Ice Cube Comments On Bill Maher 'N-Word' Controversy

Bill Maher Ice Cube

Veteran rapper Ice Cube has hit out at talk show host Bill Maher after his casual use of the n-word during an interview last week, saying “you gotta know when to shut up”.

However, the former N.W.A. star also questioned the nature of the outrage that has engulfed the conversation since has not been particularly constructive. He’s due to appear on Maher’s chat show ‘Real Time’ this Friday, and it seems likely that he’ll be taking the host to task over his throwaway, unscripted remark.

On last Friday’s episode (June 2nd) of HBO’s real time, Maher was speaking to Republican senator Ben Sasse when the politician invited him to “work in the fields” with him in his state of Nebraska.

Ice Cube Worked To Create An Epic Fist Fight

Ice Cube

Ice Cube thought the idea was perfectly suited to the two of them, a rare high school comedy that focussed on teachers instead of students. Cube says he found inspiration for his role from his own school days. "Yeah, my character is an exaggerated version of a teacher I had named Mr Toussaint," he says. "He was a woodshop teacher and, man, he was pretty mean! He had this afro that he would comb to the front, and he would just yolk people up. He was not playing."

Charlie Day and Ice Cube in Fist Fight

Since the whole movie builds up to the big fight, Cube says the cast and crew had to keep their focus. "It was a lot of pressure to make sure that the fight was epic and that we weren't just doing this funny movie that has a little blip of a fight," he says. "Richie [Keen, the director] wanted to shoot the longest fight ever. We had to choreograph that, and we had a great team who put it together. It took us like three days to even learn the fight and then another eight days to shoot it."

Fist Fight Trailer

It's safe to say that most kids experience some kind of big fight in the playground after school during their high school years, whether they're involved or just bystanders... but usually the people throwing punches aren't the teachers. When Strickland threatens to beat up Campbell after school following a disagreement, Campbell doesn't take it seriously until it becomes clear that the whole school knows what's going down. Problem is, Campbell doesn't know the first thing about fighting and Strickland is totally ruthless. Campbell has few options, but whatever he chooses to do he's probably dead anyway.

Wild Life Festival 2016 - Live Review

After winning the Best New Festival Award in 2015, Wild Life was back at Brighton City Airport to now showcase and cement its date in the festival calendar as a major player. To do this, it would need to go one better, bring in something neoteric and exhilarating, whilst also landing some grand-musical heavyweights. They arrived in the form of grime's latest stars Stormzy and Skepta, American vets Ice Cube and Busta Rhymes, and pop artists Bastille.

Wild Life Festival 2016 - Live Review

It was the former N.W.A lyricist who had the crowd trembling at his figure tips though. Supported by no more than his son (not O'Shea Jackson who plays his father in Straight Outta Compton), Ice Cube was the penultimate act on Sunday's main stage and stole the show. The set of the weekend, despite co-curators Disclosure and Rudimental headlining the festival for successive years.

With both Stormzy and Skepta having tracks appear ubiquitously over all radio stations, this was their moment to shine, their moment under the spotlight. They appeared on the main stage Saturday and Sunday respectively and both seemed to revere their audience from the first moment, with Stormzy indicating it was the biggest and best crowd he had every performed at - it probably was for Skepta too.

Album Of The Day: 'Straight Outta Compton' By N.W.A.

Ice Cube Dr Dre

In the wake of the first reunion of the surviving members of N.W.A. in more than 25 years at Coachella, it's time to reflect on an album that prominently changed the face of rap forever. You probably saw the 2015 biopic of the same name, but when was the last time you listened to the record?

NWANWA are rap pioneers

N.W.A. were a group of pioneering Compton rappers including Dr Dre and Ice Cube that may have invoked controversy with the explicit content of their lyrics, but nonetheless became the inspiration for almost every single rapper to come after them despite only ever releasing two albums.

Ice Cube said he had some tricks up his sleeve for Coachella 2016, but no-one was expecting all this. The rapper managed to reunite with all surviving NWA members, including Dr Dre, on stage at the festival in Indio, California as well as introduce some very special additional guests.

Say what you like about rappers, but there's a tight bond between stars in the hip hop world - be it a bond of beef or a bond of brotherhood, and Ice Cube was certainly displaying the latter at Coachella's second weekend.

Gene Simmons Ice Cube Dr Dre Mc Ren

Kiss member Gene Simmons has responded to N.W.A., after he was called out by the rap group during their induction speech at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The beef between the bassist and the Compton group all started last month when Simmons told Rolling Stone magazine he was ‘looking forward to the death of rap.’

"I am looking forward to the death of rap,” Simmons said. “I’m looking forward to music coming back to lyrics and melody, instead of just talking. A song, as far as I'm concerned, is by definition lyric and melody … or just melody.”

N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton used a unique marketing tactic to promote the movie on Facebook, creating different trailers for different races. Speaking at South by Southwest, Universal’s EVP of digital marketing, Doug Neil, and Facebook’s entertainment head, Jim Underwood, described the ‘customised racial marketing’ they used to promote the biopic, which became a box office hit last year.

