Frozen star Idina Menzel has crushed the hopes of young fans after she insisted that she “spoke out of turn” when she stated that a sequel was “in the works”.

The 43 year old star caused a great deal of excitement at the end of last year when she let slip in an interview that Disney bosses were working on a follow-up to the kids’ blockbuster, which currently stands as the highest grossing animated film of all time with global box office takings of $1.07 billion.

However, in a new interview with British newspaper The Times, Menzel has backtracked on her previous remarks. She said “apparently I spoke out of turn. I just assumed because it was so successful there'd be a sequel.”

Menzel, a theatrical star by trade and who voiced the part of Elsa in the movie, was then asked about the possibility of a stage show. She replied “I think they're working on [it] but the Disney people keep things close to their chests."

Elsewhere in the interview, Menzel revealed that her son apparently doesn’t like Frozen. When asked whether she had grown tired of her character’s signature song ‘Let It Go’, she said “I'm not, because I have a five-year-old son who doesn't want to watch the movie and play the song. So when I sing it's a celebration for me, it's something that changed my life.”

Frozen shows absolutely no signs of slowing down as a cultural phenomenon. It won two Academy Awards last year following its release at the back end of 2013, and for almost all of 2014 its soundtrack was the highest selling album of the year until Taylor Swift’s 1989 overhauled it during the final week of December. It sold over 3.5 million copies, though, absolutely steamrollering all other competition.
