The retired New York Rangers ice hockey player, who used to date actress Elisha Cuthbert, was taken into custody in Southampton Village, New York on 30 September (15), and booked for criminal mischief, relating to an incident on 29 September (15), when he reportedly contacted local authorities to complain about cars speeding in the area. He stands accused of hurling objects at the passing vehicles.

Upon his arrest, he was also slapped with two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance for medications oxycodone and roxicodone, according to 27east.com.

He has since been released on $500 (£313) bail and his lawyer, Edward Burke, Jr., is confident they will beat the charges, adding that Avery "has prescriptions" for the drugs.

The Canadian has also tried to prove his innocence online by posting what appears to be his doctor's prescription on Twitter.com on Tuesday (06Oct15).

He captioned the shot, "Pretty disgusting I even have to do this but unfortunately it's the same old story. Have fun with this."

The news of Avery's arrest emerges as he prepares to tie the knot with longtime Estee Lauder model Rhoda on Saturday (10Oct15) at the Parrish Art Museum in the Hamptons, New York. The couple became engaged in 2013

The 35-year-old athlete previously dated 24 star Cuthbert from 2005 to 2007.