For Kevin Hart, Ride Along 2 Was About Having Fun

Kevin Hart Ice Cube

When they made the first Ride Along two years ago, Kevin Hart and Ice Cube found an unusual bond as collaborators. "Literally there wasn't a day that we stepped on set with any bad energy," Hart says. "It was a positive vibe: I'm making his day better, he's making my day better. You're really looking at a partnership, two guys who leave all egos at the door and say, 'I got you.' It's a give and take relationship and I think it shows in the movie."

So after the first film became a hit, they had the chance to get together again. "Me and Cube picked up where we left off," Hart says of making Ride Along 2. "With the first film, we made what we set out to do, which was a quality buddy action cop comedy with a hint of romance. So we thought since we had such a great template why not build on it? Why not come back and gain more success off of what we did the first time? And also there's such a good group of people involved - from the studio to the director, producers and actors."

22 Jump Street - Clip

After a pretty traumatic time returning to high school to uncover the source of a popular new drug, young cops Schmidt and Jenko are being forced to go undercover yet again. This time their special division has been moved from 21 to 22 Jump Street and they are re-experiencing college life. Sound fun? Well, not when you haven't got a clue what is going through kids' minds these days and with a new narcotic going around called Whyphy (that sounds a lot like WiFi), they've got an exceptionally tricky situation on their hands. Spring Break might mean time off for the students, but for Schmidt and Jenko it's the perfect opportunity to find the suppliers. First though, they need a little help from an old perp, who's currently serving time in jail after their previous drug bust.

'Ride Along' Has No Ambition, So Just Laugh And Watch Things Blowing Up

Ice Cube Kevin Hart

There's very little ambition apparent on-screen in the buddy action-comedy Ride Along, with its lazy direction and slack script. But the filmmakers clearly knew they had lightning in a bottle in co-star Kevin Hart, so they let him run free with his fast-paced comical banter. This merely required Ice Cube to look short-tempered. And in America the film topped the box office for three weeks in January and February.

Ben is a high-school security who only wants one thing in his life; to marry his beautiful girlfriend Angela. However, that proves to be less than easy when Angela's tough and intimidating cop brother James has less respect for him than the criminals he pursues. When Ben gets accepted into the police academy, he thinks he has James' blessing in the bag, but James has other ideas; he'll let Ben marry his sister if he proves he's worthy of her by joining him on his next shift in the world of car chases, guns and ruthless fights. Initially confident he'll do well in proving himself, Ben finds it a shock to his system as he has never even held a gun before let alone fired one.

'Ride Along' is a brilliant action comedy  that's deep down all about love, family and acceptance. Directed by Tim Story ('Fantastic Four', 'Think Like a Man'), the movie has been written by a large collaboration of Greg Coolidge ('Employee of the Month'), Steve Faber and Bob Fisher ('Wedding Crashers', 'We're the Millers'), Phil Hay  and Matt Manfredi ('The Tuxedo', 'Clash of the Titans') and Jason Mantzoukas ('Off Duty'). It is set for release in the US on January 17th 2014.

Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap Trailer

Hip hop has always been more of a culture than just a genre of music. It represents a huge portion of the marginalised world of America and how they managed to create something from nothing; how their lifestyle and previously buried literary talents created a culture that has inspired millions. The frontman of rap/ metal band Body Count Ice-T takes his audience on the road to visit the founding fathers, the major superstars and the rising stars of the rap genre including Afrika Bambaataa, Eminem, Nas, Mos Def, Kanye West, Chuck D, Krs-One, Snoop Dogg, Run-DMC, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube and discover the skill and feeling behind what has made them international music heroes. One of the frequent interviewees is Grandmaster Caz who we are taken to visit on several occasions as he writes a new set of rhymes called 'The Art Of Rap'.

Directed by Ice-T with help from Andy Baybutt, 'Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap' is a feature length music documentary delving into what goes into making the seminal hip hop records that have dominated music since the late '70s. It came about when producer Paul Toogood asked Ice-T the simplest of question which the star had never before been asked: How did he write seminal tracks such as '6 In The Mornin' and 'Colors'?

Featuring: Common, Ice Cube, Chuck D, Mos Def, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Nas, Kanye West, Darryl McDaniels, KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane

21 Jump Street Review

Excellent
An especially sharp script makes this riotous adaptation of the serious-minded 1980s TV series thoroughly entertaining. And it manages to achieve a balance between the action and spoofery due to sure-handed direction and a cast that really dives into the mayhem.

Rivals in high school, popular pretty boy Jenko (Tatum) and smart-shy nerd Schmidt (Hill) become unlikely friends to get through police academy. But being cops isn't quite as exciting as they thought it would be until they're assigned to the Jump Street squad run by Captain Dickson (Cube). Rampart Review

Good
Harrelson reunites with The Messenger writer-director Moverman for this grim drama about police corruption in late-1990s Los Angeles. But while it's sharply well-made, the film doesn't really offer anything new to the bad-cop genre.

Dave (Harrelson) is struggling to hold his fractured family together while covering up his dodgy activities as a cop in L.A.'s rough Rampart district. He lives with his two ex-wives (Heche and Nixon) and two daughters (Larson and Boyarsky), while developing a tentative relationship with a lawyer (Wright).

