Film Award

Helen Mirren Alfred Hitchcock

Dame Helen Mirren is in quite possibly what some people could call the Regal phase of her career - apt given that she's played Queen Elizabeth II in the past. By this we mean that she's an actress now consistently putting on some of the best performances of her career and being recognised for them by critics and the public at large. Having won an Academy Best Actress Award in 2007, Mirren was once again nominated in 2010 and is expected another nod in 2013 for playing Sir Alfred Hitchcock's wife in the biopic Hitchcock.

Before that, though, it's been announced that the British actress will be getting a special award for her achievements in world cinema by the European Film Academy. As a result, Mirren will be a guest at the European Film Awards on December 1st in Malta where she will receive award. The BBC reports that she reacted to the news by saying "It was discovering the immense diversity of European film-making that gave me an enduring love and respect for the artform." Continuing she added "This award is... a meaningful honour. I would be proud to be counted as an actor in the European tradition."

Mirren will be revisiting her role as The Queen on the stage next year, in Peter Morgan's play The Audience.

The Queen Is Losing Her Posh Accent, Says Helen Mirren

Helen Mirren

Dame Helen Mirren is perhaps known best for her role of our monarch Queen Elizabeth II and as such she has a good idea of how she acts and speaks, something that the actress says has changed over the years.

According to Mirren, who will be returning to her role as the monarch for a new stage show titled The Accused, the 60 year serving sovereign has developed a more estuary accent and sounds a little more like her less-regal subjects. Dame Helen has admitted that, in studying for the role, she noticed that the Queen has maintained a consistent dress sense, hairstyle and professional attitude of the years, but one slight change in that time has occurred, in the accent that the Queen has used. 'Her voice has changed, and I can use that... she had a terribly posh voice when she was young,' said the actress to The Daily Mail. 'But now even the Queen, while she isn't quite dropping the ends of her lines - though her grandsons do - there's a tiny bit of estuary creeping in there.'

For the new stage show, Dame Helen, is returning to the role that won her an Oscar in 2007, for the 2006 film The Queen. Her new role will see her play Queen Elizabeth in different parts in her reign, starting at the age of 25 and leading up to the present day. The play, written by acclaimed playwright Peter Morgan, will look at the Queen's weekly meetings with various prime ministers throughout her reign, from Winston Churchill to David Cameron.

Helen Mirren Dusting Off Her Crown To Play ‘The Queen’ Once More

Helen Mirren Stephen Daldry Peter Morgan Tony Blair Martin Sheen

Helen Mirren is set to reprise her career-defining role as ‘The Queen’ for a new stage-play directed by Stephen Daldry. The British star – who scooped an Oscar for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in Stephen Frear’s 2006 movie – will team up with Peter Morgan for ‘The Audience’, a production exploring six decades of the monarch’s weekly meetings with British prime ministers.

Her portrayal of The Queen in a meeting with Tony Blair – played by Martin Sheen – was considered one of the more memorable scenes of the award-winning movie and Daldry is set to build on that in the stage-play. Playing the monarch from her twenties to her eighties will be no mean feat, though Mirren holds the necessary credentials to take on such a role. According to the Guardian, she said, “Her voice has changed, and I can use that –she had a terribly posh voice when she was young…But now even the Queen, while she isn't quite dropping the ends of her lines –though her grandsons do! – there's a tiny bit of estuary creeping in there. I can use all that to signify the age range, and we'll come up with other things.” The drama will be staged at the Gielgud Theatre in London from March 2013.

‘The Audience’ is certainly in good hands; playwright Peter Morgan’s last play ‘Frost/Nixon’ gained universal critical acclaim and featured a standout performance from Michael Sheen.

Dame Helen Mirren To Reprise Her Role As The Queen In New Play

Helen Mirren Diana Princess Of Wales Peter Morgan Stephen Daldry

Dame Helen Mirren is to reprise the role that won her a much-coveted Oscar award by playing Elizabeth II in a new play by Peter Morgan called The Audience. Morgan wrote the script for The Queen that, in 2006, catapulted Mirren to that rarest of acting highs as she scooped the Acadamy's best actress award as she portrayed the head of the UK monarchy.

Morgan's credits on the stage also include the excellently received Frost/Nixon which went on to be made into a feature length film, whilst on the big screen his screenplay credits include The Last King Of Scotland and The Damned United. Following on from The Queen which took place during the days immediately after Princess Diana's death, this new play will convey a series of conversations that the monarch has had with the 12 Prime Ministers to have passed through 10 Downing Street during Elizabeth's time on the throne.

"From Churchill to Cameron, each Prime Minister has used these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional - sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive," reads a press release re-published by the BBC. The play will be directed by Billy Elliott director Stephen Daldry. The play is due to open in London in February of next year and will run until June.

British Actress Helen Mirren Set For A Return To The Throne

Helen Mirren Peter Morgan

Helen Mirren will be returning to her role as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, it has emerged, when the veteran actress will grace the stage at the Gielgud Theatre in London’s West End for a new play called The Audience.

According to BBC News, Dame Helen, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of the current monarch in 2007, will see herself reunited with Peter Morgan, the man responsible for writing The Queen and now The Audience. Morgan’s latest royal effort depicts the weekly meetings held between Queen Elizabeth and some of the 12 Prime Ministers who have served during her 60-year reign. Morgan, like Mirren, is no stranger to the stage, holding the writing credits to such stage hits as Frost/Nixon and Billy Elliot, with The Audience expected to continue his reputation for good form. The play will begin its run on 15 February 2013 and will play until June 15th.

Dame Helen recently made the news for some less regal reasons of late, after rumours sparked that the 67-year-old actress has had cosmetic surgery. She was spotted wearing a headscarf whilst out shopping but so far she has made no comment on the situation. During an interview with IN Style magazine in 2011, Mirren spoke of her own displeasure at the prospect of going under the knife, branding it as “horrific.”

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Julie Taymor's take on the Bard sees Mirren as Prospera, a female version of Prospero, the exiled duke of the original play.

Brand is to play Trinculo, a jester, while Jeremy Irons, Djimon Hounsou and Ben Whishaw have also been confirmed for the Icon film.

In Shakespeare's original text, Prospero and his daughter Miranda (Felicity Jones) are exiled to a distant island inhabited only by deformed slave Caliban (Hounsou) and Ariel, a spirit (Whishaw).

Having learnt to control the island with magic, Prospero seizes the chance to wreak revenge on her usurpers by raising a storm which leaves them shipwrecked, sparking a romance between Miranda and the son of Prospero's greatest rival Alonso, the King of Naples (Irons).

Alfred Molina is also on board, playing the drunken butler Stephano while Oscar-winner Geoffrey Rush is in negotiations to play Gonzalo, a royal adviser and former alley of Prospero's.

Director Taymor's only significant change to the text, as of yet, seems to be the feminising of Prospero's character.

Likely to begin shooting in November, The Tempest will be the Oscar-nominated helmer's first film since 2007's Beatles musical Across the Universe.
