The former Lizzy Maguire star and former hockey star Comrie have not given any other reason as to why their marriage has failed, but the pair will remain in close contact despite their split for the benefit of 1-year-old son Luca. According to Hilary's mother, Susan Duff, speaking to TMZ, the pair have already decide to keep joint custody of Luca, but will look to continue their life with other people. Susan told TMZ that she is sad to see the two separate, but in her view "They're better friends than a married couple."

The 26-year-old actress married 33-year-old Comrie in a private ceremony in Santa Barbara back in August, 2010, and seemed to be going from strength to strength in their relationship with each passing year. However, in the month often referred to as 'Divorce Month,' owing to the pressures of the holiday season resulting in a number of relationships reaching breaking point, this is the latest big name relationship to succumb to the January curse.

The pair were last spotted together on New Years Eve, with Hilary posting a picture of the two before they hit the town for celebrations on her Instagram account, with the snap offering no indication of their imminent split.