But his vigilante-style approach to his job leaves him with few friends, while his addiction to prescription drugs is sending him into a downward spiral. And now he's being harassed by the D.A. (Weaver) and her investigator (Ice Cube).

Next Friday Review

Weak
I usually don't like sequels. The mind-numbing rehash of characters; the bad puns that related to subject matter from the original film; the vain attempt at trying to create something "new and fresh" that turns into an overstuffed turkey and usually follows the same blueprint. I mean, who the hell gave the OK for such films as The Crow 2 and Universal Solider: The Return. Only a few films, which I can probably count on my right hand, have equaled or surpassed the original -- The Empire Strikes Back, Godfather II. When I walked into Next Friday, I must admit I carried this feeling in with me. When I walked out, I wasn't surprised by my reaction to the film.

Let me make one thing clear before I proceed. I loved the original Friday. The inner city setting gave such a rich backdrop to a wonderful ensemble of interesting and colorful characters. The interactions of these characters let the film breathe life back into the territory previously covered by the Hughes Brothers and John Singleton, and then ridiculed by the Wayans Clan. The film also introduced the directing debut of F. Gary Gray and the acting debut of Chris Tucker. Ice Cube, one of the original writers and producers of Friday, tries to recapture the innocence and originality of the previous film but ends up failing by not producing the same even-flow of character interaction and storyline so prevalent in the original.

XXX: State Of The Union Review

Terrible
If it weren't for IceCube's charismatic bad attitude, "XXX:State of the Union" would be downright unwatchable.

A paper-doll sequel with paper-thin performances and avideo-game plot -- a ridiculously implausible presidential coup plannedby an arch-conservative Secretary of Defense (teeth-gritting Willem Dafoe)-- this is nothing but a sorry attempt to ride the explosion-shredded coattailsof 2002's "XXX"without bringing back its star. Vin Diesel apparently got a big head fromhaving the first picture custom-tailored for him, and was booted afterasking for $25 million to reprise his role as an extreme-sports-jock spy.

So instead, Cube plays a Navy SEAL imprisoned for insubordinationwho is busted out by loose-cannon National Security Agency honcho SamuelL. Jackson (tough-guying his way to an easy paycheck) and deputized asthe new Agent Triple-X after Jackson's underground headquarters is raidedby gadget-laden baddies in black body armor. Who these thugs are and whatthey were doing there is barely explained, and no reason is offered forwhy, with all its agents, intelligence and firepower, the NSA must relyon a lone prison escapee to investigate and thwart a takeover of the U.S.government.

But director Lee Tamahori (who helped dumb down the lastJames Bond movie) doesn't really care as long as the next 5,000-round shoot-out,five-story fireball or $500,000 sports-car chase is just around the corner. This is the kind of brain-dead action movie in which window-rattling, wind-generatinghelicopters inexplicably sneak up on people, characters "lie low"by squealing around street corners in Washington D.C. while driving tricked-out,iridescent pimp-mobiles, and federal agents have to be certifiable moronsin order for the plot to advance.

Friday After Next Review

Weak

After writing and starring in the funny homeboys-and-hemp comedies "Friday" and "Next Friday," rapper-actor Ice Cube isn't quite out of ripe screwball ideas, but "Friday After Next" spreads them pretty thin. In fact, the "Pink Panther"-styled cartoon opening credits are the biggest laugh in the movie.

Story proper begins with slapstick cousins Craig (Cube) and Day-Day (Mike Epps) back in Compton after spending the last film in the suburbs. Desperate for rent money after a "ghetto Santa" breaks into their apartment at Christmas time, swiping presents and cash, the guys take seasonal security jobs at a dilapidated strip mall where their grumpy, squabbling dads (John Witherspoon and Don "D.C." Curry) have a barbecue joint.

Armed with nothing but a second-hand uniform and a whistle, thickwit Day-Day thinks he's suddenly a supercop, rousting church-lady carolers for loitering, but running away from gangbangers when he rubs them the wrong way. Meanwhile Craig has his eye on a drop-dead gorgeous salesgirl (K.D. Aubert) at the strip's new clothing outlet, Pimps & Hos. (Other stores include Holy Moly Donuts, check cashing, liquor and 94-cent stores, and Toyz in the Hood.)

All About The Benjamins Review

OK

Ice Cube and Mike Epps, co-stars of the stoner satire "Next Friday," trade their ganja for gunplay in "All About the Benjamins." Cube is a rebellious, hotshot Miami bounty hunter and Epps is his frequent petty-criminal quarry, but they become partners looking to score some fast cash when one of their regular foot chases lands them both in the middle of a diamond heist.

Actually, Epps isn't interested in the diamonds. He dropped his wallet while hiding in the back of the jewel thieves' van and he just wants it back because the wallet contains his girlfriend's winning $60 million lottery ticket.

Cube doesn't buy that story, but he plays along because he wants to start his own private detective agency and he figures he could get some great publicity out of collaring a couple killers who stole $20 million in stones.
