How long can The Wolverine top the pile?
A predictable box office weekend saw comic book superhero Wolverine – portrayed once again by Hugh Jackman – take the crown. The James Mangold-directed film capitalized on a month of geek, with Comic Con taking place, to rake in another $86m (£55m) from an already impressive opening.
He fought his way to the top - Wolverine
But while the box office triumph was ultimately predictable, it wasn’t always a dead cert. The Wolverine suffered from some naysayers early on, causing a dip in the reviews, but it’s settled down to be an above average film by all accounts, or all accounts amalgamated into a score on Rotten Tomatoes, we should say. Chris Aronson, Fox's head of domestic distribution said "it played equally well from Maine to Maui".
Another $22.1m (£14.3m) saw the horror film The Conjuring fall down to second. The low budget scream-fest only cost $20m to make, so many more weekends like that and you’ll be seeing a Conjuring 2 announcement from Warner Bros. any time soon. Despicable Me 2 – probably the opposite to a horror film – is clawing in there, holding onto a top three spot with a further $16m. This means it’s made more than $600m in its four weeks of release. Despicable Three?
Gru has some issues, but they're not financial - Despicable Me 2
Turbo didn’t exactly live up to its name, but still remains up there with $13m - $55m overall after a second week. Grown Ups 2 – now enjoying a third week – grabbed $11m to take its total over the $100m mark.
So a strong weekend for Wolverine, which you can expect to run on for another weekend at least, seeing as August 2nd only sees 2 Guns, Europa Report an The Spectacular Now released, and the latter two are on a limited run. Boxofficemojo had the figures.
