The moviemaker, born Herbert Weisz in Austria, passed away on 5 August (15). His cause of death was not released as WENN went to press.

Wise relocated to England aged 14, and become a British citizen in 1947. He began his career directing plays for the Shrewsbury Repertory Company in 1950 and led two other theatre groups before moving into television.

Wise is best known for directing the 1976 miniseries I, Claudius, starring Sir Derek Jacobi, and he received an Emmy nomination for his work. He also helmed TV movies Breaking the Code, about codebreaker Alan Turing, an adaptation of Susan Hill's The Woman in Black novel, and The Gathering Storm, starring Richard Burton.

Wise received a second Emmy nomination for 1981 TV film Skokie and also directed various episodes for TV series including Z Cars, Tales of the Unexpected, Ruth Rendell Mysteries and Inspector Morse, and he also won a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award in 1979.

He was first married to actress Moira Redmond for seven years from 1963. He later married actress Fiona Walker in 1988 and they had two children.
